Hey Ted, glad to hear you are feeling better.
Hey, I guessed right! Thank you, Ted, it's a beautiful piece! I'm so glad you are feeling better! 😃
That's absolutely beautiful Phil!!! I have never had an opportunity to turn Mesquite maybe one day !Happy wood turning to you from Ducklake Maine!!!👍
That's a very beautiful piece. I never realized mesquite was such a cool looking wood; my only exposure to it is in pellet form in my smoker. Thanks for sharing!
@@michaelblainejones Oh you’re very welcome. Thanks for your comment. Ted
Hi 👋, Phil, From the COOL Dude 😂, I hope you and your family and friends had a great Christmas, 🎅, another piece of mesquite, wood, turning sculpture, ART , truly amazing grain, that shellac definitely brings out the grain, I/We look 👀 forward to seeing you next year carry on with your audition of creating pieces of art, I take this opportunity to wish you and your family and friends. Happy New Year,🥳 ,
Phil from the Moulin Rouge 💃🏻🍷, France .
Thank you very much, Phil! I wish the same for you! 😃
Hi Phil,
What a real beauty this is. Gotta love Mesquite.
Sorry for the short comment to start with. I was somewhere that I could not watch with sound but home now and watched it again. So much better to hear it with the sound of the gouge but even better your voice talking to the piece and us at the same time. Cool turning my friend,
Gary
Thank you, buddy! Please take good care of yourself, my friend! I like hearing your voice, too! 😃
Beautiful work Phil. You always do a great job of balancing the craftsmanship you put into a piece while maintaining its natural beauty. You never over work a piece. Love this creation, great job.
Thank you, Jaydee! 😊
Pretty sure its mesquite. It can very from light brown to dark brown with red to purple ive found.
😃
You were right, Phil. It IS pretty dang nice! That mesquite sure is beautiful wood! I’m glad you left the tall parts on too-I really like that wavy rim! I look forward to seeing what you have in store for the 2nd piece 😊 Happy New Year! 🎉
Thank you, Marcia! 😃
You were right, Phil, it is beautiful. Great job of turning, buddy! Looking forward to next week.
Take care,
.....Gord
Thank you, my friend! 😊 May the new year bring you good health and good times!
Smashing looking piece, gorgeous grain too. Glad you left the high sides, I'm guessing you heard us shouting in unison haha
Yup, you all sounded off just beautifully and loudly! 😃
The grain on this piece is outstandingly beautiful. I think it's one of the prettiest pieces you've done. You normally make beautiful pieces.
Thank you very much, Judith! 😃
Thank You Phil, Thank You Ted Helvig, Thank You Darren Helvig...Mesquite sounds right but whatever it is Phil I would like to see you receive a whole truckload of that beautiful wood!!!...I will be looking forward to you turning the other half. Until next Thursday..
TM
Yeah, it's some beautiful wood for sure, Tuffy! A truckload sounds good to me! LOL! Thank you, my friend! 😃
fabulous job Phil. I love to watch you turning especially when you get the speed up. As a spindle turner my average speed was about 3000rpm. Happy New Year 2024. All the best to you Phil. Rod from London England
Thanks, Rod! Yup, it's rare and a real pleasure to get to turn at higher speeds! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil it's a mystery to me what the wood is but the end result is just amazing beautiful colours and grains. Thanks Phil have a great new year see you in 2024.
Thank you, John! 😃
Phil. I'm going to use your words pretty dang beautiful. You ended 2023 with a bowl that's dang dang beautiful. Happy New Year Phil
Haha, thank you, Kim! 😃
Wonderful grain!!! Always nice to find another wood with incredible grain and color.
And yes, I was one of the voices to keep the wood sticking up. : )
The finished bowl is 'yummy/wow'
Thank you.
Thank you very much, Chuck! 😊
Wow, beautiful is right, Phil. That would look just right on any mantel. Keep them coming....Dan.
Thanks, Dan! 😃
That really is stunning Phil. Definitely Kiawé wood… (Mesquite on the mainland) Beautiful grain and more often used in smokers than art pieces, but I’ve made a few walking sticks out of Kiawé and people would ask what kind of wood it was? When I told them it was Kiawé, they’d frown, “The wood we use in Imu and Smokers? Wow! It’s way too beautiful to burn! I feel bad now!” 😅
Well they do that with Mesquite on the mainland as well. The bowl turned out awesome Phil!
