Compass Box Orchard House is my favorite of their affordable range.

One of my favorite CB blended malts! If you want to dip your toe into quality blended Scotch I highly recommend Maclean’s Nose. It’s made by Adelphi/Ardnamurchan and is comprised of 70% malt (Ardnamurchan and Glen Scotia) and 30% grain (North British), NCF, and NCA. It’s a wonderful balance of bourbon/sherry casks with a nice peat influence… for $30-35.

Almost everything from Compass Box is great. Price point can very too. But what I really like is their transparency; even in the face of most blended Scotch hiding their sources and percentages.

Absolutely! The transparency is amazing 🥃

I didn’t expect to hear someone describe a whiskey they love as “sour like chewing green apple skins and with the texture of wet gravel” 😂 cheers!

Blends can be so good and represent great value. Compass Box is an outstanding representative of what Blended Malt, Blended Grain and Blended Scott can be. For summer, Orchard House is another good one from Compass Box.

This was the first whiskey I spent alot of money on (for me at the time that is). Just a blind "hey that name and bottle is cool" about 12 years ago

Uncle Cam, the pre 2021 was better when it was older product being put into it. at least 12 year and I bought a half case of it in 2020 of 2019 stuff at $55 a bottle. Sooooooo solid !!! Campbeltown Loch is probably the best bang for the buck now at $55 if you can get it at that price in the U.S. and batches vary as usual with J.A. Mitchell stuff. older Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 from 2019 bottlings at under $55 are super solid and super tasty also. Let's not forget about how good Port Charlotte 10 is but it's more like $70 now and peated and a very different animal and I'm glad I bought a bunch in 2020 at $55-ish a bottle and Glen Scotia 15 was maybe the best thing at that price before 2022. There are so many bad bitches that are great buys and bang for the buck . Oh was I talkin bout whisky ? Maybe. Blessings !!!

Blending is the new wave and shouldn't be shunned. New technology should be embraced as long as it's good for the consumer. Cheers.

Compass Box and their more entry level releases are a great way to get into different Scotch maturation profiles or categories, if you will, while not being handcuffed by always staying within a specific regionality.
Also, its not a "baby step" offerings per se even as they are so inviting and easy going without skimping on flavor with their blending. Spice Tree, Orchard House, Peat Monster or even the Spaniard go down so well.
Thanks for the review Cam. Cheers.

I haven’t tasted my bottle from 2019 in a few years but overall, it’s a pass from me. My ratings regressed on each tasting (four total over likely a few months). But definitely not a bad pour. I love their flaming heart bottles.

Multiple camera angles are noticed and appreciated. I’ll chalk that up to some lessons from the bj bros! 😂

Haha glad you liked it. I used to always use 2, but then got busy with life stuff and decided to shoot reviews straight through on one angle. Now that the channel is doing better and I can devote more time, I’m gonna start upping the production value again!

Unfortunately, I recently (July 2024) just received an email from Compass Box - “This year, we’re saying goodbye to old friends The Spice Tree and The Story of The Spaniard”. Getting quality juice is getting more difficult and one of the reasons that the blenders are getting into the distillery business. Will miss these blends.

Blending is a skill not yet fully embraced in the US. Look at a product like Hibiki from Japan. It’s outstanding IMO. And if you can get your hands on the 21 year old, wow!

If you haven't had the Spice Tree extravaganza I can get a sample sent out to you. Like so many other bottles I wish i would have bought more when they were available at good prices

Do you have the perfect talking speed. I can listen to you at two times the speed and understand what's going on and wrap up at 8 minute video and 4. I have ADHD so it's hard for me to keep attentio, span, so don't take offense to it.

For whatever reason, most Compass Box releases are more expensive in Oregon (where the state sets the price statewide)... this one is $100 here. I think I had a sample of this a few years back, and while I have enjoyed most Compass Box Whiskys I've tried - I don't recall thinking this one was anything special. I might have to try to have another sample to see if my memory was incorrect (: Cheers!

I just don’t consider you a tall reviewer. Tonight this sounds very short. Annoying.
But for realsies, who is replacing John Glaser now that he left Compass Box? Maybe there were no more good old parcels of Whisky for him to work with.

James Saxon is taking over. He’s been Glaser’s right hand man for years. They’re in good hands.

It will be interesting to see where Compass Box goes. Other IBs are opening or own their own distilleries. (Hunter Laing and Ardnahoe, Gordon & Macphail with Benromach, Adelphi and Ardnamurchan)
Regarding blending, I believe James Saxon is the master blender now and has been the lead blender on many of the Compass Box blends. Glaser will be missed, but the show hopefully goes on
