Beatles Decca 1962 September in the Rain

- "September in the Rain" is a popular song about nostalgia by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, published in 1937. The song was introduced by James Melton in the film Melody for Two. It has become a standard, having been recorded by many artists since.
In January 1st 1962, the Beatles recorded a rock and roll interpretation during their Decca audition. The Beatles - and Paul McCartney in particular - were familiar with show tunes and soundtrack songs, and often incorporated beat versions into their early repertoire.
Here I´ve intended to show a possible rendition with the same gear they used to play in 1961/62.
- Rickenbacker 325 Capri (John)
- Hofner 500/1 61 bass (Paul)
- Gretsch 6128 Duojet (George)

its kind of Rock but its like Jazzy thing you know what i mean
aint i right
haha yeah
It’s a cover of a Jazz standard
That is some serious jazz chords for 19 year old George
No playstations or Netflix and a lot of hard practice
@@lightningleaf23 thank you chris
@@lightningleaf23Better yet, NO TIKTOK
he was actually 18 right here
Love these. Loving the deep cuts.
Could you do Soldier of Love soon? it’s from this era obviously and is a song you could perfect.
I'd love to see this one as well. (Great vocals on that song too)
Love this one too and also Keep Your Hands off my Baby.....I have lots and lots of stuff to do and want focus in 57-early 62....but maybe will do those 2.
@@StuSutcliffe60 Yes awesome - the 57-62 period was so Rocking for the Beatles
Hate to break it to you, but guitar groups are on their way out.
Hello, I’m from Israel and not much people here the Beatles or rock in general here, your channel showed me some good music, I’m having a band and it’s going pretty good and I literally learned guitar from you.
Nice work. John and George are playing some pretty jazzy chord shapes in this tune. What clever young lads they were!
Very! So young and so advanced musicians....
How about, My Bonnie??
Coming....
nice key change in the middle. A question I've had about their learning/playing these fairly complex songs they covered: they likely didn't have sheet music to go off of, so they picked these up by ear? Easy to do with 3-4 chord songs, but a song like this has changes that have to be discerned and figured out. Comments?
They were as simple as it is to say "Geniuses" they were well ahead of their time.
I'm sure they collaborated and learned from many artists in Hamburg. They were playing constantly
@@Zemlya99 as i say geniuses and geniuses colaberated at same time
Do you think its possible they may have had piano sheet music to work from?
Yesterday, I sat down and watched this video for 3 hours straight at various speeds: 75%, 50%, and even 25% and I finally got all the chords and guitar licks down. It's a tricky song. I always get perturbed when folks write-off the early Beatles as fluff music.
Hey, love your channel man, been subscribed for awhile. I have a few of the guitars you have, Hamburg-period big for me. This song is one of my favorite covers of their pre-fame days. Having trouble working out some of these chords though, I think I've got a few of them, but it's difficult because looking at the screen obviously looking from front, you have to turn it round a bit. Any chance you could break down the chords on this? Finger positions?
Hello, I would like to try to help you by giving you some chords that could be playing in the song (I don't guarantee that they are correct but it is an approximate)
1- George at the beginning of the song is playing a kind of G13 style chord and then after playing a G9.
2- George plays a simplified version of the G chord and then moves on to a Gmaj7 chord
3- George plays a kind of simplified version of the Am chord without playing the bass of the sixth string and then moves on to an AmMaj7 chord, after which he returns to the Am mentioned above.
4-George seems to play a D9 chord and then move to an Aø7 chord
5-George ends this part with a Bm7 and Am chord
G13,G9,G,Gmaj7
Am,AmMaj7,D9,Aø7,Bm7,Am
This channel appeals to my niche interests fully.
TheBeatlesonBlank Mine as well, my friend.
That must be the stolen Paul McCartney's bass
Great American Classic Performed By Fab Four, Paul McCartney's Brilliant Voice!
Jazzy chords George on this one...
Wow a song that escapes me but it is wonderful.
Again man you are perfect at this and also how do you know how to play these olds song and where do you find them
This one was a challenge...very few (rare) sources to learn the chords and thanks to a friend that gave me a mock stereo vs of Decca audition... so I could listen a little more of George part. But as sometimes happen with covers, some chords are what I thought to be ( very low or bad quality).
The Beatles were known for their incredible chord changes, and this song is no different. Beautiful.
Awesome, I've been hoping you'd do this one for a while! I wonder which version of the song they learned it from. I always imagined it was the Dinah Washington version for some reason, but I guess Frank Sinatra also had a version around that time.
There's not many songs where George would have used that major 6th chord shape that you do on the D6, so it's interesting to see it here. Also nice to see Paul's impromptu bass ending on your cover. Great job!
