I often record my improvisations to explore what my heart has to say through my hammered dulcimer--I try not to think about anything technical. This approach was used while composing Everlasting. After reviewing the recording, I realized the time signature was 11/8. Next, I pondered the developing composition with more technical insight to construct a chord progression and melody. Once Everlasting was completed, I learned my heart was longing to prioritize and value the most important things such as love, faith, family, and relationships.

My grandfather built hammered dulcimers before he passed and my grandmother played them but is no longer able to.This ignites such nostalgia. Beautiful playing

Thank you for the beautiful music and video Joshua. My whole life i had the dream to master a musical instrument, but it never happened. Harp and flute my preference. Played a bit of flute and bass. Sadly they're collecting dust now. Next month i will be 62 and tell myself I'm too late and too old to start playing a dulcimer. More affordable than harp, but lovely heavenly sound too. Maybe i will try anyway. Thank you again for making the world nicer, friendlier and more peaceful. We all should take time to listen and connect to the fairies. ❤😊

Oh wow... I might have found a new favourite instrument. I thought only harps could make a sound as beautiful as this. This is an amazing composition, played so beautifully. Perfect music for that natural setting, and great for the themes you talk about. I really like using 11/8 as well.

I just realized that I did not yet comment this video although I listen to it quite often. It is wonderful like most of your tunes. And so often when I listen after a day full with work or other stuff then it feels like flying or diving away in spheres of light. Which is so important in our times. "Everlasting" especially is like an invitation to click on the repetition button to listen "everlasting" (at least: for a while).

Outstanding work ! As a santur player, I can relate to the creative process stemming from the improvisation, especially when carried on peculiar time signatures such as this 11/8, 9/8, 5/4... These signatures often provide a great backdrop to come up with more expressive melodies, but one must remain focused to avoid messing up the fragile rhythmic patterns. You masterfully succeeded in this one :)

I find myself fascinated by Joshua’s hands in this video. There is a beautiful stillness in his playing and almost no wrist movement. When practicing fast passages, my wrists become the focus of movement. A bad habit I’m trying to break! I wonder what exercises might be employed to develop technique like we see here. This video is beautiful to listen to, but also instructive to watch!
I'm glad to hear you're inspired to practice and motivated to become better. Try to isolate the essential movement and eliminate non-essential movement. Common problem areas are playing from the elbows and recoiling the hammer after a strike. I'd recommend that you practice your percussion rudiments. Also, focus on quality tone and stretch your body to eliminate tension before and after you practice. Quality tone and comfort in your body will help guide you to the proper technique.

Thanks, Curtis! It's a fun tune to play! Yes, the bass bridge on the right sure does help with those lower notes. I'm just about to release the sheet music for it. It's all notated, I'm just finalizing the engraving. If you ever want to get an instrument with a bass bridge on the right, you know where I"m at -- I'd love to help you. Keep up the great work.
