Why I’m Leaving New York City

- After living in Manhattan NYC for 20 out of 33 years of my life, I’m finally leaving. It’s where I grew up but I’m just done with it. It’s still one of the greatest cities in the world but the NY city and state government has utterly abused my trust and money, and public safety and infrastructure and the subway have gotten worse and worse, as has the government's handling of crime and the migrant crisis. It’s time to leave.

No explanation needed. New York is a disaster of incompetence.
Especially when they put illegal immigrants first before it's citizens.
Lol
#BLM
I beg to differ. While NY is bad, LA is on a new level of incompetence.
Not incompetence. It is AS INTENDED. Keep voting Democrat and it will continue.
I’m from Australia and I was in New York recently. It was absolutely horrible. Subway was absolutely disgusting. Felt like a third world city
This is the magic of NYC. As if it was aseptic everywhere then there would be no point in traveling.
NYC in the 1980s was even more "wild" and unpredictable. It was dangerous alby through it until it breathed freedom.
And it was never a city for family people. That's what the other 99% of cities in the US are for. What sets NYC apart from other cities is, so to speak, the spirit of the old, free and crazy times (the 1970s and 1980s).
@@ashwilliams4989 There is no magic in NYC. All I saw were overrated landmarks and homeless naked people constantly in my face asking for money. I’ve been through 3rd world cities much better than there.
Hey! Show some respect for third-world cities.

Another major crime problem is if you decide to defend yourself then they arrest YOU!
And arresting homeowners instead of squatters 😆
Sounds like something you would see in a game like Grand Theft Auto, where real life is parodied. But victims getting arrested for defending themselves, and homeowners getting arrested for evicting squatters, is really happening. When parody becomes reality.

It's not just NYC. I often complain a lot about potholes. The reason is because something like potholes should be the easiest and most simple form of our tax dollars in use, and I've watched one of our major highways in Minnesota grow these same potholes for over a year now. And then you get people who say "but the government needs our taxes to maintain our roads and infrastructure!" but they aren't even capable of doing that! in 2020 the American government (ONLY FEDERAL) received 3.42 TRILLION DOLLARS in taxes. And what exactly do the citizens get for it? No healthcare, no insurance, we are taxed on a dollar up to 7 times, it's just getting ridiculous. Cost of living continually rises while the quality of living deteriorates.
I have an engineering degree and I have to think for hours before I make a decision to spend on a ~$500 product but new york gives people $500 a night hotel? Are you kidding me.... if you build a cheap shelter for the harmless migrants, it is fine. But I wonder what you are thinking about… Many people are living in extreme conditions and you give these people $500 a night hotel… I just can’t understand. Also, think of the people who are sufferings and you still give these people $500 a night hotel… spend wisely and help those who are suffering…

Parts of LA are the same.
7:15 - I live in Singapore. You'll be lucky if you see someone so much as accidentally drop a piece of paper on the subway. There are no crazy people yelling and screaming. There are no disruptions. There are no fights. There are no murders. There is no National Guard equivalent. People are nice to each other, behave themselves, and have self-respect in equal measure. And yes, we do it all with some of the lowest tax rates I've ever seen.
Singapore is mostly East and South Asian. Those groups value hard work rules and discipline. The white ruling class in NYC is mostly leftist ex hippie boomers surrounded by minorities.
Singapore under Lee Kuan yew enforced harsh cultural rules most importantly English usage and proficiency. The USA has allowed itself to be watered row by diversity multiculturalism nonsense. And that explains New York City, current cultural, social, economic, and environmental disaster
I lived in NYC from mid-90s to 2022, now live in Singapore, and I think you are both missing some key points. It is true that Singapore is very clean, generally very safe (though they get their occasional crazies as well), and hyper-efficient (the MRT and the airport are stellar). Yet a recent poll showed that most Singaporeans would rather escape and live outside of Singapore, mostly due to the high cost of living and very narrow expectations and options. And despite ostensibly being multicultural Singapore is increasingly becoming homogeneous around Chinese culture.
In contrast I found NYC's unabashed multiculturalism and acceptance to be its greatest strength, and what made it so much better than any other city. To live in NYC was always a challenge, even more so for immigrants and artists and entrepreneurs and dreamers - but that was a crucible that was common to everyone, and there was a pride and shared experience that I never detected in any other major city. I don't blame so-called "multiculturalism nonsense" (which reeks of the Midwest or South). Rather I blame the politicians and Democratic machine - not that I am anti-Democrat (Biden over Trump forever), but when one party becomes too entrenched then inefficiencies and corruption tend to follow. Guiliani is a madman now, but back in the 1990s he was the right person, as was Bloomberg after 9/11. NYC arguably needs a center-right mayor now.
Yes, and a beer in a mid-tier restaurant costs $18 SGD. Only rich people have privilege and enjoy life in Singapore. No place else on earth better demonstrates the negatives of late-stage capitalism than Singapore. It is a completely soulless place, worshipping money above all else.
I disagree. I've lived in both cities and SG is definitely not just for the rich. I have never seens homelessness in SG, I've never seen a drug addict here. Almost everyone lives in government housing and the social net for the poor is huge. The idea that SG is hyper capitalist is stupid, most firms are largley owned by the SWF and the state controls the econony waaaay more than its comparators. Alcohol prices are about the same as london due to taxes but food is waaaay cheaper! It is easy to eat healthy here. You don't ever see morbidly obese people who can't afford vegetables for instance
You're the second major NYC UA-camr I've noticed has made video(s) about NYC issues rather than their usual content. The other is Cash Jordan who used to post about real estate and finding a good apartment, but lately has gone into detail about the very problems you mention, and more, like the large number of stores that were driven to close by excessive shoplifting.