Aloha from Washington State 🤙🏼
Interesting, Sean, thanks! Howdy from Washington state, too! 😃
Phil,
Another piece of gorgeous! Thank you. I’m all smiles and that’s the only way to be after a maker’s video 😋.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Good to know, Paul, thank you! 😃
Extremely nice piece of work, beautiful wood. HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALABAMA PHIL AN ALL OTHERS OUT THERE.
Thanks, Bobby! 😃
Yup, you're right. It's a beauty. One question, Phil. Did you consider turning a vase from the original uncut piece? Thanks, Phil.
Yes I did, Kersi. 😃
HMMM...I didn't get notified of this video. UA-cam may be messing with you, be careful. If your likes go down, this may be why.
YT is always messing with me, I give up on that part, Morgan! 😃
Howdy Phil!! Great Job on that piece! I'm glad you listened to us and kept the two high points. Be Safe and stay healthy! If you don't make another video this year, then Happy New Year!! I look forward to many videos in 2024!! Feeling totally cool as your subscriber!
Groovy, thank you, Robert! 😃
Hey Phil, I'm with you on that being mesquite. I live in Central Texas, work with mesquite occasionally and have turned some of it as well.
I appreciate and enjoy your videos. Needless to say I've learned a lot from you, Thanks again, Rick
Thanks a lot, Rick! 😃
As usual Uncle Phil... Beautiful work of art. I was so excited at 8:45 mark on the video.. we watched it today, late as usual for us😂. At the time mark, right where your thumb was, was the face of either a bear or a dog!! So cute.. but you didn't hear me today when I said don't do it!! But we were late and you did 6 days ago😂😂😂. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and new years eve. So good to start the video year with you that's for sure. Here's to us all having a good 2024.. Ron & Patty
Thank you Ron and Patty! 😊
it is mesquite. Looks beautiful as it always does. Hats off again. You have a nack to make small things come to life.. KEEP ON TURNING
Thank you very much! 😊
What a grand piece to finish 2023 with, some lovely markings and grain in there. The live edge certainly brings out the shape as well. Wishing you Happy New Year from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks, Gary, Happy New Year! 😊
Hi Phil. I have been away from the lathe and videos for about 6 months due to a move. Everything in storage but now coming back to life. Left the same message for Gary yesterday as both of you are favourites turners of mine and of course I am regular viewer and subscriber. Should be up and running by mid - Jan. Just wanted to say "Hi" and wish you a happy new year as I look forward to watching your tutorials in the near future. Happy New Year, Regards Dennis
Welcome back, Dennis! I can't imagine moving. Nope, never gonna happen. Thank you! 😃
Yep, beautiful desert mesquite. I have a hunk of "Cat's Claw" desert wood. It may be too hard to turn; any ideas from viewers? Beautiful turning Phil.
I have turned enough hard woods to believe, no wood is too hard to turn. It might be a pain, but it's possible. Thank you! 😃
I do like the girthy pieces with more natural surfaces... Like the recent one you felt you ruined... I loved it!!! And I like this one also! Thanx again for sharing! Preciate you ✌😎👍
Thank you so much! 😃
I asked Santa for some Seal Coat and he delivered. Then my wife gave my list to her daughter and they gave me another can of it. I still have 1/3 of a can I bought. BTW, ACE Hardware is the only store in my area that carries it. The orange, blue and green box stores don’t carry it. Time to get turning……
Yeah, I have to order on Amazon now. 😃
Wow the color light and dark the gain it has it all. This is a wonderful project. I’m glad you kept the high points. One thing I noticed with Mesquite is how dusty it is as you turned it. Glad you wear a mask as you turn. Love this bowl Phil.
Thanks for the show.
Joel
Yeah, the grain is so tight it's hard to get shavings, mostly just dust. The mask helps! Thanks, Joel! 😃
That's beautiful Phil! Great project to end the year with! I hope you had a blessed and joyful Christmas. Have a happy and safe New Year ... seeya next year!
Thank you, Joseph! 😃
I really like this turning! I am so glad you listened and left the two high points. They are a big part of the beauty.
😃
Hi Phil this bowl has everything going for it colour, wonderful grain, the light and dark edges. It was magnificent and unique you are a masterwoodturner. Amanda xx
Thank you, Amanda! 😊 Cheers!
