Don’t know where they ended up so now I’m back to collecting vintage hardbound with those cute covers and I’m going to reread. Funny store, during that trip in 1972, went to Sidmouth in Devon, looked up Delderfield n the phone book and called to say hi. He was away but spoke with his wife Mae, lovely lady. That’s how simple things were in England in 1972!
Love Delderfield. I’ll always remember as a young library page aged about 15, I was working in a library and I put a Horseman riding by on the shelves and just was dazzled by the cover and the title and I wanted to go to England et cetera, et cetera. I’ve never forgotten that magic. I’m now married to an Englishman and living over here for quite a few years and still love Delderfield!💕
I remember Mark from Book Time With Elvis really loving a Delderfield novel. I had a little fold on my copy of Katie's book too but not as bad. I read a book you would love this week! Mapp and Lucia by E. F. Benson.
Unfortunately I had a similar box issue w/ Blackwells but NOT THAT BAD!! WOW! I just taped my cover. I would DEFINITELY contact them! When it happened to me, it looked like it wasn't taped down the side very well. My summer plans are P.T. for 6 wks. 😑 Saw the surgeon this morn, he said not to wear the sling anymore but, be very, very careful. I am quite nervous, as I am "Queen Of The Klutz". In the afternoon I had a 3+ hr. appt. to learn my new insulin pump (latest technology). Hope I remember everything. I do have manuals and numbers to call if I need help. New supplies, new set up,etc. I was able to start " Summer At Fairacre" by Miss Read I found for sale in my local library sale room for 50¢ once. Have fun w/ yoursister! Hop you cat is doing better!
If it's only the cover slightly torn, I'd repair it myself as long as the book itself isn't damaged. If you do return it for another copy I'd contact them first and advise them what happened with the shipping. They need to wrap the books in bubble or something before they send.
Hi Gina! No big Summer plans this year but I did just finish Riley Sager's IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT and I went to his book launch at our local bookstore and met him in person. I really enjoyed meeting him, what a nice guy. He had questions for every single person who came up to him while signing a book - Great Experience! Happy Las Vegas Sisters Weekend Get Away!

YES! I read ALL of R. F. Delderfield's books when I was in high school and college. It's an ongoing family saga that takes place in England. Don't remember a bit of it now. But I loved them at the time ... maybe because I loved reading big, fat books. If you like the characters in this one, you may consider jumping into the deep end with the whole series.
I have a couple Delderfield's on my shelves to read too - I too am drawn to big, fat reads! Have you read the Morland Dynasty series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles? highly recommend this one. 😊
Alas, I don't usually read books set in England anymore. I'm not sure why the Delderfield / Swann family books appealed to me as a teenaged reader in the 1970s. And I see that the Morland Dynasty series consists of 35 books! Yowsa! Talk about a stack on the nightstand! If I were compelled, I would take on the challenge. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's worth contacting Blackwells to see what they have to say but the postage between the UK and USA is expensive so would not be worth your while sending the book back if you have to pay the postage. If you do decide to repair the dustjacket yourself DO NOT use Sellotape, it goes brittle and yellow over the years and leaves a nasty mark. You need a special type of tape that will not harm the dj. Love your two book finds. I read all of Delderfield's books in the Seventies when they came out and remember loving them. I've still got a lot of the original paperbacks so must look them out and give them a reread. Enjoy your holiday, my husband and I are going on a cruise to Norway next week (we're in the UK) so looking forward to that. I will be definitely taking my Kindle with me!

I have two delightful books by Paul Gallico - both about the lives of cats. _The Silent Miaow_ (1964), a book purportedly written by a cat as a guide for kittens and strays. Mr. Gallico translates from the feline. _The Abandoned_ (1950) ( _Jennie_ in the U.K.), in which a boy finds that he has turned into a cat, is chased out of the house by Nanny, and gets cat lessons from Jennie, a streetwise tabby.

I’ve read Queen Lucia and really loved it. Some of the scenes were so funny they just cracked me up. I will definitely keep up with the series.

The bookstore is in Monroe, on Main Street (and next door to an antique store!)
And if you ever get up that way (up by highway 2) there’s a great antique mall and bookstore in Snohomish too.

My "Trouble w/ Mrs. M. Hurst" book arrived damaged too, but it was the hardcover board (notched on the top in the front and back).😢

You will love his books. I think the first in the series was God is an Englishman. Cozy read, written from male viewpoint.
