I adore my Frydeck Micholitziana. Velvet Elvis is constantly in my top 5 fav! When I first was gifted my baby Frydeck in 2020. I had the same experience with the 3 leaf, one dying off cycle. I too thought it was just how this plant lived, and same again! My died off and I swear to you, I also brought mine 'back to life' thru the stump.👏🏼 Hurray for experiments working!! And thanks to you Melissa, I was confident when choosing to move to Pon. I'm SO grateful to you for sharing all of your experiences and knowledge. You have not only influenced some of my purchases 😈😏 You have enriched my plant knowledge extensively. And now a year later, here we are just watching you blossom into a small business owner. It's been wonderful following your journey. Thank you for allowing us to be apart of it. So happy I found you. 💚 🥰
I love my Alocasia frydek (non variegated). I fell in love with yours some time ago and I’ve been trying and struggling with all specimen. This past winter, I switched her to pon and got her a fancy light. She stopped yellowing on the edges and has kept several leaves. I recently removed the light, thinking “it’s spring/summer, she should be fine.” She was NOT fine lol she root rotted and gave me smaller leaves in return. Overall, I’m always trying to please her. She’s stunning. I pay little to no attention to my variegated Frydek and she was expensive, as you could imagine. But this one has a hold on my heart. She’s my baby. 🥹
@@plantsbymelissa Oh man I went back to check and sure enough "temporarily out of stock". Right now they're still taking orders but who knows when that'll ship. I just ordered two of the 12L bags because it's so hard to know when you'll be able to get more. Even mine is estimating delivery 6/12-24.
Oh I love this new series! My micholitziana is just starting to size up in pon now and just got a baby Frydek a couple days ago, so the timing on this one is perfect for me :)
Mine grew a LOT since the 5 months I have it. I agree semi hydro is the way to go, as the yellowing leaves are sacrificed when new leaves need nutrients and water to support and if they don’t get it they will flop the oldest leaf. With semi hydro the deterioration of the old leaves are a lot less drastic. I have mine in semi hydro, using pafcal chips. I use Canna Vega A+B full strength for nutrient water. Pest is not an issue with mine because I just spray it down and wipe the leaves twice a week. Sounds high maintenance but it’s quite therapeutic. One last thing: i had another plant and it was doing great until I listened to another UA-camr who suggested transitioning it to water to get rid of the soil roots and grow water roots. It did not work for me and it started giving out sour smell and even the water roots eventually rotted off. My current plant luckily came in pafcal already so it need no transition. When repotting it I jut used more pafcal chips and not disturb the original root mass.
Oo for the bottom stump I wonder if the stems will multiply even further when you chop each stem. That would be so cool and the alocasia would look super bushy once it grows back hahaa
They look sooooo beautiful!!!!! I'm so happy for you! Would love to take a closer look at how you stake the huge one. Mine is getting really top-heavy and wobbly...

Melissa she's just gorgeous!!!! What a beauty no wonder she's the feature plant this month!! And I TOTALLY agree with you re pon and Alocasia. It's a match made in heaven!! I've pretty much converted all my plants to semi hydro (either pon or LECA) and they are thriving even now pushing out new leaves (and its winter here). Obviously the conditions I provide are also favourable, plus our winters in Sydney are VERY mild. But yeah, semi hydro ALL THE WAY 😅🥳💪
I have a Alocasia Micholitziana that I need to decide what to grow in and was trying to decide between PON or LECA. I think I will be going with PON. lol I love this Alocasia! It's one of my favorites.
I only have 3 varieties of Alocasia but 6 corms of my Poly in one pot plus the stump in another. They are all in Pon except the Poly and as I had bought a Pon substitute originally and wasn’t sure how much, if any, it contained of slow release fertiliser, I added a little more. I now have a large bag of Lechuza Pon so plan to transfer the Poly from leca to Pon in the spring. I look forward to watching anything you have in your playlist about growing with Pon. I’ll also start using my Foliage Focus for the Hoyas and any other plants I have in Pon so far, slowly taking it up to full strength by spring. I tried Pon ( my own mix) about 3 years ago. I lost a couple plants and got scared so went back to a chunky mix. I am now in the process of going back to Pon. I actually have a variegated Thanksgiving cactus and 3 Hoya still in the Pon from 3 years ago! I would never use Leca because to me it is so ugly! Haha. It just looks so unnatural to me. Pon is easy to make. There are recipes online. Use your own fertilizer. I rinse my Pon before use. I just put it into the pot prior to planting and let the water run over it until clear. I love Melissa's videos!
I got a Frydek as a little corm 7 months ago. It was my first ever alocasia and for some reason it's absolutely thriving. I must have been lucky to hit on all the conditions it really likes because its leaves are getting bigger and bigger. Each one is so unique and stunning. I do baby the heck out of it. It grows in LECA, gets distilled water + nutrients, lives in my IKEA cabinet. I'm a little scared when it outgrows the cabinet because it won't have such perfect conditions. Growing alocasias in semi-hydro does seem to be a winning formula. The roots grow like crazy and the leaves are perfection.
Yes!! It's been a game changer for me and I underwater a lot more now than I used to so it really is a great substrate for certain plants of mine. I'm so happy to hear your frydek is growing well! 🥰

