Pere Marquette 1225 returns to the North Pole Express in 2021 with a newcomer on the rear, LTEX 310, a former Amtrak F40PHR! This year on December 19th, 2021, I briefly following the last 10 AM run of the year through rural Michigan to the little village of Ashley. I hung around to see a bit of the town again, bought some Christmas ornaments, ate some food, saw Santa Claus give out the first gift of Christmas, and took some pictures of the train. Later in the afternoon, I then also followed the North Pole Express on its way back to Owosso. It was pretty cool seeing another operating former Amtrak F40 unit, my second one after Algoma Central 106 back in 2018. Regardless, here's some clips of 1225 and 310 making their runs with the North Pole Express and its rather varied rake of single and bi-level coaches from varying railroads. Thanks to the Steam Railroading Institute for putting on this event once again!

1225 is my favorite Berkshire and I'm glad to see it running again especially for the north pole express. I mean "One thing about trains, it doesn't matter where you're going, what matters is deciding.... to get on."
you wanna know something the polar express has made me hate 2-8-4 Berkshire type locomotives
@@IndustrialParrot2816 why?
@@adventuresofamtrakcascades301 i don't like the polar express
@@IndustrialParrot2816 might you explain a bit more?
@@DerpyPossum i just have developed a distain for it and i feel the same way about it that some people feel about thomas the tank engine
I love seeing those old retired Amtrak cars! Amazing to see the old El Capitan Bi-Levels! Very cool that they got the old Pacific Parlor cars too!
That particular Amtrack became an engine on Montreal commuter train line
@@daveyboy_ yea we had a good amount.
Those Pacific parlor cars used to be on Amtrak coast starlight
A classic steamer and an brilliant class of diesel, together on the same train
Amazing
:')
“One thing about trains, it doesn’t matter where you’re going, what matters is deciding, To get On.”
One of the best quotes I've heard.
Pere Marquette 1225 and an Amtrak F40PH. What a legendary combination of locomotives. I don't understand why they threw I the two Ann Arbor cabooses behind 1225. It throws off the passenger car consistency.
Well, it would a little weird if the passengers rode in a line of trucks wouldn't it
Crew quarters?
Probably caboose rides. We do the same thing at New Hope plus its at the head end of the consist just like what we do.
The F40PH was actually formerly owned by EXO, which is a commuter rail and bus service in Quebec, Canada
Probably for capacity reasons. There's a TON of people that want to ride the "Real Polar Express" (we're talking about an event where you have to reserve tickets almost a YEAR in advance), and the Steam Railroading Institute only has so many coaches. So they add more cars, add a new class for people that want that special experience, and they make more money off the event to keep it and the locomotive running.
Pere Marquette 1225 (The Polar Express engine) is a beautiful steam locomotive.
It’s my favorite American steam locomotive
@@magicguystudios7940 Me too.
@@nathancorcoran5347 How'd you get here?
@@atlantis0v-104 1225 lives in Owosso, Michigan.
Same, its a double for me as i loved the AMT f40phs and having both. Epic.
5:10 1225 in reverse sounds like a second-grade music class LOL
Awesome loco, excellent video!
1225 Is The Definition of Christmas Spirit
Poggers on having amt 310 in the video pic. I miss our good old screamers in montreal
Agreed
I came back here to watch this epic combo, the F40PH, my favorite diesel, and 1225, my favorite steamer, together? *HOW*
Very Cool I love The Pere mar1uette 1225 polar Express
Great video AmtrakGuy365, Great seeing 1225 running again for the Polar Express Excursions.
Love the whitewalls on the 1225.
With some exceptions, I think whitewalls look good on all big steam locomotives
I love seeing the Amtrak F40's soldiering on through their second or third careers, goes to show how resilliant they are. Awesome video!
Um, that’s actually a former EXO F40PH, not an Amtrak one, also incase you don’t know what EXO is, it’s a commuter rail and bus service in Quebec, Canada
@@thundersonic342 um actually it operated on Amtrak and after it's career on Amtrak was bought by them :)
@@F40Productions it is true. I think one of the exo/Amtrak leaser locomotives out there originally belonged to go transit
@@mikeweston1582 yeah, 411 was origianlly GO 511
Nice! Love the ex Amtrak and Hi-levels! F40! Steam! Snow! Its all there!
OMG! That's the exact F40PH that was used by Agence Métropolitain Transport! It's still using it's livery design!
I'm surprised 310 don't say GLC on the side of the Locomotive cool horn.
LTEX #310 started off life as Amtrak #392. This is not the same road number as the one from its Amtrak days, as this locomotive was renumbered to Virginia Railway Express V31, and was sold to AMT in Montreal, being renumbered to 310. This unit is a former Amtrak/VRE F40PHR that’s being used for the North Pole Express, right?
