The legendary actress and a 5-time Tony winner performs one of the Stephen Sondheim's signature songs.
In 2009 she appeared in first Broadway revival of A Little Night Music as as Madame Armfeldt opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones as Desiree. Ms. Lansbury received her 7th Tony nomination for her performance in it.
The video was uploaded by someone long time ago, but then was taking down. Big thanks to him for posting it!
Today she's 94. Happy birthday Dame Angela!
AL looks better than she's ever looked! Everything is working here: the dress, the earrings, the brooch!
As always, Angela Lansbury is superb. She was such a gift to us. The world was a better place with her in it.
I just LOVE Angela, she’s a gift to Humankind!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love this woman nothing but respect for her great tallent just amazing
Где сами детективы она написала убийства?
It's interesting that Angela Lansbury speaks with an American accent, but, when singing, reverts to her native English one. And she also spoke impeccable "English' when recently on the West End stage as Madame Arcati in 'Blithe Spirit'. And now she's taken it on tour to the US, amazing for someone approaching 90!
it's kinda hard to tell but she does have an British accent but it's not very strong at times you really got to listen to her speak her words then you'll notice
I think she kinda lost it a little from spending so much time playing Jessica Fletcher. She's gotten it back recently
When I listen to her I certainly don’t hear an American accent; I definitely hear British.
@@andyrob3259 She may, of course, be able to switch from one to t'other effortlessly!
Trained singers are taught to use a more British sound as the vowels are more open, consonants are less harsh, and in general it is less nasal.
For example, words with an R after a vowel are much softer with a British accent. Imagine the word car said by a Brit vs American. When singing you want the softer, more open sound.
Angela Lansbury is trained, so her vowel placement is excellent. Trained vocalists from other parts of the world would sound similar.
What a truly great artist! We were so lucky to have enjoyed her genius for decades!
Wonderful! Bravo! This is a song to be sung by the older woman or man. A life time of self knowledge in the song.
Today is October 16th and it is Angela's birthday. Happy birthday, Ms. Lansbury! I absolutely adore you. Thank you for all the work you've done and thank you for being such a great lady that people look up to!
Oh Angela Lansbury, I ADORE you! When you sing 'a song as old as time' it makes all the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! May you live forever!
Today is Dame Angela s 90 birthday. Here in a marveleus performance of a famous Sondheim song
I think maybe this is the best rendition of the song it is really written for an older woman and Angela Lansbury has the experience and the singing voice
RIP Angela Lansbury
(1925-2022).
What a GREAT talent!!
Yes
She is so beautiful and the way she sings this song - riveting
I'm so fascinated by this woman. Wath an artist! Is there something she can't do?
She was a class act. I still remember a quote from her years ago. She wanted to quit her show Murder She Wrote, (take it easy after several years, as she was getting older) but kept going because she'd put her staff out of work.
She still is.
@@scamila17 Now , sadly, "was"
Beautiful! Amazing talent...
Angela is simply breathtaking

Dear World closed on May 31, 1969. A Little Night Music opened on Broadway on February 25, 1973. Gypsy starring Angela Lansbury opened at the Piccadilly Theatre on May 29, 1973.
Rip great Dame Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim in the most famous Sondheim song
RIP this year Glynis Johns too this year :(. She and Angela were great renditions of this song
Wonderful x
Brilliant!
Ms. Lansbury said that she was the first choice to play Desiree Armfeldt in the original Broadway production, but she was performing in Dear World at that time so obviously she was unavailable. Although she must have been mistaken because it was Gypsy she was doing at that time.
Love the dress
Sondheim originally wrote this specifically for Glynis Johns to sing, who starred in the production it’s written for… and she and Angela Lansbury both starred together too with Danny Kaye back in The Court Jester!!!
. . . lovely
Angela Lansbury Rest in peace... and Stephen Sondheim!
Magnificent
The best ever!
Happy 95 !!! 💙💙💙🍀🍀🍀🍁🍁🍁🎶🎂💫🎭🥂🍾✨🌟🌹🤩
SO AMAZING,WONDERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL ANGELA LANSBURY A TRULY ELEGANT, GREAT LADY,SO TALENTED APRIL 26 2019
I know she's lived in America for years and has adapted the accent but she's ours guys, she's originally British and forever will❤️when she's in America I feel so much pride like yep she came from our neck of the woods folks :)
Angela Lansbury,best actress ever.