Beautiful piece! Thanks for a a delightful 2023, and wishing you a fabulous 2024! 🎆🎇
Thank you, Vicki and the same wish for you! 😃
Hi Phil, I'm away seeing family in my RV over Christmas, I just popped in to watch this beautiful piece, it's truly lovely thank you. Graham UK
Ahhh, love a good RV road trip, Graham. Thank you and enjoy! 😃
This is a masterpiece, done by a master. Thank you so much. Bought myself a record lathe yesterday. You really inspires me. Watch your videos till late. My wife also adores your work. Keep up the neat products!
Great to hear! I'm sure you will enjoy your new lathe! 😊
Maybe it's mesquite, but it doesn't look like mesquite, it looks more like chinaberry. I had a chinaberry tree in my front yard here in Vegas but it died and I replaced it with a mesquite tree. I had saved a log and for fun I milled up a couple of boards. Don't know what happened to them. Of course I started my comment when you started turning and before you put finish on it Now it looks more like mesquite. Dale in Las Vegas
Mesquite it is! Thanks, Dale! 😃
The piece is very, very nice looking. It's a wonderful piece of mosquite. I love the fact that you got the wings on. I can't change anymore, but rather than it's beautiful. Also where would I go to look at some of the pieces You have possibly for sale.
Thank you, Jodi! 😊 Unfortunately, I can't sell my work. No time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper.
I watch your vidieos
mostly to see how most of turnings will be mountedand what beauty you willsqueez out of blank. You do fantastic art pieces. Keep n keepin on. Thank you from Mitch K.
Cool, thanks, Mitch! 😃
When a beautiful pice is made like this. I can't help but think how many beautiful projects are burt so we can eat steak or stay warm. Another amazing job. Thanks for taking us along 👍.
So true! 😃
Hi Phil, there is nothing wrong with Mesquite wood. Thank you so much for your videos! Blessings from Texas. Hank
😃
Beautiful piece Phil; keeping those peaks was the right thing to do. If you had removed them, you'd have had to remove all of the edge because it just wouldn't look right. If I were a betting man, I would put money on this being mesquite. We don't have a lot of trees here in the desert in Arizona, but mesquite and ironwood are among those that we do have. I have several pieces I've turned from downed mesquite and it has the same figure and colors for the heartwood and sapwood. In my opinion, mesquite is a highly under-rated wood; it has such stunning grain and figure. That second piece should be awesome, it looks like it might have some burl in it. I was recently gifted a very large ironwood root stump; it's going to have to season for a while, but I'm really looking forward to getting to turn it. Let me know if you'd like a piece of it and we can figure something out.
I know you don't have many kinds of wood to choose from but, at least you have the best! Enjoy, Mark! 😃
Yes to it being mesquite. Nice outcome too.
Did you regrind the diamond point from another tool? What was it made from, if yes. If no, where? Haven't found one from any of the usual suspects.
Thanks, James! I did not regrind it. They are hard to find, singly. You will usually find them in a set of beginners tool. 😃
Absolutely Beautiful...I wanna find some myself lol...Great work as always Phil
I hope you do! 😊
Beautiful Phil! Not at all what I thought it would end up looking like. Great save on the pointy parts! Very cool is right! Cheers, Rick
Thank you, Rick! 😃 Cheers!
Probably Mesguite but who cares. It is so beautiful it doesn't matter.
I love the character of the top edge. Just a gorgeous piece of art to behold!
Thanks Phil!
Thank you, Bob! 😃
It definitely looks like mesquite to me. Love what you’ve been doing! Keep up the great work and Happy New Year! ❤️
Happy new year and thank you! 😊
I’ve got a friend who managed to find a couple of mesquite boards large enough for a bass fretboard. Wouldn’t mind finding a few of those myself. Beautiful wood.
That would be cool! 😃
Another outstanding Piece of art! I love watching your videos of bowl turnings, as I also have a UA-cam Channel with lots of mistakes as my channel is about 3 months, since I started. I am learning from you as well as other channels. Thanks for Your Help. Happy New Year!
Cool, thanks! 😊
What a beautiful way to end the old year and bring in the new. Awesome workmanship. Have a blessed and joyful New Year.
Thank you, Phyllis and the same for you! 😊
Spectacular grain in that mesquite another wonderful job I am also glad you left the hi points . Happy New Year Phil
Thank you, Mike! 😃
Beautiful wood and an added bonus Phil if you mess up a project. I think mesquite is one of the best woods for smoking meat. Nothing is wasted. I smoke a roast when I can get mesquite to do it. Love your work!
