The line used to be the heart of the Furka Oberalp railway (FO), a narrow gauge rack railway connecting the SBB station of Brig in the canton of Wallis with the RhB network in Disentis/Mustér (together hosting the glacier express), with a branch line connecting to Göschenen of the Gotthard railway.
Construction of the line commenced in 1911. As a result of World War I, funds and workers were no longer available, putting a stop to progress. In 1926, the remainder of the line was finally finished.
Due to large amounts of snow and the danger of avalanches, the line had to be closed during winter months. This included removing catenary wires and other pieces of infrastructure prone to damage, closing the tunnels and even folding a specially designed bridge down into the valley. The viaduct which once stood in its place was destroyed by an avalanche in 1916 before a train even got to drive on it.
The high costs involved with this procedure, as well as the inconvenience of the line being divided for 5 to 6 months of the year led to the development of the Furka base tunnel. This was completed in 1982, upon which the mountain pass was decommissioned and planned to be removed.
Thankfully, railway fans formed an association, aiming to preserve the line, which they were successful in doing. Finally by 2010, the line had been restored to the extent that trains could once again travel all the way from Realp to Oberwald.
Special thanks the the DFB for allowing us to film and share this special experience of a former electric line with diesel and steam traction. In Gletsch we cross 2 steam trains. Apparently departures are only possible from track 1, which meant shunting to track 1 after the first steam train had left and then waiting for the second on to arrive.

What a fascinating and scenic ride! What amazing engineers the Swiss are! And this short itinerary traverses a significant node in European geography. Before the Furka top tunnel, all the little rivers we see ultimately flow to the Mediterranean near Marseille through the Rhône (which appears itself in the video as just a small brook, only a couple of kilometres from its source in a glacier just beside Gletsch). After the tunnel, all waters flow to the Rhine and to the North Sea near Rotterdam. In theory, both sides of the tunnel speak Swiss German, but the Walser dialect before the tunnel is so distinct that some linguists consider it a separate language, hardly understandable by other Swiss people. And just behind the mountains to the right is the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. This is a fascinating meeting point of different cultures and geographies!

Ja. Und was das erst für ein Eindruck gewesen sein vor 100 Jahren beim noch riesigen Rhonegletscher. Die damals ersten Touristen waren sprachlos, wenn man die alten Aufzeichnungen liest. Neben dem Morteratsch oder Grindelwald war hier einer der wenigen Orte ganz nah an einen Eisstrom heran zu kommen.

Die Strecke Oberwald-Gletsch bin ich mit dem Dieselzug schon mal mitgefahren. Von Gletsch bis Realp hab ich die Gegend bisher nur aus der Straßenperspektive gekannt (Motorrad). Dieses Video hat mir eine wunderschöne neue Perspektive ins Urserental beschert. Vielen Dank dafür! :)
Vielen Dank! Klar ist es speziell mit einer Dampflok zu filmen aber ich finde es nicht so anreizend. Die Sicht ist dieselbe und die Geräusche hört man auch vom Zug aus.
Das stimmt. Die Sicht auf die Landschaft wäre vom Führer- & Heizerstnd aus vermutlich stark eingeschränkt im Vergleich zur Diesellok. Der Dieselsound kommt auf der Aufnahme super rüber, ich habe auch akustisch jede Minute geniessen können. Alles richtig gemacht! :)

I rode the Glacier Express from Zermatt ot St.Moritz in 1967. This was the normal route then.

Sehr schön, den Furkapass mal aus der Westrichtung gefilmt zu sehen. Werden die Züge planmässig außer mit Dampf- auch mit Dieselloks gefahren, oder war das eine Ausnahmesituation? Nebenbei: die 2 Motoren - ich vermute MTU - haben welche Leistung ? Ist die Kraftübertragung dieselelektrisch oder dieselhydraulisch ? Für die Beantwortung meiner tausend Fragen : besten Dank im Voraus !!!
Planmässig fahren Züge mit Dampf, der Paolo kann vielleicht erläutern wieso sie hier mit Diesel gefahren sind. Die Kraftübertragung ist elektrisch. Alles andere finden Sie vielleicht auf Wikipedia.
Ein Zugpaar (Wanderexpress) wird mit der Diesellok gefahren. Die Lok wird auch nach Bedarf für den Löschzug eingesetzt.

First question: yeah. Second one: good question. I guess it comes with trucks to Andermatt and then to Realp.

Ja der Scheiteltunnel ist natürlich belüftet. Je nach Witterung zieht der Rauch nach Ost oder nach Westen. Die Temperatur ist ganzjährig ca 10°C ausser direkt an den Portalbereichen. Diesel wird per LKW nach Real, Oberwald und Gletsch geliefert.
The portal that you designate as the entry to the base tunnel, actually is not it. This is just a short tunnel. The main portal is more to the east on the other side of the valley. You can see it at around the 5 min mark on the bottom right of the image …

Da der Zug grad mal bei der Zwischenstation 36:22 anhält, erlaube ich mir folgende Frage an den Lockführer zu stellen:
Was hat die Lock für eine Motoreinheit? Gehe ich recht in der Annahme -- so wie ich es vom Motorenklang raus hören kann -- handelt es sich ja um einen Dieselmotor.
Betreibt der Dieselmotor einen Strom-Generator, der wiederum seinen Strom an einen Elektromotor weiter leitet, der dann seine Kraft auf die Lock überträgt?
Das ist richtig, es sind 2 MTU V12 Dieselmotoren auf der Lok verbaut.

They prevent fires in dry conditions. Steam engines tend to emit sparks and embers during operation.

How does the engine disengage and re-engage the rack at each new section?
There is special cog section that accelerates the cogwheels and syncronises it.

That's a special section of the cog rail? I noticed the first meter or so of each section looked different than the rest, but couldn't see just how.
@@constructionwatcher5381 yeah that this special section. Furthermore until they it hadn't been found a newer system so the trains still have to slow down at 10kp/h when they entere it.
