Budget things we do around here:
    1. We have a house phone, no cells. $100/yr (Magic Jack)
    2. We have Netflix & internet... no t.v. service
    3. We garden our veggies and some fruit.
    4. We can (preserve) our garden veg. -Mason jars can get pricey so we hit up auctions & yard sales and can find them for 25-35 cents a piece verses the 80 cents a piece brand new. Plus they are good for a lifetime if you keep care of them and don't chip them. We actually saved enough at the grocery the first year just waterbath canning (fruits, pickling, and tomatoes) to save up for a $100 pressure canner that can handle meat/veg. So when meat is on sale, I'm stocking up and canning it to use through the year and avoiding the higher prices. (Saving THOUSANDS... especially when you are feeding a large family)
    5. We paid cash for a van off craigslist when my car broke down beyond repair. No car note... monthly savings... Hundreds! We just needed it to last a year, two years max to save enough to buy something better... 7 years later, it's still running like a champ.
    6. Bedding at goodwill- $3. Makes amazing curtains, fabric for pillows, handbags, dresses even.
In 5 years we've paid off $30,000 in debt and have saved enough to where we will be house hunting at the first of the year.
*Just to give your viewers a few more ideas.

Clover Doll I won’t drive without a cell phone! How do you manage?!

    • @cloverdoll1228
      @cloverdoll1228 6 років тому +7

Not sure if this is a joke response or serious... so in case it is a serious question:
It's not that hard really. If we were to break down... we walk to the nearest house/business and ask to borrow a phone. Simple really. We keep the vehicles in good condition so there aren't unexpected breakdowns and if a tire blows, we know how to change it. No navigation app needed because when we learned how to drive we also learned how to read a map for when we go somewhere new.
Regardless of whether or not someone has a cell phone... if you drive a car, you should be able to do these simple things.

Clover Doll I wasn’t joking or making fun. I’m serious. I have locked myself out of my house and car, my “belt” broke in my engine and my car died on the off ramp of the highway, I was rear ended and injured.,, just a lot of times I’ve been in emergencies. I’d never approach a strangers house. I live in the Boston area😮😉

I live in a somewhat small town in Indiana. We're the county seat with a big University but still quite rural. If someone is pulled over to the side... there's someone there stopped with them to give a hand. Not quite Mayberry (Andy Griffith Show) but loads of Hoosier Hospitality everywhere you turn. If we were located in Indianapolis... we might feel differently.

Good tips. My husband and I committed to having beans and rice for dinner once a week. Costs like $2. Basically cutting out spending money on food just one day a week really adds up in savings. Just throw on some seasonings and hot sauce and it is amazing. Makes enough for lunch and dinner that day.

    Great video! Thank you Kallie!
We have a couple of "rules" we live by:
    1. We eat our meals at home. We don't buy pretzels/donuts/waffels or beverages when we are outside. We do go out to eat at a restaurant or we will eat ice cream, but for us that's an event and not just because it's there.
    2. Concearing bigger items: wait a couple of days. If we still need it, than it's ok to buy it.
(Ok, our washing machine broke in january and I bought a new one instantly. But as a family of 4 we really need one! :-D )
    3. We buy less meat and more vegetables and we mostly buy what's in season.
    4. We make a grocerie list and stick to it. (That's acutally just half true. WE make the grocerie list and my husband and our boys have to stick to it. If I decide, that we need something else, than we buy it. But I'm no emotional shopper, so that's ok)
    Love from Heidelberg!

      Hi Mathilda L.,
Thank you for your great suggestions. Realize that you have a family of 4 and most definitely need a wash. machine.
My brother is single and opted to go "off the grid" and not buy a wash. machine after his broke. He now has done his own laundry by hand including the mattress cover for 5-6 mo. now & hangs laundry outside to dry in good weather.
Or lets them dry indoors in the cellar. And yes, his dryer died too!

Sometimes you're so broke that you can't save, cut corners, or invest. It's just a reality of life sometimes. Don't get too down on yourself it happens to most people at some point. My husband made good money and had insurance and we still ended up $50,000 in debt when he got cancer. Sometimes it isn't even something that huge. Losing a job or having to move at the wrong time can make everything crumble.

I am a college student and my money saving tips are using ebates, coupons (retailmenot), Walmart Saving catcher, and sign up for rewards at places you like to shop! I do not eat fast food and on my own I never order takeout, and very little do I go out to eat. I usually buy generic food brands instead of the name brand food! My saying is if it's not broken or can still function with a little damage, keep it, you don't need to buy a new one unless it's completely unusable! Keep on saving!

