He was getting emotional as he was rowing away from the island because it had been his home for the last 4 years, all day, every day and he was realizing that he was going to miss it there. Even though he never planned to be there, he was safe & had food, water and shelter and also he was used to it by then. If you're going to be stranded anywhere, it was a pretty ideal spot.
CHuck unbuckling the seat belt in the plane to retrieve the watch, saved his life. They crashed in the south pacific with tropical water temperatures around 78.
Seven year old me was crying profusely when Wilson was floating away and I couldn’t understand why all the adults in the theater were chuckling at the fact he was crying over a volleyball. I turned to my parents while bawling “why are they laughing at his friend!!!???”😂 My parents still love to tease me about that till this day but Wilson truly was his friend and kept him sane while he was stuck on that island
Thanks guys, seriously respect how you were both anxious at the meeting at the end, concerned about the fact that she was married. Whole lot of nothing was just a reference to the fact that you can drive through the entire country and not find anything that isn’t already in front of you
I remember watching this when it first came out. Which was years ago when I was a child. I remember being captivated by the performance and little details. Even now I still remember how I didn't move once. That's how good it was.
Lots of ironies, and you guys are smart, you pick up on them! Like that she married Spalding, the dentist "he was afraid to see". What i love is figuring out that Bettina's gate (the wing lady) had her name and her fella's name on it. You see the package 📦 sent to him in Russia, he opens the door and we see someone cheating with him. At the end of the movie, her gate only has her name, Bettina, not his, so we know she's single. It's all about ...timing. Kelly was his past and Bettina is his future. And he has to go back to see her, to answer the one and only unresolved question: What was in her box? My guess is: partner dissolution papers. I think this is Tom Hanks best movie, and another wonderful hit by Robert Zemekis.
8:26 its a family christmas dinner. We have big meals like that on thanksgiving and christmas day too. They are wearing christmas sweaters and playing christmas music.
Christmas sweaters are an American only thing btw. That would be an absolute no go for example in Europe (we know what we are celebrating without having to remember ourselves wearing these..😄)
16:08 "How did he survive this?". Because it's Tom Hanks! Just imagine if the pilots were Bruce Willis, Sly Stallone, and Wil Farrell.. All 4 would have survived..
I wanted to recommend "Frailty." It's a 2001 movie about 2 brothers. On a lighter note, "O Brother, Where Art Thou" and "Raising Arizona" are classic comedies.
This movie seriously triggered me with memories of abandonment. When he said he has "ice in his glass" I think that was the best line because it completely encapsulated the feeling of isolation and loneliness. BTW the dentist is a POS. LOL
Great movie. Can I recommend Unbroken. True story of an Olympic runner in WWII, and let's just say there's some very similar aspects to Castaway, except 10x worse. And it's a true story. The guy is a legend. He actually just died right after the movie came out. The suffering he had to endure is insane.
Getting the engagement ring; her reaction wasn't "disappointment and doesn't want to get married"; she was shocked and surprised like most women are and doesn't know how to react!!
At least he meets that new girl at the end remember her husband was in Russia with another lady, so the wings lady meets him who also kept him with a purpose to deliver her package
56:58 He decided to test the tree and rope with a wooden dummy to see if it was strong enough. He was going to end his life, but the tree broke, and he was glad he tested it first.
He tells Wilson he knows of an extra 30 piece of rope but he isn't going back up there. He does go back, to the top of the mountain, and there is the dummy that he tested to see if hanging himself would work. The original theatrical and VHS release contained this scene. It was removed from subsequent releases and is not present in any televised version.😢
Heh, but, good movie, reliable shipper... this is one kickback arrangement I have no problem with. If nothing else, it was worth it to have a recognizable shipper instead of a goofy made up one, so as to not to take one out of the movie
Delighted you could react to such a quality movie. Now you are ready for “Castaway 2, Wilson’s revenge.” You didn’t think that Wilson was going to put up with being left in the middle of the Pacific Ocean did you? Just joking. Although someone did a short UA-cam video on it😂
He was testing the tree branch on the cliff to see if it would hold his weight enough to hang himself there. He didn't want to go get the rope from that spot because of the associated memories.
He gave her an engagement ring before he left, meaning when he gets comes home from work, they'll (finally!) set a marriage date - the look on his fiancé's face means she's been patiently waiting for a long time for him to propose. It looks like she's earning her PhD, so they're both very busy, which is why they have to use calendars to plan date night! Keep up the good work guys!
1. It's a good thing he wasn't strapped in that plane. He would have died. 2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank-and-file worker either. He's much higher up the food chain. 3. To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds, work out and grow out his beard for his time spent on the deserted island. 4. Talk about using realistic tactics to survive. 5. Wilson is exactly what he needed to maintain sanity. 6. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Bettina Peterson. Inside the opening scene package, among other things, were her divorce papers. 7. When he's talking to his friend and says, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me. 8.Tom Hanks is the GOAT of my lifetime. I'm 63 years old. 9. The guy with whom she has a child and a warm home? No. How could you suggest that? Chuck needed to visit her for closure, but he was also right to shut her down and tell her to go back home. He is truly a noble soul.
