  • More Cowbell!!
    Don't Fear The Reaper is a song by the band Blue Öyster Cult from their 1976 album, Agents of Fortune. It was written and sung by the band's lead guitarist, Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. The song is built around Dharma's opening, repetitive guitar riff, while the lyrics deal with eternal love and the inevitability of death. Dharma wrote the song while picturing an early death for himself.
    Here’s the TAB: www.dropbox.com/s/42ea2nj0hv0...
    Released as an edited single, the song was Blue Öyster Cult's biggest chart success, reaching #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1976. Additionally, critical reception was mainly positive and, in 2004, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" was listed at number 405 on the Rolling Stone list of the top 500 songs of all time.
    But it really took off with the “More Cowbell” sketch on SNL, with Christopher Walken as the “famous producer” Bruce Dickinson and Will Ferrel as the fictional cowbell player Gene Frenkle.
    Buck Dharma’s solo is outstanding!!

    Excellent! Excellent! I already had this lead down, (not as good as you), but that Harmonic sustain trick, I never considered that! That was the only thing that eluded me, was the long sustain. I had tried various tricks, pedal effects, and even feedback, but you nailed it! What a simple answer, and I missed it! Ha! You are a natural teacher, and player. Not many are both. Thank you!

    Yes!!! I almost forgot how awesome this solo is. I tried to learn it years ago, but it was too much for me at the time. I'll give it another go. Right away I can see you are playing the very first part different than I was taught before, and it's much better! It's so awesome to have access to lessons like these, because I have a chance at actually playing this solo and playing it right. Now I will import the song into Ableton Live where I can loop the solo and slow it down to any speed I want. That REALLY helps me.
    The feedback trick is awesome!!! I never thought of doing that. There's one good reason to play through a real amp with real pedals. That might work good for Lynyrd Skynyrd's "That Smell" as well. I'll have to try it out. So funny when the dog started barking at the feedback!! LOL!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  3 роки тому +1

      @@sandrosarunic9486 That's a key. One thing that helps you get there faster is "singing" a solo first. If you can sing it, you can find the notes and you memorize it on the fretboard much faster.
      But whatever .... you got it now ... that's what counts. Great!!

      @MarkZabel  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I'm happy to do "Burnin' For You", but I'll pass on the fills. I'll do the solo and the riffs. Just too many fills ... and improvised at that. I have no doubt that Buck Dharma largely improvised the solo too, but at least that's somewhat contained. The fills are all over the place in that song. Hope that's okay.

    I've seen BOC maybe 40 times over the last 35 years and my favorite part of every show is the solo Buck does at the end of Reaper. Any chance you could tackle one of those? Like the one on Extra Terrestrial Live?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому +1

      Wow! That's a lot of concerts!
      I'll give it a listen. As a general rule I don't do live stuff on UA-cam, as it's usually improvised and not really meant to be reproduced, very long - often a minute or two or three, containing mistakes (which I think is actually cool, but not cool or fun to try to reproduce), and without any backing tracks that I can use without using the live track itself, which guarantees it's a good bet to be blocked for copyright. But I'll give it a listen and I'll do it if it makes sense. Do you have a link handy so I don't need to guess at what you're looking for? The times in the video of what you're looking for would be helpful too.

      Thanks. The ending solo goes from about 4:08 all the way to the end, which is well over 2 minutes of improvising. Which part of it would you like me to do? Alternatively, I suppose I could just break down what he's basically doing on the solo. Sounds pretty straightforward.

    • @snowdog202
      @snowdog202 5 років тому +1

      @@MarkZabel Up to about 5:17? I realize there's some repetition in there and some of the licks could just be broken down. I'm just a huge fan of buck Dharma's style.
