Yeah, because government and companies would _never_ make your gadgets quietly talk to each other independent of your "settings." The same way you _don't_ find out today that your phone is never truly "off" and absolutely _cannot_ be commandeered at any moment by those with the right tools... for the children, of course. Think of the children.

Ford has actually said it out loud, that the data is more valuable to them than the car is. In Wisconsin we worked on this for a while trying to get a law passed that makes the data in the car our property. GM came in to the hearings and caused as much confusion as they could and that was pretty much the end.
Recently we have had state reps say we should try again realizing how bad the companies lied to them.

Megacorps do this with everything. The energy companies in my state introduce laws and have representatives show up to make sure their interests are known, and without shock those laws pass easily. Hell, they introduced a bill to get rid of styrofoam food containers and a large grocery store chain came in to fight it and won. Something as silly as grocery food packing has megacorps altering the law to their benefit and not the benefit of the people.

The corporations write the laws and hand them already written to whoever they paid off to put forth as bills. This is has been known for decades. Former Sen. Bill Frist from TN? Yeah, he got immunity from lawsuits for vaccine manufacturers. It came out through an investigation that his office didn't write the bill; the pharmaceutical companies had their lawyers write the bill, their lobbyist's hand it to Frist's office, and he just got it passed.

When I was in automotive school, the instructors were talking about how the government was trying to get car companies to move to OBDIII. The system would give the car the ability to self test AND REPORT the emissions results to the respective agency. Then the car would give you so many start cycles to get it repaired before it locks out the starter solenoid circuit so you can't use it until it's repaired. This was in 2018 so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Names, phone numbers, addresses, what-nots... I make sure to wipe that info out for each rental I use. In 2019, when I went to pick up my new semi, my company rented me a car and I took the 2019 Nissan Altima and after about 5 hours. The car noticed my reaction time slowing and suggested I pull off and take a 20 minute break from driving.
Almost every vehicle made after 2015 is: tracking your eyes, recording audio and inside and video outside of the car (sometimes front and rear cams), they're tracking which features you use and whether you use them at dangerous times, tracking your gps location, acceleration and brake monitoring, etc.
It's only good if you're accused of causing an accident, but the cameras and/or sensors show that you weren't. Other than that, it's ALL bad!

Like all the home security systems that just so happen to have terrible security and everyone can download the video and audio.
You wouldn't mind recording yourself all that much if you knew it wasn't leaving the location and would be personal. It's a totally different discussion if anyone can look at it.

Yeah, you can't even safely record audio in a security system in some areas because of these laws, but your car can collect video and audio without your consent. And more! Did you know that Nissan's privacy policy specifically says that they can collect and share your sexual activity and collect your DNA? Since Nissan vehicles have interior cameras that means they are creating sex tapes of all their customers and of course sifting through text messages to find pictures and naughty conversations to add to their profile. And they can also collect DNA samples when you have your car maintained. The fact that minors do this means that they are without question in possession of illegally created and retained child pornography. Note that in some states it is legal for children to engage in such relations, but it still is not legal for even them to record themselves before they are both age 18.
And they aren't even the worst offender. Subaru's privacy policy says that just by being a passenger in a vehicle you consent to your data being collected. Even though a company has to get specific informed consent before collecting data about children they do so anyway.

Steve... thank you for providing this information. The part about just "call logs" has always been in the public domain. I can obtain call logs from the phone company to show your bills, which have a complete list of what number you called and when. I don't agree with that being available, but there is case law allowing it now and it would take some concerted effort to restrict that to only be obtainable via a subpoena or other legal instrument that would come from a judge. However! To record ANYTHING privately discussed or mentioned and gained without consent is already a violation of our Constitutional rights. There is something fishy about how this was danced around by the courts. It should be that those on the bench should hold to their sworn duties and if it doesn't apply to ONE law but indeed DOES circumvent others - then they are legally REQUIRED to being suit against whomever is breaking that law on behalf of the PEOPLE. THAT is what is NOT being done - we are awash in bought-and-paid-for corrupt judiciary, law enforcement and government corruption. This came up in the Suzanne Morphew murder case in Colorado. Police suspected her husband of murdering her and disposing of the body because he had put his phone in airplane mode and was seen on cameras driving around to dumpsters throwing away something. Police used his pickup's GPS data to track his movements through software developed by the Berla corporation to pull those travel logs since the phone's travel path was untraceable because of the airplane mode. (Side Note: he was later tried and found not guilty based on lack of solid evidence, AND her body was then later discovered in an area of Colorado his pickup had never been to but is notorious as a serial murder dumping ground. On top of that an unknown male's DNA who police know as a serial murderer of an as yet unidentified person was found in her vehicle and other locations with nobody knowing how it got there). I was once testing my phone for "custom advertising" based on spying. What surprised me though, was that I tried powering the phone off (not just the screen, I mean fully powered down). And it still worked... but I was testing it in a car, with bluetooth infotainment.
So the car may be spying even without the phone, and/or engaging in 2 way crosstalk of recorded data.
OR... a fully powered down phone is _still_ listening. Also very possible... remember removable batteries? How does a phone know you've been holding the power on for a full second to power back on?
I should re-test with the phone's battery completely drained (to the point it can't wake up enough to say 'no' anymore). Then charge it, reunite it with the car, and see if there's any data moved that way.
