I like that you're one of the people using this social media and this technology craze people are in, to your advantage. Spread the word and reach masses. THIS is what this country needs. More "influencers" like yourself that can change this evil world. It makes me sick to see that a "celebrity" now-a-days is defined by how many likes you got on your newest CHEEKY post. That our youth are now normalized to things that were never shown on T.V before. People need to be woke. Woke for the word of God

This kid's argument was essentially that free speech allows those in power to "harm" those who aren't in power. The problem with his argument is that anyone who has the power to then silence "hate speech" is themselves the one in the position of power, so the result isn't that the weak are protected from the powerful, but that the powerful get another weapon which they can use to silence the weak. You haven't reduced the power of the powerful, you've actually increased it.

    • @BraddahBruce
      @BraddahBruce 2 роки тому +378

Exactly, free speech is for the "powerless" or the person with less "power" still have a right to speak out/up. Many people look at free speech as a victim, rather than a warrior.

EXACTLY. They tried to cancel an Ivy League professor (who was a POC himself) for being against censorship, but he replied that the same free speech allowed the Civil Rights movement to be possible, and had this censorship power been true and realized, the powers that be would’ve prevented it from ever happening.

Of course, Jordan is right. Society can’t even wholly agree on something as basic as the definition of a woman as presented by Matt Walsh. How the hell are we supposed to define something as arbitrary and/or conditional as “hate”? To regulate hate speech would inevitably lead to the criminalization of opinion which we already see playing out in the court of public opinion.

Have you read his book "12 Rules for Life"
Rule 8: Tell the truth. Or at least don’t lie (Summarised Introduction Below)
"Day to day, you may lie to the outside world to get what you want and to avoid pain. You tell lies to appear more competent, to gain status, to be well-liked, to prevent conflict. This is you manipulating the world."
"On a deeper level, you may lie to yourself about what you want. You might have a dream life envisioned by your younger self, without probing carefully into whether you really want it (career and retirement goals are common examples here). You may entertain ideas about what you really want, but deceive yourself into thinking they’re impossible to reach or undesirable after all. You then act in ways that you paper over with more lies, but deep down you know it’s inconsistent with your beliefs, and you feel unsettled."
"You may not be actively misleading other people, but merely lying by omission. This isn’t any better. If your boss does something you dislike, not confronting her about it is still lying - you’re acting inauthentically, not in accordance with your beliefs. If you habitually avoid conflict, don’t complain when mistreated, and suppress your own ideas, you’re still lying to yourself. This makes you feel weak, because your existence has little real meaning. You’ve become a tool to be used, obliterating your independence."
"Even worse, on a meta level, you may be in denial about lying to yourself. You may believe that your truth is the only truth, and that no amount of new knowledge can change what you believe. That all important facts have been discovered, and that everything will work out perfectly."
"Your lie may begin with protecting yourself from reality. You may believe reality is intolerable and must be distorted. You want to avoid that short-term pain. But after a certain point, the lies take on a life of their own."
First you start with a little lie, then support it with further little lies.
Then you distort your thinking to avoid shame of those lies.
Then those lies become necessary and become ritualized into unconscious action.
The longer you lie, the more you believe it, and the harder it is to undo.

The funny thing is I still remember that one time when I was sitting on the same row just across from him on the school bus and thinking about whether I should start a conversation about Xbox and Playstation 😂(we were about 9-10 years old at the time), but ultimately decided against it because I thought he wasn't going to be interested in video games lol. We did have some good laughs and conversations on the school bus rides back home, good old days.
By the time we reached middle and high school, it was obvious to me that Brian was definitely getting into an "Oxbridge". He really set himself apart from the others. Our teachers even had an inside joke where the term "Brian" or "Brian-level" is the definition and golden standard for academic excellence and the highest achievers. Anyways, I haven't seen him since high school. We connected on LinkedIn tho it's always a great and interesting read whenever he posts. If I'm honest, I'm not surprised to see him have such a thoughtful exchange with Jordan Peterson. This is just some Brian-level stuff 💯(at least in my eyes).

