I used to have the vacuum in the closet, then we moved and they're in the garage now. I put the vacuum as far away as I could with the hose still reaching

how did you make the vacuum go through both pistons at once? I tried a boxer 4 and it was a pain trying to get the vacuum to hit all four cylinders

The intake has a mount on the top and bottom, and a looked very carefully to make sure there were as little leaks as possible.
