I'm a Radio idiot - just came here to make a cheap purchase. This is a great breakdown and the spreadsheet of the cost vs. quality is super useful. Thanks for doing the consumer reports for us all
Back in 2009 Kentucky was hit by a massive ice storm. And nobody had a way to charge their cellphones. I turned my walkie talkie on spanning and heard a guy talking about he had a generator and would be happy to charge cell phones. They definitely have a place for shtf.
Oxbow Renegade 2.0, definitely. Sometimes I wish I didn't gravitate towards expensive gear, but in this case it happened before I knew the prices of each one. Have noticed that with electronic gear, you usually get what what you pay for. Want the best, overall? Open up your wallet after hitting the ATM machine. Also, very generous of you to do this Giveaway. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and good luck with the giveaway! Yeah, you defintely do get what you pay for. It was brought to my attention after the video that Oxbow also is freeze proff and compatibile with GoPros so it should have done a little better in overall score. It is truly a very nice radio.
Looking to get some walking talkies and came across your video. Thank you for making it and I am sold on the Retevis the fact that it has the option to run on 3 AA batteries is
Each Cobra RX680 has a covered micro usb port on the side that can be used to charge individually. The cradle isn't the only way to charge, and therefore the included cradle is actually a benefit.
Your spreadsheets rock! I do consider myself a bit of a radio nerd, yet I’m also aware that my knowledge is virtually nothing compared to some real radio enthusiasts! Radio is super important. I earned my ham license a few years ago and have only looked at ham-band radios… never even learned about these FRS options. They seem quite capable and awesome considering the lack of needing a license! This video is fantastic. Can’t ask for more of a quality test! The Rocky Talkie would definitely interest me but honestly these all have their perfect audiences.
Thanks DDD! Yeah, radios are extremely important! Are you planning to use them to communicate with your family in a grid down situation? Your setup might deserve a video too lol. Yeah the performance of the 2w FRS radios defintely exceeded my expectations and I've seen other line of site tests with these radios and they hit over 20 miles.
@@UrbanSurvivor I do have a radio video scheduled for Aug 12! I think I’m 12 weeks ahead with uploads lol… it can be hard at times to not just make videos public but I like having the cushion of time in case of emergency (such as when my dog and I were attacked by another dog last weekend and I ended up getting the tip of my pinky nearly bitten off and had to get my dog stitched up). It happens! The backlog of videos helps, though. My setup basically consists of just a couple BF-F8HP radios with a decent amount of accessories. I’ve wanted the Alinco DR-735T as a base-station setup for a while, so that may happen but honestly I’m impressed with what can be done with a couple of Baofengs with the right knowledge and accessories!

Great review bro. You def put in a lot of time. I want a good walkie talkie for cruises and international travel. I golf and want to stay in contact with my family when I don't have cell service. Could the walkie talkie be a good option for the middle east?
I have to ask, why with all the modern technology now days, why don't these radios use Bluetooth so you can link to ear buds? Ear buds have become so popular now days. For myself, I work in heavy equipment and its loud. I wear noise canceling ear buds all day and listen to music, but we also need to contact truck drivers on radios... it would be nice if I could hear my radio through the ear buds..
Midland GXT walkie-talkies are the best on the market. Given the fact that they have a 36 mile range with line of sight, and in the woods, or in the city, you can get between 5 and 10 miles. These are the only radios that I trust to take Hunting with me when I go to Colorado in the back mountains.
what kind of midland gxt are you using? i am just a noob that wants a direct contact thru radio while we are travelling me and my friend in a convoy on the highway...
@@tacticalsweater5119 yes I am, lol it depends on the buildings, businesses, residential areas, along with other things. If I was in downtown Dallas, I would completely agree with you, but given the fact that I live in the panhandle of Texas, I get that range with these radios.
sorry pal 36 miles you need a 35 dollar license to do that as you are talking more than that the license is 35 dollars for ten years I am still good for 7 years and I am working on my ham license again.