Things I stopped doing that saved me a ton of money:
    1. Stop "studying" at Starbucks so often so I stopped spending on drinks
    2. Unsubscribing Starbucks email (double star days, deals) so I won't be as tempted to reload my Starbucks card
    3. Stopped paying to sit in a nice cafe. I only do it now if I really really want to read outdoors.
    4. Stopped buying fast fashion knowing it's super ephemeral. If I really liked an item, I'll wait for weeks (sometimes even months!) to see if I would still like the item. And my patience almost always pay off because retailers usually have discounts/huge markdowns then! :) And just thinking of an exploding closet or selling an item online tires the shit out of me.

Meal planning is everything! Even for quick meals or snacks. Planning and limiting your list helps so much. A recent one is a price book/binder that helps me keep track of which stores have the best deals on which items (like Amazon's subscription discount for dog food and toilet paper or Aldi's coconut oil). I also make a few easy simple things from scratch like peanut butter and salsa. We generally don't buy any already made food or freezer meals. One of my stores allows me to clip their coupons online and they automatically work when I use my phone number that it's saved under. We use one of those cash back apps for food we're buying anyway too. We don't own a TV at all because everything can be watched cheaper online and it's cheaper for our electric bill. Take the clothes to H&M to get a coupon or use online thrift shops to sell gently used items so you get some money back before parting with it. Anytime you shop online or go out, look for a coupon code or use a discounted gift card or do it through a cash back site.

Twenty-three & change I'm curious. What do you mean by it being less cost to your electricity by not having a tv and watching things online instead?
Do you watch it on you laptop, or do you watch it on a larger computer monitor that you connect to your laptop?

If you have a high rent or mortgage payment then exchange that for a high RV payment then you're not saving anything. The beauty of RVing is the ability to adjust your expenses from month to month, as long as you don't start off with a great deal of monthly debt.

We cut eating out to once a week with friends or family. We also cut unneccesary subscriptions, avoid buying new what we can get used, avoid buying what we can swap or borrow, and we bulk cook and prep at home and freeze what we don't eat in 2 days. There is mote, what I'd like to work on is clutter, energy usage, and walking more when we don't need to use gas.

Food wise I buy a lot of stuff that can be frozen so it doesn't go off. I'll make a large serving of a meal and freeze portions for the nights I don't want to cook.
I went through all my stuff and sold all my random decor stuff that I didn't particularly like or need. A lot I had in the cupboard waiting for a spot to put them.
I only get take out once a month as a treat.
I cancelled a lot of subscriptions and memberships that I didn't use that were costing money.

These are really great tips. I don't think people realize how much they REALLY spend. For a month my husband and I wrote down EVERYTHING we spent (every penny), and we were seriously amazed at how much we were spending! I have done all the things you suggested and we have been able to save so much more. I am like you, I only wear a select few pieces of jewelry, so there's no point to buy trendy pieces I won't wear! I have also started shopping at Goodwill, consignment shops and yard sales. You can find great things for a fraction of the cost! I have bought highend brands of clothing at Goodwill with the price tags still on! When you account for every penny spent you realize how much "oh, this is ONLY $5) adds up to at the end of the month!
My BIGGEST downfall is makeup. .......which is ridiculous considering the fact that I don't even wear it every day! But I'm trying......lol.

It’s amazing how you can easily spend close to $1000 a month on groceries, and yet just as easily spend a few hundred a month. I can easily spend a lot if I’m not careful. It just takes a little more creativity in the kitchen if I want to save.

You should walk around the grocery store with a calculator. I do it in my head and ame usually close whithin about $5. I don't drink alcohol, I don't do drugs, I don't wear makeup, I don't get mani-pedis, I don't get my hair professionally cut I don't buy fast fashion. I think a lot of these tips are for people who already have money. The biggest way to live successfully is to separate your NEEDS from your WANTS. Live below your means, save a little bit even though it may be $5 per month, pay off you smallest debt move on to the next biggest one etc. Don't buy on credit.

I have about 100 left to pay off and we have majorly cut back on eating out, drinking, and having junk food around. It's helped saving as well as helping weight management. I could definitely cut down my spending on makeup each month. I spend way too much on that! I think I'm also planning on cutting my Boxycharm subscription box for $21/month because it's not something I need.
Besides that, I feel we've gotten so much better at going out exponentially less (maybe every other week at most), eating at home more and making sure we cook enough for leftovers for quick meals, etc. That saves us lots of money! We also take advantage of UA-cam, Netflix, and books we have for entertainment and it's nice staying at home :) We also don't drink period. All we have in our fridge is a water filtered pitcher, mango OJ, milk, and almond milk. We also use coupons whenever we can for the grocery store we frequent and that actually saves us $10-$20 each trip!
I'm a new subscriber of yours going on a debt-free journey so videos like these are very encouraging and helpful, so thank you!

