Just before ice out in March and April is an excellent time to target Northern Pike. Fish will move shallow and become hyper aggressive as they prepare for the spring spawn. I ventured out on the last ice of the season on Tiber Reservoir in north central Montana near the town of Shelby.
    Tackle featured in this video:
    - Ugly Stick MH 30" GX2 Ice Rod: amzn.to/3PL3zKm
    - Daiwa Revros LT 1000: amzn.to/3xlNhkH
    - Quickstrike Rig: alnk.to/5uflTrZ
    - Sullivan Tip Down Auto Jigger: sullivantipdow...

I remember when you and your wife came over and fished Smith for snot rockets and I gave you some info on fishing it over on iceshanty. You have come a long way in your pike knowledge since then, that's for sure. Another good one to fish over on the east side is Nelson reservoir. I go over and fish it sometimes with my brother. It's a lot easier to get dialed in on that one than it is to try and fish Peck and the fishery is quite diverse and robust e.g. pike, perch, walleye, and whitefish are all species we have caught on it. If you do fish it, do not stay at the Sleeping Buffalo, either camp or stay in Malta. Malta is a most excellent small town with a number of places to stay that are quite nice.

I love the GX2's as both a fun Dock fishing rod and definitely for my JawJacker and Jigging JawJacker. I own some spendy ice rods ( spendy to me) that could fill the bill but totally Overkill for the job at hand.

The winter before last, we had enough ice on Flathead lake to ice fish, We caught a dozen pike over 10lbs and we caught one at 23lbs. The guy next to us was fishing for his first time at flathead and pulled a 36 pounder out. Pike ice fishing is a blast

@shawnclements14 I have yet to catch a pike on Flathead lake. Last year was my first time hitting it and I fished it in March 2023. Caught a bunch of lakers and whitefish, but not any Pike. I even saw a picture of a huge pike, maybe that 36 pounder you saw. I went back this year Begining of February 2024 and Ice Fished Flathead lake again a couple days. But fishing was much tougher than last year. Soaked baits for pike and not even a bite. Caught a few lakers and one white, plus some small perch. Not sure where all the fish were this year. The guys I talked to in 2023 in the parking lot said they have good luck on Hot Dogs apparently, haha. Guess I'll have to get some next time.

@Zak-tp6yq how do you know that there are not pike of this caliber in Flathead lake? Have you fished it. I've seen many photos of 20 plus pound pike out of flathead and the one I saw last year was huge. Probably pretty close to 50 inches.

Some day I might actually do something other than work in Montana. I actually spend more time there than at home in Oregon. Just not for fun or to see what the State really has to offer.
I drive by that exit on I-15 twice a week, but I take the next exit (44/Valier) to go to Kalispell.
Ever fish Frances? I rarely see boats out there, but come the ice I see lots of people fishing. No idea what they are fishing for.

You would have better luck using mono. Mono is way more abrasion resistant and is stronger when knicked. But steel leaders are they way to go for pike