Love the Horn On LTEX 310
What a motley crew of rolling stock running behind an iconic locomotive. Absolutely stunning!
Happy Holidays AmtrakGuy365
Wow, that F40phr really does need a new paint scheme.
The polar express lookalike;
Have a safe and merry Christmas 🎄
That F40PH is an ex Amtrak, ex Montreal AMT unit. Love the 1225!!
I love her new White Walls LMAO
"We've made it! And with 5 minutes to spare, We've made it!"
Woah nice! Nice getting a shot of it!
Ltex 310 has a nice horn 👍
Nice Video
Nice to see her running again
Nice video. One can never get enough of 1225!!
The 1225 is my third favorite locomotive she is the only engine on the Pere Marquette and she is the legend of legends of the rail
Hope everyone have a blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Mayor Fawbush of NASCAR Tri-Cities Racing Region Series
⛄🎄 Happy Holidays ⛄🎄
Yay it's Christmas time
Great shots! I think I was standing next to you at Ashley that morning. That's me at 3:54 in the grey jacket and beanie.
THE TRUE POLAR EXPRESS RUNS AGAIN!!!!!!!
I am happy that the Pacific Parlour cars are still with us, even if they're not on the Coast Starlight.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Spectacular winter steam action! Thank you for sharing (and potentially freezing your nose off while filming).
0:57 cool they used ltex 310 as the backup power
I drove two hours on 3 separate occasions to try to get a good picture of that damn f40. finally got one the other week
incredible shots! :)
11:56 This F40PH also served in MTL, I‘m pretty sure.
nice! i kinda wish i had stayed for the return trip too, yesterday.
Interesting to see a bit of Montréal in this video, the Ex-AMT F40PH as seen on 14:19.
After living by 1223 for so many years it would be nice to ride behind her sister! The only problem is getting the tickets since they usually sell out so fast...
You notice how 1225 represents the date of December 25th? (12/25)
i really want to see 1225 pulling 5 pullman cars that look like the ones from polar express. that would be so perfect
Awesome!
Nice catch
I can't be the only one who spotted the Ex-ATSF El-Capitan high levels in the consist.
The polar express
Oooh whitewalls
What i would do to see this beauty. In 2019 I rode a Amtrak Polar Express rip off. I was so disappointed on that day.
i remember when 310 was in Boston,MA on loan for the MBTA and the rest of their ex-amtrak fleet
Cool
I love it
yesssssss
Guys the f40 is from EXO amt
It's great to see her running again, but I'm not digging the white trim that's on the running board and drive wheels.
Note: That the LTEX ex Amtrak F40PH Paint Scheme was based on his Join Badge Logo in Blue
I think it would be cool if they put a Lima 5 chime whistle on 1225 at some point in time.
nice
They should buy and repaint the F40PH so it can be a running mate for 1225
Nice catch! Kinda odd hearing a K3LA on an F40PH though...
AmtrakGuy365, when will LTEX #310 return to LTEX?
It’s a big mess of a train, but that whistle…
If the Marysville railroad was real mr Melvin would lease out the loco for the North Pole express to happen
Hello amtrak guy 365.
I was their on the 19th to it was super cool I was riding in the first double decker coach small world I guess Edit: actually I was their on the 18th but still
I thought the camera rattles when the train stops and whistles kinda loud
That engine at the end - old Amtrack engine with the livery of the Montreal ( AMT ) commuter train . Who cares because damm what a whistle on that Steam engine
When will you make another Engines of New York Central video?
Can you make another video of Engines of New York Central?
What would u have done if it was Berkshire 1220
AmtrakGuy365, why was LTEX #310 on that train?
To be a pusher locomotive
To pull the train back to Owosso, since there is no where to turn 1225.
I know this is a stupid question but it’s one I’ve had on my mind for a while. (In general, not based on this video)
Why do steam trains usually have a diesel pushing it from behind? Is a steam train too weak to pull the carriages or is the diesel a backup in case something happens to the steam engine?
both, kinda, I guess
There is nowhere to turn the steam engine around at Ashley. The diesel is just along for the ride northbound, and then it pulls the train back south to Owosso
I always heard that Steam engines had issues going backwards
Regardless of whether the steam loco can be turned around or run around, a diesel locomotive would be required for Head End Power (electricity for the coaches). In the days of steam, coaches were heated and powered by a line of steam diverted from the engine. But since steam locomotives are not common anymore, most historical coaches have been converted to run on electricity. The F40 (and all passenger diesel locomotives) has a generator on its engine to generate Head End Power for coaches.
@@daveyboy_ steam locomotives technically work just as well in reverse as forward, the problem is that some of them have a tender which would block the vision of the operators while in reverse. Some steam locomotives are designed to provide good visibility in reverse by using a "tank engine" configuration or by making the tender narrower than the cab.
