Please do not de-claw your cat. It's not only extremely painful and inhumane, but it also changes the way a cat walks. It's uncomfortable and can lead to long-term pain and arthritis ❤

Just want to chime in with the story of my de-clawed cat, Abby.
I've owned her since I was 10, and at the time both her and her sister were precious little troublemakers. I wasn't aware that kittens could be trained, and I trusted that my parents knew best when it came to cat care (they never did). Of course, my parents hated the schemes they got up to. Climbing the Christmas tree, scratching couches and making a competition out of clawing at drywall. Her sister was unfortunately let outside before being spayed, and given up to humane society after becoming pregnant. (Not my choice, I begged to keep her and promised to look after the kittens and find them homes. No dice.)
So then it was just Abby. The clawing worsened, because of course it would when a cat is stressed about losing a companion and not being given proper enrichment. So, my parents gave me a ultimatum. Either she would also be given away, or she would be de-clawed. Back then, I was told it was a simple surgery, that it wouldn't hurt after healing, and was in no way aware of just how inhumane the procedure is. So I let them declaw her.
Abby came back home with stiches in her front paws, and couldn't walk on anything that wasn't carpet. I was worried that she was in pain, and wasn't being herself. my parents offered the comforting lie that she would be fine after she healed. (To be fair, I don't think they were aware of the cruel reality of de-clawing either)
She changed after being de-clawed. Her old confidence and playfulness became rare to see. She became an anxious cat that was incredibly attached to me because I was probably the only human she felt safe with.
I regret letting them do that surgery every day, and I hold a quiet fury at my parents, who still hide behind the excuse of "property damage" when faced with the fact that what happened was unethical, irresponsible and cruel. It's hard to hold back the tears when I think about how that choice is something that can *never* be taken back. She will never have her front claws again. I desperately wish I knew about nail caps back then, that I did research as I should've.
So, as someone who had their cat de-clawed, please don't ever consider that surgery. Find a different solution, be patient. If you can't properly care for a cat, it's the right choice to give them to an adoption center.
As for Abby, she's dozing off beside me as I write this. While I can't reverse the harm done upon her, I can do everything in my power to make sure the rest of her life is full of love and educated care.
This isn't something I expect to be read, but something I feel I need to say. A confession of a sin, in a way. Every creature on this planet deserves compassion, respect and proper care, and it fucking sucks that I couldn't give that to my cat when she was young.

It might have been the litter they were using, not her being spiteful. Some litter types hurt their feet when they have been declawed, so they choose to go somewhere that doesn't hurt. Which is understandable. I just don't understand why this is even legal anywhere anymore. It isn't where I live, neither is cropping ears and docking tails. Even neuter and spaying is only done on dogs when there is a medical reason for it. Although it's legal to spay/neuter cats, to avoid getting a higher stray cat population.

But, I am deeply opposed to the animal shelters' typical requirement that even very young male cats be neutered before they can be adopted. Many of these cats develop hip problems because they don't have the correct hormonal balance when their bones were growing. A friend has a cat that will be semi-crippled for life because of this. I would not adopt a male cat from a shelter because of this risk especially given the number of kittens who need a home.

    • @aruemon3086

Of course, I don’t personally know your life, nor where you live, but I would really recommend getting an older cat! I have 3 cats and they don’t really ever scratch the furniture. Whenever I see them scratching a post or their cat tree I give either treats, extra pets, or extra play time. They are 9, 7, and 2. The youngest is becoming a lot better behaved very quickly via this method. Sometimes I feel like my 9 year old cat can read my mind because if she’s doing something she’s not supposed to and I say her name in a firm voice, she immediately stops. I don’t have to do anything else except praise her.
In short: frequent nail trimmings, positive reinforcement, 15+ mins of playtime (the younger they are, the more active they are), and any sort of enrichment. My cats love it when I put treats and catnip into a crumpled piece of paper (your cat may eat the paper so be careful. I haven’t had that issue though). For some reason they love to rip it to shreds and collect their goodies. You can also let them outside depending on your situation. We have an 8 foot cinder block fence and they just sunbathe and chase bugs. They can’t get out and there aren’t any birds in my area.

