Our dear pet chipmunk Luna ("Poopsie"), who you see pictured in this video, passed away this past Sunday, 2/23/20. He lived for a full decade, which is phenomenal for a chipmunk, and he died peacefully in his sleep with a tummy full of avocado, nice and warm deep inside his bed. He will continue to bring us joy with these memories, and thanks to all who commented and appreciated his cuteness.
A full decade?!! WOW!! Amazing! That was ONE OLD HAPPY CHIPMUNK!! You must have taken excellent care! The sad part to having a pet so long is the good-bye. Sorry for your loss. BTW - with such a cute pet, you have to talk "baby talk"; there's no other way.
What a cute video and what a cutie!! I always wished for a chipmunk as a pet but I thought they were wild. This weekend while visiting my uncle I got to be close to the chipmunk living under his deck!!! She actually came to me for almonds. It was soooooo nice to see one so close and feel her furry little body :)
Hi TheMysnickers I am your 780th like and I feed chipmunks every day at the local park along with squirrels, pigeons and rabbits. Chipmunks are hilarious and adorable.

He is still our pet and eats healthy hummus every day, because it is difficult for him to chew hard foods in his old age. Thanks again for your comment!

I agree with what all you stated above,to people who think we are being cruel!!!! I am a huge animal lover,and my chipmunk was almost killed when I pulled it from a stray cat's mouth! My chippy has a cage,a wheel inside,and a ball to run in when I take him outside! He runs in my house,and prob has a better life than most! And what about dogs? Before man domesticated them,they were wild,and look what AWESOME pets they are! I LOVE the way your chippy wakes up! Thank you for sharing!
Adorable!! I want one! Unfortunately, so does my cat... lol (see video response). I've been putting out nuts and seeds for the neighborhood chipmunks for 10 years or so mostly because they entertain my cats so much, but secretly because they entertain me too. My first cat developed what I am convinced was a friendship with one of the chipmunks, who spent 5 years racing across my window ledge (not necessary to reach the food), often pausing to wait for my cat to lunge at the screen.
If you let the chipmunk out of it's cage, I don't see what some of these people are complaining about. I bet you if you asked the chipmunk (if it could talk) whether or not it wants to live in the wild living in fear of getting eaten by a hawk, snake, cat, or any other carnivores OR sleep in a cage with food and roam freely around a big house all day, I think the chipmunk would choose the latter. Though I believe in animal's natural habitats, there are tons of chipmunks. So people, CALM DOWN!
@TheMysnickers Glad you enjoyed the video. I remember seeing a video of a cat that had bonded with a mouse or a rat (I forget which) and they were adorable together. And of course, I've read countless stories about unexpected animal bonds. Love them all. I was really amazed to see how responsive your chipmunk was to you. Looked just like something my cat would do, yawning and stretching his paw towards you.
Are you asking me how does it feel to be cooped up inside all day? Because my chippy isn't cooped up ...he gets to run in and out of the house,and is so spoiled and happy! he actually does tricks for treats and everyone that comes over loves him and he doesn't bite and isn't aggressive.So he gets to be in the sunshine and nature too...we take him in the yard and to the park.....with our dogs
Eeehehehehhe! This reminds me of me in the morning! I have two pet rats and it's soo cute to see the similarities between them and a Chipmunk (we don't have them here in Australia D:) I love the little rodent stretch-and-yawn they seem to share! :D This has since become my instant cheer up video :D
These are not cage animals. They need their 30 foot burrow and exposure to all season weather as they go into semi hibernation. You can have a great bond with wild chipmunks . I feed and pet mine. They come when called and still enjoy a life in nature.

If you are sad that I keep a chipmunk as a pet, you must be sad that people keep any kind of animals as pets. What's the difference between a chipmunk and a dog, a cat and a hamster? Just the fact that these other animals were bred in human captivity? How do you know your dog or cat or hamster is absolutely happy?? We can't know things like this, but as pet owners we do our best to take care of our animals and give them better lives than they would have on their own in the wild.
@Nerfinator91 Some of my favorite cross-species moments are when cats and dogs (traditional enemies of course!) bond and curl up together...those are just adorable. Yes, she is such a calm animal - if you look for more chipmunk videos on youtube, you'll find that they are often quite spastic and fidgety. But ours is just an ocean of calm and sweetness! Although...I must confess that sometimes she does get hyper and charges around the living room!

Chipmunks as far as I know are pretty rare as pets in the USA, where I am from, although it is my understanding that they are popular in England and some Asian countries. Mine was caught wild, but quickly became tame in a matter of weeks. We take loving care of her, give her a healthy diet and plenty of room to exercise, and now she comes to our hand when called! She is truly a member of the family. :)

@mintygin Dear Rogelio, thank you so much for your comment. You can certainly keep a chipmunk as a pet, and you can get one either from a breeder, or from the wild. But you must do a lot of reading, to educate yourself on how to take care of them and give them a happy life. They require a lot of space, a healthy, varied diet, and extra love and patience as they are much more energetic and fragile than an ordinary small pet! -Mysnickers

@TheMysnickers Yes, I agree. That's why I'd be afraid to have a pet chipmunk and a cat at the same time. Even if they are the best of friends, there's always that risk that the feline hunting instinct might take over. I figure I've got the best of both worlds as I get to enjoy watching them play with little worry of anyone getting hurt.
@mintygin Your story reminds me of my friend's father, Rastapopoulos (name changed), who used to wake my friend up by coming into his room at 7:00 am and yelling, "It's 8:30 - we're late for school!!!" And then when my friend jumped out of bed with his heart racing and got ready really quick, he would find Rastapopoulos sitting in the kitchen sipping coffee, snickering. To some that might be funny, but to me, it crosses the line. What do you think?