In the 1950s and 1960s it was possible for a gifted artist to live in the city and to have a studio space. There were many small shops throughout the city where they could find the art materials (and all kinds of odds and ends) to create original work. Artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Nevelson, Joseph Cornell, Jasper Johns were able to take advantage of that affordable climate. Today's NYC is a constant stimulus but the highly creative atmosphere of earlier decades is completely gone. Even by the time that Basquiat and Keith Haring were doing their thing the city was becoming a difficult place.
I agree the whole arts world is geared towards, being pushed towards money. Art, in any form, should be about expression not what it could make dollar wise. I agree with your point about studios, supplies, training etc etc all becoming unaffordable. Even funding for the arts is a lot less.
I feel the same way. The culture here in America, is that when it's not "your" money, you can spend it however you want. And this is exactly what the government does, spending recklessly, with almost no discretion. And they are not held accountable.
The same day an nypd officer was killed, a man was pushed infront of the train and killed, that same day mayor adams spoke about how the crime in the subways is at an all time low…..
He and all who vote blue here have the blood on their hands.
Crime everywhere appears much higher than it is, compared to the past, because everybody now has a video recording device in their pocket today, in the form of a smartphone. This wasn't the case 10, 20, 30, 50 years ago.
That is, the chances of a crime being recorded is nearly 100% today, vs 1% or lower in the past. So it seems like crime is super high now when it really is much lower than 1975 thru 2000, nationwide. This includes NYC and other major cities.
They can't report crimes they can't show up to. NYPD has been gutted and they aren't even enforcing laws unless there is an immediate threat
@@Geotpf: No, they just aren't recording them the same as before. The prime example is from California, wherein they won't arrest anyone for shoplifting less than $900 in value. The thefts are still happening, now more than ever, and businesses are being forced to shut down as a result, yet officials will claim crime is down because of such manipulations. No arrests or charges means those incidents are not counted in the stats. NYC is engaged in similar, slimy tactics to try to sway people into not believing the evidence of their eyes and ears.
They literally had to deploy the national guard to stand watch over the subways how is that not proof of crime@@Geotpf
My neighborhood declined like so many other places in the US. Growing up, you're just used to the idea that the park, is not for use by families or regular people. I am so glad you are talking about this. Loved your channel before, but now I’m a bonafide fan of your ways.
It is ESSENTIAL that you understand two interconnected facts:
1. NYC does not care about your well being outside of it being complementary to your productivity and therefore their ability to profit from your life. Your life is meaningless to them outside of profit. That includes caring for your mental well being and other “empathetic” resources. Again this is implemented in order to keep your system up and running for profit.
2. Your pain threshold will always be pushed to the maximum in order to maximize profit on their end. They will adjust and reel back as needed depending on the data.
I'm so glad you're addressing this. Everyone speaking out is the only way it changes.
Not if they keep voting for the same old nonsense and drinking the PC kool-aid.
Yes but we need to agree on the fundamental problems.
Hopefully, I'm Dutch but this is sad..
The main change needed is to stop the constant voting for dems. They have ruined several big cities.
or vote differently!
Grew up in Brooklyn, frequented in Manhattan, even dirty old Times Square, playing pinball with my niece and nephew in the '70's, riding subways to almost every neighborhood. The biggest difference between now and then is their weren't as many mentally ill people. Never saw a gun, nobody was naked. Took the subways by myself to the beach, shopped with mother at Macys. My mother worked in Manhattan and took the subway every day. Miss the old shops, coffee shops ,delis, bookstores. It's a shame. You made the right move.
NYC and the whole country! had public mental hospitals. They weren't great, they had their problems, and it's easy to cheer for Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but so many of those people can't care for themselves and needed to be in hospitals for their own safety, for everyone's safety (and hygiene). There were always many mentally ill people (maybe ore than most cities!), but when things got bad they got help.

