Credit in and of itself is not evil. If you work for a company that accepts credit cards or you are there to approve loans, you have to realize that customers have to make their own decisions and you cant babysit everyone. I dont believe people should over indulge in fast food, but if I'm working at a restaraunt or a manager of a Pizza Hut, I cant possibly hold myself responsible when some obese, unhealthy individuals frequent my establishment.

This was one of the main reasons I quit working at a credit union. You have to hit a credit card quota. What that looks like “behind the scenes” is a pop up on the tellers screen when you access someone’s account. The pop up tells you they qualify for a credit card based on their credit score. In my experience those people are always young and didn’t have experience managing money, meaning mom & dad still put money in their account & or made their car payment. I I knew what signing them up for that credit card was going to mean and I just couldn’t push credit cards on someone who didn’t NEED one.

Lisa de Kramer It’s very difficult for students to not get student loans nowadays. An instate school is minimum 20k a year. 20x4 is 80k a year. Plus housing bills etc. Grants and scholarships may help a bit but what about the other 50k. Should they work for 5-10 years to save up beforehand? The system is very corrupt, school is overpriced and not worth it, you can literally learn just by buying a book.

If you have money in your checking account, your debit card can only access the amount you have.
A credit card allows you to spend more than you have.
That is the point; to get you to go into debt so the bank can charge interest on the debt.
      Think about that.
Why do banks issue credit cards?
      To be nice?
The fact that you use it and pay it off each month and avoid interest and get perks is good for you.
      I get it.
But the vast majority of people using credit cards do not, or can not, pay them off as you do.
Otherwise, banks would not issue credit cards because they would be unprofitable.
As for building credit; there is no need if you pay for everything in cash.
I have never spent more than I earned.

There is nothing innately wrong with credit. It can be a very useful tool. The problem is that most people who get it have no idea how to use it and see it as free money. Take credit cards for example. If you have a good budget and stick to it, you can get a few percent back. It may not be a lot, but a few hundred dollars at the end of the year is pretty good for no extra effort. If you treat your credit line as free money and end up with interest charges or spend more than you otherwise would have done, that is when credit is bad. The problem isn't the credit itself, it is that people lack the knowledge and discipline to use it correctly.

I mean, how would she live her values? I worked for a bank from 2016-2018. I was instructed to look for opportunities to get people to open up credit cards. Sold credit cards to 18 year olds telling them it would help them buy a car, because they need to build their credit to do that. Granted, I fully believed at that time that that was helpful to them and the right thing to do. As a manager, you would just switch to being the one telling the bankers to do that same thing. Only getting out of retail banking, to wealth management or mortgage lending would let her get away from that.