Animal videos are great! You'll love a video that I have on my page. I filmed a dog, cat and mouse who all have grown up together and live with each other in harmony. They sleep snuggled with one another. It's super sweet.

But I like to tell you that you bring me a smile each morning, I yawn just like the chipmunk and I think that today will not be such a bad day. @Nerfinator91 They are totally playing! Both cats and chipmunks are savvy thinkers, there's no doubt about it. They will play and tease each other, as long as they have food and a warm home to return to. Although, I would never let a cat near my chipmunk, unless perhaps if they were raised together. I see that scenario much like I see tigers and their trainers - they often love each other, but sometimes the tiger plays too rough and the trainer gets injured, totally unintentionally.

@Nerfinator91 I love your video!! This is wonderful interplay between a house pet and a wild animal. It's fascinating, that sometimes animals who would naturally be predator/prey form a bond! There are some excellent examples of this to be found, if you spend a little time searching UA-cam. It's my hypothesis that animals who have their needs met, e.g. shelter and food, begin to look for friendship next. :) Thank you for sharing.
@kenya1987 That is very sad indeed. If I had met you before the summer began, I would have suggested you use live traps to rid yourself of unwanted animals. I have successfully removed mice from my property with live traps, and it feels great to release them alive and unharmed back into the wild. But perhaps your situation offered no alternative. Either way, if you knew how much love could come from one little chipmunk, I am sure you would have explored alternate means.
@mintygin Dear mintygin, I am sorry to hear that you have been working a lot, although in this day and age, that could also be read as good news. But yes, our chipmunk lives a very enviable life. And - she works hard too - on the hamster wheel, opening acorns, scratching on the couch - clearly a different paradigm, yet work all the same. Our lives are more similar than we think!

Hi! We captured him as a baby in our backyard with a simple bucket trap, kind of like how Wile E. Coyote would try to catch Roadrunner! :) We didn't know if we would keep him, but after having him for a couple of days and seeing how happy he was in our house, we decided he could stay. He's lived with us for 4 years now!!
TheMysnickers ever think about getting him a bigger cage?? Thats pretty tiny for a wild chipmunk who was used to running free. Thats like a gerbil or hamster cage were those animals are more mellow but chipmunks have alot of energy. I could be wrong but on the video the cage seemed tiny.

I love your question, because I am very happy to say that Luna is doing GREAT! He is 7 years old now! He's a little slower on the wheel and has lost some strength in his legs, but he is basically 90% of the young chipmunk you see in the video. It's really amazing how well he is doing...he is such a great pet. Anyway...thank you for asking! :)
Sad, that you keep it as a pet. You probably let him run around inside your house, and take care of your chipmunk... but what I do not understand is that when you love animals, why would you keep an animal like a chipmunk as a pet!?! We have 2 chipmunks that live in our backyard. I definitely want them to keep their freedom but I also want to keep them safe and healthy. Any advice?

@Nerfinator91 I love your video!! This is wonderful interplay between a house pet and a wild animal. It's fascinating, that sometimes animals who would naturally be predator/prey form a bond! There are some excellent examples of this to be found, if you spend a little time searching UA-cam. It's my hypothesis that animals who have their needs met, e.g. shelter and food, begin to look for friendship next. :) Thank you for sharing.

@kenya1987 That is very sad indeed. If I had met you before the summer began, I would have suggested you use live traps to rid yourself of unwanted animals. I have successfully removed mice from my property with live traps, and it feels great to release them alive and unharmed back into the wild. But perhaps your situation offered no alternative. Either way, if you knew how much love could come from one little chipmunk, I am sure you would have explored alternate means.

@mintygin Dear mintygin, I am sorry to hear that you have been working a lot, although in this day and age, that could also be read as good news. But yes, our chipmunk lives a very enviable life. And - she works hard too - on the hamster wheel, opening acorns, scratching on the couch - clearly a different paradigm, yet work all the same. Our lives are more similar than we think!

Hi! We captured him as a baby in our backyard with a simple bucket trap, kind of like how Wile E. Coyote would try to catch Roadrunner! :) We didn't know if we would keep him, but after having him for a couple of days and seeing how happy he was in our house, we decided he could stay. He's lived with us for 4 years now!!

TheMysnickers ever think about getting him a bigger cage?? Thats pretty tiny for a wild chipmunk who was used to running free. Thats like a gerbil or hamster cage were those animals are more mellow but chipmunks have alot of energy. I could be wrong but on the video the cage seemed tiny.

Sure, we let him run around our house all the time! Sometimes he disappears for an hour or two (probably to take a nap!), but he always comes back.

I love your question, because I am very happy to say that Luna is doing GREAT! He is 7 years old now! He's a little slower on the wheel and has lost some strength in his legs, but he is basically 90% of the young chipmunk you see in the video. It's really amazing how well he is doing...he is such a great pet. Anyway...thank you for asking! :)

Sad, that you keep it as a pet. You probably let him run around inside your house, and take care of your chipmunk... but what I do not understand is that when you love animals, why would you keep an animal like a chipmunk as a pet!?! He makes you happy because he's cute... but do you think he's absolutely happy inside a house...