A beautiful lady 🙏
R.I.P. Stephen Sondheim. 😭💔
Happy90th Bday!!! #thanks 16.X 15
Night Music was in the 60's. Gypsy was in the 70's. Clearly Ms. Lansbury was not mistaken about what she was doing at the time.
She is really a Lady. Wondeful.
Angela’s black courtiers gown - was from the “Murder, She Wrote” wardrobe collection - personally ordered by Angela during the 1992 summer… producers refused to pay for the gown… Angela refused a return to the series…! WE KNEW WHO WON THE DISAGREEMENT … Angela wore the gown - for a TONY AWARD SHOW…!’!
Angela Lansbury : Send in the clowns.. where are the clown
Lumierre and cogsworth: You rang
I just came here from send in the clowns song by Glynis Johns, Glynis and Angele where together in the movie the court jester from 1956 :-)
Nel mio cuore per sempre! ❤
@Smile6784 Lansbury looks ravishing in this gown.
Dame Angela Lansbury was Sondheim first choice for Desire in A little night music and they also ofered the role of Rose in the Gypsy revival a role she chose to do and Glynis Johns was cast as Desiree instead and Sondheim composed Send in.the clowns for her limited singing voice.
Dame Angela and Glynis were so excellent that both received the Tony Award for. their performances . in these roles
Elegant
This brings to mind the old line: everyone's a critic LOL
RIP
RIP Stephen Sondheim. I'm looking for a clip from Hi-De-Hi where Spike sings this song.
Beautiful song that many vocalists try to embellish. However, it was not written to showcase a singing voice, but for the talents of an actress. A solo piano is all it needs for just a light touch of plaintive melancholy. I always cringe when I hear it done with brass and drum rolls. I love Angela from beginning to end. She was quite the sizzler in her youth and the flame never died throughout her career.
Idole
Her singing is next to Elaine Paige.
The song was written as it was because Glynis Johns had literally no range to her singing voice. It was written so that she had to literally do not much more than speak it. They wanted Ms. Johns for the leading role and adapted the song for her.
The song was written long after the show had been in rehearsal (prior to opening). Prince and Sondheim decided that scene needed a song. It was written specifically for Glynis, and her specific skills ... *not* "adapted for her"
She said ‘rich’ twice (instead of ‘bliss’ the second time...)
Well not really, the musical moment was supposed to belong to Henrique. Only when the composition began did Sondheim realize the musical belonged to Desiree.
❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏
Nobody gives gown like Angela. She's a statuesque woman.
Think of it though, Send in the Clowns was written specifically for Glynis Johns. Had Angela Lansbury played Desiree and not Ms. Johns, would this iconic song even exist? Something to ponder. :]
I thought the last words were "dont bother they're here"
They are; she messed the whole thing up.
@picturefan2009 Dear World was in 1968 and Little Night Music in 1973 so how could they conflict
Gypsy was 1973 in London . 1974 here so that seems right
Originally, Prince could not decide between two actresses...Glynnis Johns and Tammy Grimes. In his autobiography, he says he chose Johns for one reason - that she would have taken the disappontment so badly. Lansbury has done this song before and again sings with harshness.
Goodness me....so what year was this..2009 as in the notes...seems much much earlier....
43rd Annual Tony Awards at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on June 4, 1989. ♫
When You Bring Me Out,Can You In Introduced Me As Joker-Arthur.
Wow - okay, I'm a totally a Joker fan... but that was a random comment for this video. I came here for Angela Lansbury!
@FilmNoirFreak It was the 80's what are you expecting?
ElPerfectTorso The
I think Barbara Striesand's version is the best. It is a beautiful but depressing song. LOL.
At this point she wasn't a Dame.
I hate to burst your bubble but she has no range. She is almost just talking the lyrics.
A godawful song. Absolutely dreadful. Written by an imposter trying to imitate Rachmaninoff but producing only a kind of stereotypical sentimental shell.
Are you aware of the context of the song? Maybe the reason you found it superficial is that it's been taken out of context by so many popular singers who use it that it loses its original meaning among the public.
Or maybe you just don't like musical theatre. In that case, de gustibus non est disputandum
To be fair, as insulting comments go, this one has a veneer of being cultured.