Thank you, Steve! 😊
I've turned a good bit of mesquite, it's one of my favorite woods to turn. I call it Texas walnut because of the color. I think it has a more interesting grain than black walnut. Although it's hard to tell on a video, I'd guess that as mesquite as well. It doesn't seem to be quite as dark as what I usually get my hands on but there's something like 7 or 8 varieties of mesquite.
😊
I wonder how long God had that bowl hiding in there, just waiting for you to come along and uncover it. All I can say is that between the two of you, that is one gorgeous piece of wood! Great job Phil, I love it. Rick
Thanks, Rick! I'm having a hard time holding off on turning the other half of this! 😊
That has some of the most beautiful grain I've ever seen and you found it inside that dry old hunk of wood. I will never BBQ with it again and not think of what it could have been. Again job well done just fantastic .
Stay safe and well.
Dennis
Right on, Dennis! Maybe it will make the meat taste even better or, at least look great! 😊
Très joli. Very pretty. ....Well, I think I need to fast for a week now. The turkey dressing was delicious. Not used to the no-snow in late December. Trèz weird.
Warm here too, Red! Got a new bike coming, hope it holds so I can do some riding! 😃
Superb , and we were definitely correct to tell you to leave those high points alone !
And what a grain and finish ! Love all those swirling bronzes and golds . I've got some similar wood , some type of Far East Teak imported as a table base , an old root . Has a similar swirling wood but with reds as well .
Pleasure to watch and listen as always . 😊
Awesome, thank you, Jim! 😊
Mesquite is a beautiful wood. Furniture from it is rare and very expensive. The grounds keeper cut down a dead mesquite from the common area and residents were waiting for him to cut it up so they could get a piece. The only thing e threw way were the branches. Tat is an absolutely beautiful bowl. You have an eye for detail.
Thank you! 😃
That beautiful piece of wood is why I love watching you make art. Yes it is a beauty. Thank you, from Mavourneen
Thank you, Mavourneen! 😃
Just awesome Phil 🤩 He has blessed you all the days of your life and us too! Love this piece especially 😍 looking forward to the next awesome piece 🤩
Thank you, David! 😊
What a beautiful character piece Phil. Isnt Mesquite also used for smoking meat or fish? Maybe you can use the shavings for tha.
Yeah, I guess that would work great, Stephanie! 😊
That is an amazing piece, live edge and grain, high points are great, I love the idea of including an original piece of the wood in the bowl.
All the best to you Phil.
Regards Jim
Cool, thank you, Jim! 😊
Definitely a beauty, Phil. I'm also glad you heard me (among others) saying to leave those wings.
Bill
You were loud and clear, Bill! 😃
When you just pause for a second and shout "Mesquite" is like me when I'll be wracking my brain trying to think of a character's name or an actor's name and think of it just a few minutes later and just shout it out
Yup, exactly like that! LOL!
Another fine Phil art piece "for all to enjoy"! Thanks, Phil, and Happy New Year!!
Thank you, Peter! 😃
Oh my, now that's a bit special Phil. Isn't the grain gorgeous? I could look at it for hours finding all the faces in the different angles of the edges. Can't wait to see it's other half.👍
I'm looking forward to the second half too, Jude! 😊
Happy New Year...outstanding grain on that one....high points are truly high points on that one's looks...
😃
Happy you left the high edges. Just beautiful gratin. I'll be back home in two weeks to watch you live.
Thank you, Russ! 😃
21:08 Yes 😊 very nice grai and color, nice finish also.
You are the person that I watched and when I retired I bought a wood lathe.
Thank you so much for inspiring me to get into the world of woodturning 😊
That is awesome, Bruno! 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wish you a great new year.
Thank you, Robin! You too! 😊
I agree with you that this turning is beautiful. My oh my it turned out really great. Thanks so very much. I don’t miss any of your turning videos.
You are so welcome, thanks for watching, Doug! 😊
Great looking piece Phil! Very beautiful. Thx and take care. Happy New Year
Happy new year! 😊
Phil, what do you do with all of your turnings? Thought of doing a giveaway with your subscribers?
For now I collect them. 😃 Can't do a giveaway for the same reason I can't sell them. Just no time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper.
What fantastic grain, and a great final result! Being from the other side of the pond I wouldn’t presume to comment on the species, so I’ll go along with you on that!
Thanks, John! 😃
That’s another beauty Phil.
