      I colony breed, but it really depends on your situation.

    • @theirishman8455
      @theirishman8455 6 років тому

      I have a 60 (65?) gallon community aquarium with a small assortment with plenty of room to grow. I did rescue 2 overly harassed females that thought her births were simply new plates brought out for the all-you-eat buffet. So I ended up with 3 fry leftover in a breeder box, and decided to keep the group. Basically, if more females are harassed to the brink of death, I don’t plan on keeping the plastic separated in place. I really don’t want 50 platy in my aquarium, have no small mom n’ pop store anywhere nearby. So, nature will therefore take it’s course. NOW: lmao, what’s a good grow out environment for them? Right now they’re in a small plastic critter carrier with a bubbler and a bit of small plastic plant to hide in for comfort. I know the ammonia levels will slowly rise without filtration and a water change will be on the plate, but with fry less than half the size of a tadpole, that’s gonna suck.......The End.

    I don’t quite understand the white on the tail. Thought that indicates that the tail was still growing but he thinks it’s an indicator of water quality. Now this may just be in his room. Have you experienced this as well Michael?

    • @DGrey
      @DGrey 6 років тому +1

      I think there are 2 kinds of white on the tail. 1 that indicates more growth and the other is like a fringey white, possibly fungus starting, that is from water quality dropping. I think the blood flow that the males need to get to the end of their tail is not functioning as well as it should at that point. The tail degrades rapidly after that.

      I'm sorry to hear that a disability stops you from keeping fish. It sounds like you acquired a lot of knowledge from those interviews. I met all those guys at ifga shows and was sorry when Luke passed away and recently Stan. Great ambassadors for the hobby. Luke brought in tons of fish and knowledge from his overseas contacts. If you ever want to share some knowledge about genetics I'd love it. greydmail at yahoo.com

    When breeding a stain is it important to separate the fry from the breeding tank or can you grow the fry out in the same tank?

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  6 років тому +1

      If you are looking for specific traits in the STRAIN, you should separate them.

      I’m good. Been busy with the baby. But I’ve been getting back into building fish stuff. Just built a water change system thingy for some of my classroom tanks. As I’m getting a little bit more time and energy I’ve been putting it into fish stuff, will eventually come back to UA-cam when things settle more. I’m mostly focusing on guppies again, plecos, and a few other tanks for fun.

    As I understand it, these are the meanings of the names for guppy patterns:
    Snakeskin = Fine pattern of wavy lines on body, usually metallic
    Cobra = Vertical bars on the body, may or may not also have a snakeskin pattern
    (There's also an extreme form of snakeskin that is basically a bunch of small dots, but AFAIK, it doesn't have a name)
    Mosaic = Coarse pattern of wavy stripes on fins
    Lace = Fine pattern of wavy stripes on fins
    Leopard = Round spots on fins (may have smear-like spots, but not joined into stripes like mosaics)
    Galaxy = Strain name that went viral; not associated with a particular gene. Usually refers to guppies with both snakeskin and lace patterns that are not red or yellow.

      @MichaelsFishRoom  5 років тому

      Depends on what you read! Lol
      Also I think in Europe they call the same names with different meanings.

      Hi Bernhard. There are articles on it online. It was initially thought to be a columnaris type disease. Guppies returning from shows normally are weaker at first but this affected people's entire fish rooms. Could have been air-born disease. guppiesbystanshubel.netfirms.com/Fighting%20Guppy%20Disease.htm

      hey michael i just wana ask you if you put salt into your pleco tank during a water change? i kinda pick up that habit from watching some lfs doing it for killing harmful disease for our fishes. Do you do it? Thanks for answering. 😊

    Sure that a breeder here in Asia once told me that they call it ‘grass’ because the pattern on the tail is reminiscent of grass seed. Doesn’t make much sense to me either, but hey-ho...