I love the savings videos! What really seems to sabotage me is that I'm chronically ill and when I'm in a flare especially, I really don't feel like standing to make food for even like five minutes. I try to make more than what I need, and make things I really like, so I can just reheat the second or third portion as one of my next meals if I don't feel super, but it can be difficult. Also if I have my parents or any friends over it's difficult because, while my apartment is centrally located and a great place to hang out, I may not feel like making dinner for people. Food in general is just the struggle for me. I try to be cognizant of what I'm eating and the money it's using, but it also has to work for my current reality, which is feeling like I had a fight with a bus and the bus won.

My brand of coffee, my peanut butter, and salad dressing or mayo. The rest I'm good with off brands. Lol. I have a Mercari account, and I'm getting ready to do some serious shoes, and bags downsizing. How many do you need? Not NEARLY as many as I have...I won't even say!!! Thanks for the tips. Stay safe, well and GOD bless you and your family.

The Little Things! They get me EVERY TIME. That's probably the one thing in this list that is a problem for me. I've pretty much already dealt with all the others.
When it comes to groceries, when I first started living on my own, I was still in high school and wanted to be careful with my money since I worked super hard to make enough and still make it to class full-time, I had this habit of keeping a notebook of lists (this was before cell phones, yeah) organized by store of all the foods I liked and what they cost at the stores, so I could shop more efficiently. it's been almost 20 years and I still do that to this day, except I use note apps in my phone for it, and I keep notes of the sales from the flyers there too. Then I can be sure to not spend more than I need to on any groceries or household items (you wouldn't believe how much cheaper my favorite dish sponges are at Walmart vs Target, for example). I'm also really big into the Cartwheel app and things like that, so I factor those discounts into my price comparisons as well.
This was a great list, thanks for sharing with us!

Enjoyed hearing your interesting tips! Can adhere to most of your simple suggestions. However, refuse to not eat out as it's one of my few social activities that I enjoy. Eat mostly @ inexpensive places. And occasionally take a sandwich from home or from the supermkt. along with a drink and visit a park.
Also enjoy a drink @ home with a friend before starting off for a restaurant. Or if I do want a drink out, always ask for ice cubes to "freshen up" the drink without asking for a costly 2nd.
Oftentimes, my friend & I split one meal, & have been known to split the 2nd "costly" beer as well.

I can't imagine wasting money on all those things! The only thing in that list I'm guilty of is too much take-out. I've never bought excess clothes or shoes, and I've never owned a designer purse in my life (I'm 65). Nor had satellite radio.
It's a good thing to rein in wasteful spending habits, particularly since I've watched your later videos a lot, and I know you're a much more moderate mom.

Already cut most on the list. However, I struggle with restaurant/take out/fast food/fast casual food. Big holes in my pocket. Like you, I have food in the house. I convinced myself the better calorie payout to justify this - yet, I'm losing weight, badly. I resigned to it being an addiction. It's a struggle.
    1. I avoid all autocharges except car insurance. No contracts if I don't have to. Not even my cell phone.
    2. Depends. Some brands have quality & taste better (my mom tried to convert me to aldi - fail): quaker oats & kraft american cheese (the latter I wait for the 2 for $4 sale). Others I simply buy based on what my set prices are: a foot long loaf of bread is $2 max.
    3. No paying for music, streaming, radio, albums, itunes
    4. I suck
    5. I suck for wanting a mixed drinks at restaurants from time to time. My deterrent is not drinking & driving. I don't drink at home except 1 bottle of spiked eggnog a year.
    6. I don't fall for fashion trends. I have a time lasting wardrobe. Rule: if item is really worn out, then I'll replace it once discarded. I do know the seasonal retail calendar when things go on sale. Also: no outlets - you "save" for less quality.
    7. I never cared for jewelry or perfume. 3 earrings. Few shoes: 6 oxfords of different colors, 2 flats, 1 boat shoes, 1 rain boots, 1 booties, 2 gym/running shoes, 1 clogs, 0 high heels. Some of my extra pairs are just backups sitting in my closet because women's shoes aren't constant from seasons or years. Perfume: 1 gifted. I don't wear perfume.
    8. Not a purse person. 2 clutches, one full size purse, one larger tote sized, 1 laptop bag. I also have a bunch of grocery totes from organic stores.
    9. I suck
    10. I don't think I suck. I don't buy useless knicknacks. I do sometimes buy things with utility when in hindsight I didn't need it as much as I thought I did. I do feel like I have too much stuff though.
