I wanna cry from the way Sondheim looks at Landsbury as she performs! It's such a soft gaze, filled with warmth and adoration at listening to her bring his words to life again, as she did so many years ago! You can tell he deeply admires her as a performer and as a person, and he's just beaming with pride as she sings!
What talent, what emotion, what perfection. So exquisitely delivered. Let us hope Dame Angela retains her health, both physically and mentally, as Olivia de Havilland has been blessed . To the youth, specifically the Theater...please, oh, please view the heart filled performances Dame Angela has shared with the world....watch the subtle movement of the eyes, the hand, the body, and mouth. Watch her voice start as a hushed whisper...rising to an attention grabbing roar...the emotions transferred to one's soul...telling not just a story, but, more than a feeling....a life, an untold joy, then, in a split second...a character consumed in paralyzing fear. Oh, the magic of the Theater. Let it take you to places you have NEVER been before visited.
I just have to say whoever you are you got it right I just turned 60 and coming out of a long illnessI'm trying to be a part of the change instead of part of the problem meaning I need inspiration to reboot and understand remember why I loved the theatre is for the first 55 years of my life despite a whole lot of my own issues with ambitionand the egos and what you have to do to what we call it making it despite all that crap I've had an incredible luck in terms of their brilliant people I have found in my life that are all thriving in the theater and now that I'm coming back to it if not for examples like this inspiration that I so sorely need.. the way of the English theater community that for years has valued inperfection and grit , wrinkles even missing teeth unlikely Americans who until recently thanks to braver upcoming in this case female theater professionals finally changing the scene bearing they're in perfect bodies and a few people like Jane Fonda willing to stop with the botox willing to take on her age and then to look at this performance oh my God but anyway your comments were brilliant thank you
Remarkable! In a "simple" concert performance, nobody else can touch Lansbury's Madame Armfelt for conjuring up a bygone era of courtesans, rapturous riches, rambunctious ribaldry, sheer pleasure in love and living, passed on to her Desiree, passed on to Time and memories . . . finally collapsing in blessed exhaustion from it all . . . and sleep. The entire history of this woman, this character, this way of life, this story, in five minutes. Amazing. Truly amazing.
In 1965 a very young and brash Stephen Sondheim launched a production called Anyone Can Whistle. It was witty and sharp and ahead of its time and it closed after only.nine performances. But it featured Angela Lansbury as the Mayoress, sort of the villain of the story. So Lansbury has been part of Sondheims career from the very start.
Dame Angela Lansbury was a great character actress. Watch her assume the character of the Baroness here before she sings, quite brilliantly, "Liasons". She doesn't just touch greatness, she clasps it firmly in both hands.
Unbelievable. I am dumbstruck at the sheer magic of this indefatigable lady. No words can describe her artistry. She totally embraces her performances. Could watch her all night. Thank you Dame Angela Lansbury . Xxx
An incredible performance from an incredible entertainer, a true ICON of stage and screen. Dame Angela Landsbury is a one of a kind woman of pure class, grace and incredible talent. Thank You Dame Angela for entertaining us for all these years, you will be remembered always.
This incomparable and brilliant actress is a treasure. No one can touch her versatility. Yet, with this kind of talent, where is HER "Driving Miss Daisy" or "Trip to Bountiful"? She has been terribly neglected by the film industry...
A real gem and a class act throughout! So naturally elegant with that extra touch of malicious look. One of the most multi-talented and interesting legends ever.
Angela Lansbury is a force of nature and an international treasure, the epitome of class and elegance, an astonishingly talented actress and singer and the very definition of the word "star." We are so lucky she is still thrilling audiences at 85. Thank you for posting this!
I was watching this in the background of doing other things, but slowly the other things stopped and I became riveted. This is the hallmark of a performer who is just...inexplicably, indescribably wonderful: to pull someone out of themself to feel and participate in something entirely other, smoothly, non violently. Convincingly, but slowly. Unnoticed, and yet noticed entirely. Wonderful.
I quite liked the production. Miss Jones was an unexpected bonus, but my wife and I went to see Angela Landsbury. She did not disappoint. What an extraordinary woman and what an extraordinary career.
A Paradox 7 minutes ago Isn't it odd how things develop? Angela was 39 (1964) before she appeared on the musical stage. She was in a Sondheim flop (strange but true) namely "Anyone Can Whistle" it closed after 9 performances and 12 previews' Luckily during that brief run it was seen by Jerry Herman, who was so impressed by Angela that he had to have her in the lead role in his musical Mame.In fact he told the director and producer that without Angela that he would't release the score to them. So Angela's musical career started. She has admitted that she was rather unwilling to appear in "Anyone Can Whistle" as she didn't think she had a singing voice.Even though it was a flop look what it lead to for Angela
To have this sort of lost talent at our fingertips to view for years and show others on how its done, god bless the Internet. People, love, learn, enjoy and this is how its done. God bless Angela
I'd like to see (or make) a "who sang it best?" for this song. Dame Angela's rendition would be *very* hard to beat. Some lines that for other singers really don't work sound natural when she sings them.
Wow. Not really a fan of this type of music, but she is absolutely amazing. I have been searching "Angela Lansbury" for the last 20 mins on here. She is like a 30 year old in an 85 year old body. I remember her growing up on "Murder She Wrote." Its like she hasn't changed at all from 20 years ago. I hope she lives another 85 years. There is no live performer today than can compete with her, not even at 85. I do hope Ms. Lansbury reads the UA-cam comments about her.
I even named her Desiree is a brilliant lyric because it gives background to what kind of mother she's been and what influence she has had over Desiree. And the raisins/ liasons lyric is fun, a brief descent for Sondheim into Cole Porter wit and silliness.
If only technology was so much more advanced, we could put this absolute gem of a lady into a younger body and maybe get another million + years of such astounding performances all over again. I take my hat off to you Dame Angela Lansbury and thank you so much for entertaining me for my whole lifetime. Please go on stage as long as you can and once again thank you very much x
Perhaps we can cajole Julie Andrews back to sing this in a future revival of ALNM? I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult for her to speak sing it through.
@ChipL955 I agree 101%. I'm only 26, so sorta only knew her as "Jessica Fletcher." I don't know how anyone could disagree that she is certainly one of the best actresses to have ever lived. Not to mention she is 85 and can still give a flawless performance. Awesome.
I saw Hermione Gingold in 1974 in A Little Night Music and her performance was lukewarm compared to this expressive, masterful performance by our theater's great treasure, Angela Lansbury. Sondheim's witty theatrical number comes to LIFE. It's great that he was present to see it performed perfectly.
I saw her do this part on Broadway, and wonderful as she was, it was such an underpowered production, with such a small orchestra, that it didn't have the impact of this full-orchestra version.
@TheTerribleman Shake hands with Sondheim...that must have been an event, also. I have never had the privilege of meeting him, but I did receive a nice letter from him a few years back. I live in London. He took the trouble. What a gent! Miss Lansbury should be made a Dame.
Ms. Lansbury is a National Treasure and one of the greatest actresses of all time. Now that she has an Honorary Oscar it high time her motherland to award this extraordinary talent with a Dame title: www.gov.uk/honours/nominate-abroad
Luckily,it seems that she has triple citizenship (U.K~American~Irish) So she would qualify for a full Damehood (not honourary like some). We can only keep our fingers crossed.
Sondheim said "Everyone has to audition for me... Except Angie."
Gods, watching her drop slowly into character as she sets up the performance is AMAZING!
This is what I show people as an example of how a specific fidgetting movement can help you as an anchor to get into your role.
@@niek024 YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This woman is amazing. Even better as she aged. No joke. All actresses should take a leaf out of her book.
Not just singing, but performing in every line at 85? Astounding!
A haunting performance. When a singer becomes the song, magic happens.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Anyone Can Whistle, but you're forgiven for not remembering :)
I wanna cry from the way Sondheim looks at Landsbury as she performs! You can tell he deeply admires her as a performer and as a person, and he's just beaming with pride as she sings!
I love that woman❤
I saw her perform this on Broadway, I swear time stood still ❤️
You lucky son of a gun