But since pon is always sold out I've been experimenting with adding amendments to my used pon. I've been adding extra pumice and even tree fern to try and stretch it. I have even been trying just pumice and tree fern as an amendment for my hoyas in self watering pots. So we'll see. Looking forward to your pon video though.
Thank you! 🙏 My stump was pretty already when I put it in pon after it died back. The new leaves that came back in were already big which surprised me! It'll get there though it just takes some time to mature a bit. Lechuza has definitely be slow to restock 😢
Great video, thanks Melissa. I am going to go and watch your PON video. May I ask what those white label things are which are hanging from your plants? I wondered if you kept beneficial bugs in it or something. Thank you!!!
stratum is good for some time but you'll definitely want to move it out after a while. It starts to break down and becomes muddy and really hard to keep watered once the plant gets rooted in there.
Thank you! It actually turned out better the third time haha. The first time my camera shut off and I lost it. The second time my mic was off 😩 but at least it was a talking video!
I LOVE my Alocasia Micholitziana! I have her in pon but she’s nothing like yours. Sounds like I need to use some liquid fertilizer…which one is your favorite to use on her?
Love your alocasia collection ❤ I have recently started growing a couple of variegated frydeks and they are in pon. I was unsure if I should be planting them so the bulbous area above roots is completely covered or if you should leave the top part exposed?
Thank you!! I honestly just plant them in there and I don't even pay attention to that haha. I tend to leave some of the stem out and they'll shoot new roots out where it meets the pon on the top layer.
Any tips to get a juvenile variegated to size up? I've had mine for a year, water and fertilize regularly and give it great light and it is still small 🤕
@@plantsbymelissa With every watering, I use diluted Superthrive foliage pro. It's in a tiny pot right now, one it came in. I think i will size up just a little! Chunky soil, my other alocasias are doing well in the soil I have so I think I'll stick with that
I feed mine at the production dose at the 1 tsp per gallon every week and that seems to be enough nutrients right now. It might not be up taking nutrients appropriately if you’re feeding at that dose and it’s still not growing in good light. I think an upsize should help if it’s in a tiny pot 🫶🏻
I grow my varigated Frydek in pon close an East facing window and it seems to enjoy it, the only issue is that the leaves won't turn white. It has really nice varigation but the leaves are only bright green. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
It could possibly be the genetics of your particular plant. Have you tried growing out a corm from it to see if the variegation differs? You could also try more light depending on how much light your current spot gets to see if it brings out more variegation.
They can in certain conditions! It stays pretty warm in my plant room year round and they get grow lights as well so that keeps them happy enough during the winter time. Here where I live it can get cold but not too much of a drastic change inside.
I bought mine a while ago! I stocked up last time and bought like 4 big bags. I hear it was back in stock today but I must have missed it because I don't see it available now.
The way I was doing it definitely caused issues but rainwater has nitrogen and is great water to use. I think mine just got contaminated so who knows what was in it 😭
I pretty much only use rain water for my plants and have no issues. I have a few barrels I collect in. I don’t have gutters so it’s basically run off from my roof and rainfall and my plants are perfectly happy. So don’t be discouraged, you can always start using it on a few plants and see how that goes instead of on your whole collection. Also would recommend that your barrels have lids to store so you don’t get mosquitoes. I actually drop in a mosquito dunk when collecting and once full there shouldn’t be any problems with lids on the barrels.
@@plantsbymelissaAll you have to do is boil any water to remove contaminants and trace minerals i.e. in tap water, rain water (which is usually good but depends on how it's collected).
I grow a good part of my collection is semi hydro, specifically Alocasia because I love it and it’s allowed me to grow certain plants I couldn’t before 👍🏼

What is it currently planted it and when you say fertilize regularly how often is that? 😁
You could also try more light depending on how much light your current spot gets to see if it brings out more variegation.
really nice video
Thank you!! 🙏
How do you flush?
Do your alocascia go dormant in winter? Here in Australia in winter they sometimes do😢
They can in certain conditions! It stays pretty warm in my plant room year round and they get grow lights as well so that keeps them happy enough during the winter time. Here where I live it can get cold but not too much of a drastic change inside.
What liquid fertilizer do you use for them? Sorry if you said it and I missed it. My toddler is so loud and I can barely hear you lol
I use foliage pro, silica and cal mag.
How do you still get your hands on Pon?
I bought mine a while ago! I stocked up last time and bought like 4 big bags. I hear it was back in stock today but I must have missed it because I don't see it available now.
❤
❤️❤️
I can’t keep more than 2 leaves on mine 😩
How often do you fertilize?
@@plantsbymelissa every 2-3 weeks. Should I do more often? I just use some cheap stuff. 😩

Hello Melissa 👋Please add Turkish subtitles to your videos.🙏
جديد معكم وسعيد معكم
NOOOOOO!!! Dont tell me this! I just started collecting rain water for my plants! Guest that wont be a thing!!
The way I was doing it definitely caused issues but rainwater has nitrogen and is great water to use. I think mine just got contaminated so who knows what was in it 😭
I’ve been using rain water from roof with no issues so far. The algae is becoming an issue since the start of warmer weather.
How do you still get your hands on Pon?@@plantsbymelissa
@@plantsbymelissaAll you have to do is boil any water to remove contaminants and trace minerals i.e. in tap water, rain water (which is usually good but depends on how it's collected).
great, another 20 min pon ad
I grow a good part of my collection is semi hydro, specifically Alocasia because I love it and it’s allowed me to grow certain plants I couldn’t before 👍🏼
15:35. Just talk a tad bit faster, lol. I watch you on 1.25x, otherwise it sounds like you’re talking in slow motion 😂
I bet that sounded a lot cooler in your head.
Yo haha I was wanting this plant and I was looking for your tutorial on how to make micholitziana a beautiful plant and... As soon as I entered UA-cam I see you with this. thanks Mel ❤️