I think this emphasizes how crucial to the Beatles sound was their openness to earlier musical forms. Without their, particularly McCartney's, appreciation of the likes of show tunes, jazz, crooners, classical music etc then their range when it came to writing their own songs would have been far narrower. Many other artists never went wider than simple rock and roll 3 or 4 chord tunes and many that did range further afield did so under the second-hand influence of The Beatles.
Thank You!
I've always suspected the Dinah Washington version as well!
Great cover Stu, do you think you can do the Decca versions of Money (That’s What I Want) & Till There Was You?
Soon.
I know you've got lots more from the decca tapes to do, and i look forward to them, but it would be cool if you did an early version of i saw her standing there, perhaps the one at the cavern rehearsals!
It´s on the list..
It’s unfair that you have all 3 of my dream guitars ☹️
lol my thoughts
Magnificent!! George is on another level altogether. John seems to be just playing a second bass line -- but why would he have to detune his whole guitar for that? Also, I never noticed the missing beat near the end of this song before. It seems to be present in some recordings, but not all: ua-cam.com/video/0UUMAvddl2E/v-deo.html. So I guess it was just a defect introduced by a bootleg of a bootleg of the actual Decca tapes.
Strange to me too (that missing beat)...as I don't know but probably a bootleg error recording...(it would be hard all 4 guys do this intentionally, at precisely same time). Thanks
Please make my Bonnie
StuSutcliffe needs more attention! The BEatles would never be famous without him
I would love to see you do a video where you show all your guitars, and a mini review for all of them
You are doing AMAZING work. Thank you so much for accurately playing/showing these early Beatles originals and covers! Fans like me (who love their lesser-known tunes) appreciate you SO much.
yes, we really do!!!
Awesome; thanks so much for these videos. That opening Chord is cool - I learned a new one! Keep up the good work. Request: 'My Bonnie' - I would love to see the guitar solo; was it originally performed by Tony Sheridan, or George ??
Thanks. Sheridan has played the solo (an edit piece from another take).
My bonnie :''v
I've never heard of it, but still it's a wonderful cover!
Stu could you either do Decca long tall sally or money pls
Greetings from Argentina , would you do I'm Talking About You and Sweet Little Sixteen(Star Club 1962)?
Sure
Great covers, and John plays lead on both!👍👍
Does anyone know the chords to this?
Bro I think that is:
G7M Am7 D7
And after the tone change to Ab, it starts to be
Ab7M Bbm7 Eb7
In the end I can't say it with assurance but I think that is:
F° G° Bb° Eb° G
The riff in the end should be
G A B C D E F# G6
When is the next video coming out? It's been about a month and it's time
"Baking"....almost ready....
Okay.
Can you make the song "take good care of my baby?
Sure..
Great job, Stu!!! Keep on rockin'!
Thank You!
Love This Amazing Paul McCartney Vocal Wow
Ok am i stupid or can i just mot comprehend Johns simple part here
Edit: THE GUITAR IS TUNED DOWN IM STUPID
What tuning?
@@aidenemerson8545 My guess is a full step down. If you don’t know what it is, it is DGCFAD instead of EADGBE
James gulieio well darling: well darling is a song recorded in 1960 with Stu stuclife (bass), John Lennon (Rythm), Paul McCartney (lead). It's in a blues tune, which is High E string to D, B string to A, G string to F, D string to C, A string to G, and Low E string to D, then once in that tune the chords and order is this, E7 to A7 back to E7 then B7 then A7 and back to E7 (E7, A7,E7,B7,A7,E7) the solo goes (number means fret and letter means string) 2D 0G 2G B1G2/B3G4 (/ means slide) 0G 2D and repeat now there are some parts I haven't learned yet but I'm talking to my guitar teacher for help, it's also in a E minor pentatonic scale, oh and the start of it (well darling) is 2D 0G 2G/4G, 3B, 4E (high E) and then you slide that shape down each fret from that
Finally!!! i love this song!!! thank you!!!
Thanks
Do reminicing, please!!
Can u do a lesson
pls do maggie may
Can u please do Maggie Mae!!🙏🙏
Yes (probably taking Nowhere Boy vs I don´t know)
VERY GOOD!
Stu, as usual it’s fine, I’d like to know what settings you use on George’s guitar? I mean the sound of the sensors and the tone. It would be interesting to see how you would perform Falling in Love Again, for me this is not the easiest song in their repertoire. P.S And by the way, it’s funny that George plays a part that looks more like jazz.
Bridge pickup at start (with little amp distortion)and middle pos ( both pickups) to have more jazzy tone in the rest of song.
@@StuSutcliffe60 Thank you!
Very good...awesome actually!
Im dying to learn those lead chords
Very nice..beatles.. song!

Where did you get the Rickenbacker?

John stole his original "Ricky" from another rock group, allegedly.

Those bad quality 1960 home recordings are hard to listen and get anything right but YES I intend to do them....
I yearn to learn how to play this one day.