Bonjour, avez vous déjà essayé les baofen f22?
Merci, je cherche un retour sur ce modèle
Midland GXT walkie-talkies are the best on the market. Given the fact that they have a 36 mile range with line of sight, and in the woods, or in the city, you can get between 5 and 10 miles. These are the only radios that I trust to take Hunting with me when I go to Colorado in the back mountains.
what kind of midland gxt are you using? i am just a noob that wants a direct contact thru radio while we are travelling me and my friend in a convoy on the highway...
No effin way you're getting 5-10 miles in town.
@@tacticalsweater5119 yes I am, lol it depends on the buildings, businesses, residential areas, along with other things. If I was in downtown Dallas, I would completely agree with you, but given the fact that I live in the panhandle of Texas, I get that range with these radios.
sorry pal 36 miles you need a 35 dollar license to do that as you are talking
more than that the license is 35 dollars for ten years I am still good for 7 years
and I am working on my ham license again.
@@donalderickson-si8ww not true 😂 do your research before posting stupid comments! Look up the walkie-talkies and I am talking about and you will see what I mean.
Great video! many thanks ❤
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Which ones are not made in China?
The Retevis RT45P would be my pick due to the IP rating alone
Great video. 👍 That's long time I had some walkie talkies 😃 but had a lot of fun with that, even that was some crap ones. I am impressed by abilities of some of these. I like high quality stuff, so rather buy one great thing, instead of many useless ones (dont know if my collections will 100% agree with that 😃. So my favorite is Rocky Talkie, great distance, runtine and easy to use. Thanks and take care 🤟
Thank you! This is the new format you'll be seeing for most of my videos moving forwards! Yeah walkies talkies are fun and they are a gret emergency tool too! My parents live close enough by for me to communicate with them with most of these radios too. Great choice on the Rocky Talkie!
@@UrbanSurvivor That's cool. 👍
some good ones to choose from i'm going simple and going for the Baofeng BF-88FT
Great choice! Can't go wrong with Baofeng!
Los of people are saying that the Retevis batteries are shit...very disappointing, It was the best budget for me
I just want a simple walkie-talkie to talk with my son he lives 5 miles from me you,any suggestions????
Thanks for the reviews. I like the Retcevis. Have used Motorola and cheap knockoffs at work. Looking to buy a pair of the Retcevis for camping and travel.
Thanks for watching Tom and glad you enjoyed the videos! Yeah you wont be dissappointed with Retevis they are fantastic for the price.
Amazing video! Your video is the best (only?) comparison that uses real world results! I wish Rocky talkie had NOAA radio built in too.
Yeah havent seen any comparable walkie talkie range test videos which is suprising!
Please test the HYS 25-Watt UHF HT. I think it is the best walkie-talkie!
I wished every product review would have a spreadsheet rating and a SWOT with short, straight to the point comments without the usual long blabla bullshit. Excellent video review!!
Thanks Ben! Planning a similar video with GMRS radios as well.
@@UrbanSurvivor I'm looking forward to that 👍🏼 Keep up the great work.
The Retevis walkie-talkies look like one of the best values among the lot, if I'm understanding this information correctly. Great video!
Yes, exactly! Definetly the best value in the lineup.
Interesting comparison! The Rocky Talkie talkies look great. I’ve been eyeing a pair to communicate with my kids when they play outside 😂
Thank you! I'm sure your kids will enjoy that! My daughters do too lol
that is what I have been talking about know has a one mile leash With mission control running the show at control center
Which has longest runtime?
I think Btech is the Second best budget radio
The orange one and I follow you guys
Nice touch adding the airtable chart. Gives a great summary to your vlog comparing each device.
Glad you enjoy the aritable! Makes it easier for me to keep organized too lol Which radio was your favorite?
The Rocky talkie seems to be the best one
Just get a Baofeng UV5R and program for FRS. You'll be able to get more watts and a better antenna. Price: $20
I'm not sure if its legal to broadcast greater than 2w on FRS channels, especially with no license.
@@UrbanSurvivor you could just set the power to Medium if you were concerned about it.
Thank you. It would rock if you added metric to the video.
Liked your methodology, hard to pick anything other than what got the highest score, so looks like I'm in the market for some Rocky Talkies.
Thank you! This is the new format you'll be seeing in most videos moving forward! Great choice with the Rocky Talkies!
Great review
Rocky talkie n please I'm so much need of it but I don't have money. Please help me. I need a pair of any. Please I'm cannot buy one.
the Rocky Talkie is the best one for me too in what it offers and how it looks
Yeah its a very good performing and nice looking radio and seems to be a favorite in the comments too.
Damn we need a T800 with the waterproof rating of the RT45p and better range ig
Oxbow is very nice. Great review and all some great walkies. Honestly was hard to choose. So I just kinda picked the first one that came to mind while typing. Lol

Great video, I'm going with the Rocky Talky. Thanks
I ordered 2 using your link.
Thank you! I'm sure you will enjoy them!
Hi US! Great review! I like the Retrevis HTs and may pick some up!
Thanks Greg! Yeah they did suprisingly well and I'm very impressed by how they performed for the price!
