- www.timothyseaman.com/ Here's a somewhat informal video of a hammered dulcimer solo version of one of my favorite obscure Appalachian shape-note hymns, 'Lead Me to the Rock'. The anonymous words are based on Psalm 61: 'When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I!'
1. In seasons of grief to my God I’ll repair,
When my heart is o’erwhelm-ed with sorrow & care.
From the ends of the earth unto thee will I cry,
“Lead me to the rock that is higher than I!”
Higher than I, higher than I,
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
2. When Satan, my foe, comes in like a flood
To drive my poor soul from the fountain so good,
I’ll pray to the Savior who kindly did die,
“Lead me to the rock that is higher than I!”
Higher than I, higher than I,
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
3. And when I have ended my pilgrimage here,
In Jesus’ pure righteousness let me appear:
From the swellings of Jordan to thee I will cry,
“Lead me to the rock that is higher than I!”
Higher than I, higher than I,
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
4. And when the last trumpet shall sound thro’ the skies
And the dead from the dust of the earth shall arise,
With millions I’ll join, far above yonder sky,
To praise the great rock that is higher than I!
Higher than I, higher than I,
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
Glorifying God in the middle of all this turmoil. God bless you!
So very beautiful again! I like especially your solo hammered dulcimer videos -- more than those together with other instruments. Just because I like the sound of the hammered dulcimer so much.
Ahhh thank you. Music that soothes the soul.
Beautiful.
Beautiful. Thank you
So beautiful!
Beautifully played..
One chord change in here made me think that two other songs that would sound very nice on HD are The Rose and Castle in a Cloud. I’ll try those and share with you but I prob won’t get to it until October.
1st 🥇 😊so relaxing
Do you also mic the underside of the instrument or have you tried that too? Are there more sound holes underside than on top on your model? You would get more of the resonance and less of the attack sound… you could try mixing them in different ways after recording. The lower register might sound really cool that way too. If you don’t already :)
I definitely like the sound of the top much more; and there is already so much ringing going on that I have to make sure that I capture enough of the attack to give the dramatic and structural context. I don't want the music to float but to have impact! (That's my personal goal.)