Communism and Socialism (America is 50/50 Socialist / Capitalist -- according to Milton Friedman)......The ONLY Left-of-center thinkers exist as non-politicians, even Libertarian Party is right-of-center -- in the same way that Trump is the head of the Tea Party even though it was created for Ron Paul 2007 (which is a just right of center minarchist -- small gov't platform).
All that being said -- Jordan is a far-right "thinker" -- he said things that flamed the flame of Trump supporters and in every way possible "supported" Trump-think -- although, the fair-weathered-survivalist that he is, Jordan is now saying Republicans better wise up and put someone other than Trump in office -- calling Trump a bully and ineffectual to his original brand "I'm the winner".

Overall you're totally misrepresenting what he has said and a bit over dramatic by the fact you think my comment equates to hero-worship, like really, are you 8 years old? 😀, in fact he has criticised Trump plenty of times saying he's a very divisive figure mostly so you're already contradicting yourself, you just want to see him as your bogeyman despite the fact you already admit he's said good and bad about Trump. Maybe instead of using such terms as left or right you should focus on what specifically Jordan said that upset you, because so far it looks like you just jumped on some populist bandwagon for no reason. This kind of nature in discussing things through is being lost by the white noise of group thinks and movements.
But ultimately, people need to realize: offensivity does NOT = hatespeech. Hatespeech = offensivity on a whole different level...it's intending to diminish something as it is, and then some. Offensivity is completely subjective, and up to the individual's coherence and how they take in their information.
For me to say that I don't like Polar Bears, that's offensive to some.
For me to say I want to KILL them all, or see them wiped off the earth because I just DON'T like them at all, THAT is hateful, and can in turn be defined as Hatespeech.
People are mislabeling and heavily misconstruing the actual language of offensivity vs. the language of hatespeech. Ironically, it is those who are arguing against hatespeech that are in turn inciting hatespeech onto others.

I also want to point out that the questioner was receptive to JP's response and didn't interrupt him and instead listened. Take for example where he said "tell me if I'm wrong", then JP interjected with his response to that, and instead of shouting over JP he stopped his question, listened and then proceed to finish his query. The questioner also clapped with the rest of the crowd when JP made a solid argument and did not attempt to convert that of which JP had said into flagrant denial like most popular interviewers do to him.

I loved JBP's line about the worst person to define hate will eventually rise to the position of defining it. This is a simple concept, but something people who live sheltered lives in countries with strong, time-tested institutions often completely ignore. The reality is that bullies and sociopaths thrive in environments that have severe punishments for the breaking of fluctuating and ill-defined rules. That is their bread and butter. You create a system where these types of people can not only doll out severe, socially accepted punishments, but do so anonymously, and make up all of the rules as they go along? That institution will be filled with sociopaths in less than a generation - I don't care how "noble" the goals were at the start.

It's really really sad that this is probably the smartest person I've ever seen have debate with Mr. Peterson. That guy is a student and he clearly thought out thoroughly his question and was prepared for follow up dialogue. I think this is the first time I've ever seen Dr. Peterson interact with someone who was actually on a similar plane. This kid is going places. Hopefully he uses his powers for good and not evil. Lol. But seriously...

This is top quality educational material. It should be studied and annotated. Jordan Peterson gives good comprehensible answers and provides a wide approach to one complex subject.
The young individual is on the right track too. These subject demands an exhaustive discussion of this caliber. The level of complexity is moderate and very understandable too. The discussion doesn't go south with unintelligible terms or technical vocabulary, it is very important of course, but everybody deeply understands how things are developing in the discussion.
Peterson brings in a clean focus on the subject with an easy to follow narrative based on COMMON SENSE.

Jordan Peterson is a gift to humanity and I am certain that he will go down in history as one of the greatest thinkers of all time. His ability to identify and clarify contentious subjects is like watching a master in any artistic endeavor create their masterpiece. I wish more people would shut their mouths, open their ears and quash their pride long enough to truly listen and digest his analysis on the controversial, difficult situations we face today. He is so wise; he has much to teach us if we are intelligent and humble enough to learn from him. God Bless You, Jordan Peterson!

And yet... Would we be reduced to inhumane and animalistic tendency if we don't actually feel offended when something is offensive? Is there not a time when something said or done is very offensive, maybe intended to be so? There is a choice on how to ACT after feeling and being offended.