This was true with most of the cats I've ever known, but I had one tuxie who was the Genghis Khan of clawing. I live in an old house with old growth redwood door frames, REALLY hard wood, and yet, she turned one doorway into a scratching post and did serious damage. I let her; it wasn't worth the fight and now that she's gone, I have it as a cat art installation and memorial to her wonderful personality. I miss her so. I would never have declawed her. I did put my leather chair in my office and kept the door closed, lol. I had to add a hook and eye to keep it closed, because she was clever with doorknobs too!

@@legendaryworrier I guess you haven’t met my lovely black kitties with pumpkin colored eyes. Thor and Loki have destroyed my leather couch and love seat, have laid waste to my antique upholstered bench in the foyer, and have even decided the first step on the stairs makes an EXCELLENT scratching station. I’ve had indoor cats my entire life, and I’ve never had such a destructive pair. We have scratching posts everywhere, we have cat towers for them to climb with sisal wrapping, we have cardboard scratching pads, and they do use them. They just seem to love leather and that one carpeted step more. I have used all my cat training experience and talked to their vet, but nothing has helped. So we just throw another afghan over the scratched parts and let them be the best cats in the world. My Siamese cats have never scratched the furniture, so I have no idea why these two are so incorrigible. My cat was a feral rescue. My parents, who were overeducated Boomers, chose to declaw her when she continued to scratch me and my brother. I would learn years later how absolutely cruel this was, but I was powerless to stop them in my youth.
The irony is that she didn't let it stop her. That cat would go on to still climb trees and become the neighbourhood top dog (so to speak). She was a tough old girl who didn't let anyone step on her, let alone our dogs, whom she constantly put in their place even without those claws. Sadly one day she came back to us having lost her first fight ever in the outdoors and passed shortly after due to liver failure. I'll always remember her as the roughest, toughest gal without fingers to ever live.

I made a comment about how most of the time it's simple misunderstanding that leads to cats being de-clawed. It's the vets that agree to the procedure that let the cats and the owners down by not informing them of what it really means to de-claw a cat. If everyone knew how horrible it was, and that it's not as simple as removing the claw like removing a human nail, it's really amputating the first digit, I doubt anyone would go through with it if they really loved their cat.
I'm so glad your parents eventually learned from this and now that they know better, it won't happen again.
I've made mistakes myself. I've released pet gerbils into the woods thinking that "setting them free" was doing them a kindness. Now I realise they likely wouldn't have survived the night and would've been absolutely terrified and surrounded by predators.
I've had hamsters that were in cages too small. Guinea pigs that never got their nails cut. Fish that always died because I didn't know anything about looking after them. The list goes on. Pets have suffered because of my negligence and lack of education. But never again will that happen because I've learned from it. I'm just sad and ashamed that those animals had suffer for me to get where I'm at now.

Keeping a hamster in a too small space because you didn't know they needed more is one thing, removing an important part of an animal's body permanently just because the owner finds it an inconvenience, is another story. If cats didn't need claws, they wouldn't have them. I had never heard about declawing before moving to the US. It's so crazy to me. It's no different then being like: "My dog's tongue is always hanging out of the side of his mouth and he's drooling on my carpet. Heck we even found her in one of our trees more than a few times. I have a cat and he has many scratching posts and he still attacks the couch. I cant trimm his paws(7 kg ,hella big and no no chance) but fuck couches. I can always get a new one.

For the people who are thinking about declawing your cat: NEVER do it. It's basically removing the first knuckle off of every finger. And cats walk on their tiptoes which results in to more problems. From not being able to defending themselves which results in to biting accidents to arthritis and more vet bills.

The declawing of her is so sad. It’s so good to see that she’s with a loving family 🥺
