  • In this video I answer some general chicken questions and address some specific questions / and common criticisms about my first chicken coop. This is a pretty low-key video, but I hope that it's helpful for both novices and seasoned chicken pros.

Thanks again for sharing. You mentioned that you had to move the water bucket because the chickens got to big. How high up would you make the bottom of the coop if you wanted to leave enough room for the proper height on the water bucket?

3 sq ft of coop space and 10 sq ft in the run. You can maybe get away with less but if you want a hassle free flock then this is what I recommend. I’ve been raising chickens since the ‘70s. You’ve got a great design that eliminates a lot of problems. That’s half the battle right there. I believe in treating animals properly and your coop/run does that, provided you don’t keep too many birds. I wish everybody had a coop/run as nice as yours. It only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole barrel. Setups like yours are a welcome sight!

Thanks for watching! I will never cut it too close w coop and run space again. I learned my lesson the hard way when the chickens started pecking each other. Hoping to purchase a property where they can free range .

Algae could probably be prevented if you get a black bucket instead of a white one.

Im not positive, but I think I’ve also heard that you can prevent algae by putting some copper pennies in the water.

can I make a coop 2 or 3 floors high and have 4 chickens on each floor? I don't have much room on my property.

Yes, but if you don’t have much room on your property, I wouldn’t have a ton of chickens. 3/4 of the problems i ran into were related to not giving the chickens enough space during the day. It’s a huge pain if they start pecking each other.