Comparing an old city like New York to a new city like Singapore is apples to oranges. NY has been built over again and again losing all potential for space. Singapore is small, conservative, and new allowing for it to learn from the mistakes of older cities. Their Prime Minister was also in charge of parks and recreation or something of the sort, which is why their architecture and city planning is more efficient and human friendly. NY was built in the industrialized West with coal, steel, and sweatshops. It's no mystery why it is the way it is.
I've been following along with Louis Rossman's battle against the NYC bureaucracy and trying to get an answer about a bill sent to an address where he never lived, and now he's moved his whole business to Texas to get away from their constant shuffling off of responsibility.
Yes. Louis actually showed a lot of UA-camrs how it’s done. Cheers from an ex-new yorker who happily lives in Miami for last 3 years and counting

I used to pay about 30% taxes when living in São Paulo and I moved to Sweden for exactly the same thought process you demonstrated in this video. No, but I'd rather pay this 52% for the rest of my life and having the guarantee of a good life, safety, healthcare, etc etc then go back to live in a city like São Paulo where the 30% I paid was literally to waste.

How can it be that the violent crime rate in New York is rather low, especially when compared with the 70s and 80s?
I am a native New Yorker Brooklynite. I left to the midwest in 2021. I miss some things like the musuems and prospect park etc. Overall happy to be away for it all.
I am from New Jersey and this has always been a thing. Many people live in New Jersey and would commute to NYC for work. New Jersey is less expensive and not as fast paced. Growing up, we would visit NYC sometimes for plays or go to the harbor or shopping, but that was about it.
As a native New Yorker many of the reasons you stated are exactly why I left many years ago! Good for you and your family. Everyone deserves to live in much better environments than NYC which has become absolutely embarrassing in every sense of the word!
Same here and I hate it because I'll always love the idea of NYC. There was a short time where it seemed to turn around. But, I don't remember it being this bad in the early 90's when I commuted back and forth from the Bronx for work.

The funny thing is all the people I know who live in New York say this, and then when you ask them who they voted for, it's the people that are currently there. So in all fairness, they really have themselves to blame for the situation that they spend so much time complaining about.
You can thank Uncle Joey and Auntie K for the broken policies.

We used to have mental institutions, but then it was decided that they were cruel. So now, they live on the streets. There's a middle ground, but we as a society can't seem to figure it out.
Nearly every city upstate has an abandon high rise 'state hospital'. Large buildings and think of all the crazy people they held at one time. Now the crazy people just wonder around, and scream at people, I didn't know why they were all closed, but you probably right, society thought it was cruel.
It’s more cruel to not care for these people, it was frankly far more cruel and idiotic to just let them live on the streets
Agreed. Its more cruel IMO to let people who NEED institutional care to just fend for themselves on the streets. Meanwhile the rest of us have to deal with them. It’s unacceptable.
It's not society it's our politicians....
If you watch old movies & cartoons, they often had memes about "calling the men in white coats" when someone was acting crazy. That came from the fact that we used to have an entire infrastructure for mental health care, including dedicated staff who would respond to mental health emergencies (rather than police), and facilities where the patients could be brought. (Those big state hospitals & asylums.)
Unfortunately the care administered at such institutions ranged from "indifferent" to "sadistic". We had the infrastructure, but the techniques and understanding of mental disorders were lacking.
Regardless, the Federal funding for such programs was cut bit by bit until it was finally ended entirely during the Reagan administration. That is why the mentally ill homeless population exploded in the 1980s and hasn't gone down since, and why there are so many abandoned mental institutions in every state.
I've always wondered what we could accomplish if we had a mid-20th Century level of funding and dedicated infrastructure for mental health, combined with modern-day understanding of treatment. It wouldn't be perfect, but I'll bet it would be one hell of an improvement over our current strategy of "there is no strategy".