Thanks for comment, Michael. You are right. Angela was an extremely gifted musical interpreter.
This woman is unbelievable. I just love her so much, a true icon.
Remarkable!

Wie? Wie kann eine einzige Person so viel Wärme und Charme ausstrahlen? Adorable...
She's a class act all the way around. They'll never be another like her. We are blessed that God has speared her to us these many years 🙏 Amen.
can someone look at me the way Sondheim looks at Lansbury :)
Both him AND Cameron became excited little MT loving schoolboys in her presence.
It's such a wonderful pure look he gives her. Lovely

Dame Angela singing Sondheim. Sher is one of the Great Living legends.
I love how before Ms. Lansbury even starts performing, beginning from 0:41 she transforms into Madame Armfeld. What a great actress!
Get up on your feet when in the presence of Greatness! Love you Angela
Sondheim looks like he's in love when he looks at her lol I would be to
Absolute brilliance. Breathtaking. Rest in power, Ms. Lansbury.
she just. I mean can she. I can't. she is so amazing she's just so... so.. there aren't words to describe this treasure love her so much

I've watched a ton of Sondheim clips and a ton of Lansbury clips but this is by far THE most outstanding.
Aunty Ange you never disappoint ...see you Thursday for our usual!?
P Hocking Wow! Are YOU fortunate! What a wonderful talent and, more importantly, a GREAT human being!
She's still got it!
A lovely treause to the American Theatre. Long Live Angela Lansbury!
I would do anything to see Angela Lansbury perform. And it's amazing that she's 85!
That was simply magnificent. I have never loved her more.
A wonderful lady love you lots Angela!!

We will miss you, an unrepeatable talent...her star will shine on!! Bon Voyage, Dame Angela!
Wow!!! She truly is incredible. Wow.
No one like her. No one. RIP
This is a class in singing and acting!!!!!!! Mr Sondheim is so proud........
it's a master class in acting a song
I quite liked the production. Miss Jones was an unexpected bonus, but my wife and I went to see Angela Landsbury. She did not disappoint. What an extraordinary woman and what an extraordinary career.

Angela you are simply UNIQUE...I LOVE YOU and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
I find it beautiful that I discovered this only a week before her passing, such a brilliant artist.
Utterly sublime. Magnificent.
Amazing! I love how, like a light switch, she can flip in and out of character. That is experience!
Какой Солнечный человек!!! Такой позитив от нее исходит!!! Смотрела бы и смотрела!!! Гениальная актриса!!!! Очаровательная женщина!!!
Wonderful performance, such a difficult song to sing, so complex!❤️❤️❤️
Looks like even Sondheim was amazed.
To have this sort of lost talent at our fingertips to view for years and show others on how its done, god bless the Internet. People, love, learn, enjoy and this is how its done. God bless Angela
Magical swords from the master forgers wielded by master swordsmen will cut through the fabric of ages and language barriers anytime
She's such a boss!

Too much cuteness in one woman 💖
I SOOOOOOOOO love her!
Terrific!
Удивительная, потрясающая актриса и женщина.
Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim. Will we ever see their likes again?
How fortunate we are to enjoy their extraordinary gifts!

Marilyn Hayden that's because Lansbury is literally a goddess