Do you ever sell any of your creations? I for one would love to own something you had made. 😊
Thank you, Mandy! 😃 I wish I could sell some of my work. There just isn't time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper.
Awesome bowl. Is amazing to watch you work. Keep up the super duper videos. 👽
I'm on it, thanks! 😃
Love the grain. I was one of the voices calling for leaving the high sides😊 good job. Thanks Phil. Dan
Heard you loud and clear, Dan! 😊
Howdy Phil 👋👋 Happy New Year sir. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
Happy new year! 😃
I see Ted identified it but it reminded me of the snowdrop trees we have around campus where I work. They have a hundred tiny burns up and down the trunk. They look really fun to play with.
It was fun to play with, Archie! LOL!
Phil
Nice work .
Mesquite is fun to work with.
Beautiful bowl!
John
Thank you, John! 😃
I don't know what type of wood it is but I will tell you this it is absolutely gorgeous Phil nice turning for the end of 2023 can't wait to see what you turn in 2024 Blessing and Happy New Year
Thank you, Happy Happy! 😃
Yup, I was saying “thinner”. 🤣 But you would have lost some valuable wood if you did. This wood has enough character to pull off the thicker wall very nicely. When you said “no”, my brain said “Call it Chunky Monkey Banana Bowl”. Perfect to put bananas in. Mesquite (black locust) or Acacia (honey locust)? My honey locust is covered with little burls like that, but I do not know if Mesquite does the same. Yellow sap wood would make me think honey locust, but I am no expert. Did you use UV to check for glow in dark? But if Ted says Mesquite, I will not argue! Happy next trip around the Sun!
I wasn't aware of the UV light, thing, Valerie. I'll have to get one! 😊
UV light also used to set UV resin. Great for crack fill since it does not set until you apply UV light or sunlight. Can mix in coffee, sawdust or color. Not fussy like two part resin or epoxy. And does not fail in a couple years like CA glue can.
Beautiful piece of art, love the Mesquite. Thanks for sharing Phil. Have a very Happy New Year 🎈🎊🎆 ❤
Happy New Year, Maddie!! 😃
Another beautiful piece! So glad you left the wings!
Happy New Year
😃
Lovely bowl. If I was younger and in better health, I would definitely take up woodturning. 🪵 Wishing you and your family a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. 🎉
Thank you, Marcia and the same for you! 😃
Another beautiful bowl. I have learned a lot from watching your videos.
I'm so glad, Chris, thank you! 😊
Beautiful as always Phil...
It's funny how you talk as if your live talking with other's in the room...lolol
Listen also belated Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 and now Happy New Year to you also Phil...
May this year bring better things...
I'm still dealing with my cancer and very tired and depressed alot...best regards always...
Thank you, Robin! Please try not to be depressed. You may know, I've been there, too. Whenever I felt down, I told myself, "yeah, I feel like crap but at least the docs have this technology that is going to make me feel better, one day." Today is one of those days! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop yeah I know Phil... bless you guy... keep up the great work...it makes me feel better...best...
Amazing piece Phil. Happy Holidays from Cape Town.
😃
Mesquite, maybe. Mystique, maybe. The finish made the grain pop!
😃
Beautiful as always!! Just curious, what do you do with your projects when they are finished.
I just collect them for now, Steve. 😃
One way to know if it's mesquite is while you're turning it and the smell makes you hungry for BBQ😊
LOL!
Thanks for sharing your decision making. It helps a lot to understand how you get such great results.
I'm glad it's helpful, Don and I'm glad you take your time to watch and comment, thank you! 😊
Merry Christmas Phil!! Hope you had a great Holiday celebration
Thank you, Nick! 😊
Turned out gorgeous, Phil! ❤ I’m glad you didn’t listen to Valerie 😂 😆 😝
LOL! Thank you, MaryBeth! 😃
❤Another beautiful piece of art. Happy New Year 2024❤
Happy New Year, Audie and thank you! 😃
Glad you listened to me about the high spots! Happy New Year, my friend.
Thanks for sounding off, Ken! 😊
Another gorgeous bowl from an unusual looking beginning...great work, Phil!
Thanks, Carol! 😊
ALmost time for refills on the sand o flex I love this piece, I turn alot of Mesquite In the Palm Springs area and it is great free wood
Sounds great! 😊
Beautiful, I really like the natural edge on this one, reminds me of a boat with the really low sides and the high "bow and stern".
😊
Superb! Been trying for ages to figure out what events would have to happen for you not to have clearance. lol
😃
