I always appreciated that Tony Kukoc never allowed his ego to take him to another team where he would certainly have been a starter. He was such an important piece to the Bulls.
The basketball played by the 90's Bulls was just so beautiful to watch. I am fortunate to have gone through my pre-teen and teen years during their run. The NBA was not and has never been the same after that team was broken up.
I agree and I can relate. Watching the 96 bulls was like watching a UA-cam video on how to play basketball. For me it was like, "this is how team sports are played at the highest level " . It was a magical time. It's crazy how back then we were looking forward to the future.

watched that entire decade as well as the era preceding it and theres no doubt in my mind that the 80s produced a far higher quality and more pleasing brand of basketball than the 90s had to offer...The 90s is what turned basketball from a "we" game into a "me" game, transformed it into a pulpit for the glorification of individuals...Almost everything thats wrong with the modern day game can be traced back to that decade. Best ever or not MJ long term wasnt good for the game fundamentally, but it was very good for business...
toni rodman mj pippen harper all played starter minutes..their 6th man was luc longley honestly...and then steve kerr and a bunch of meh bench guys...but sure
I remember visiting my grandparents for the first time in China during the summer of 1996. I was 8. China was very different back then, and the NBA was not nearly as popular there as it is now. But my grandma was a huge Bulls and Jordan fan, and religiously watched the few games that were broadcast on TV. It's cool to think how those 90s Bulls teams were so influential across different cultures and generations!
Here in the Philippines, Bulls games are played live in the morning. When it was playoffs, construction workers, truck drivers, students, and regular Joes would stop working, stop going to school etc.. to watch games.

At first I disagreed with this connotation that the 72-10 '96 Bulls were the greatest team of all time. Personally, I had the '87 Showtime Lakers as the GOAT team with just how seamless everyone seemed to be at every slot, every aspect of the game. Considering that only three players on the team averaged more than 12 PPG per game and even back then, they didn't really play pretty. Then I found a little statistic that made me balk (and they can be misleading). The team had a 72-10 record ... on a +13.0 Net Rating. Which sounds impressive on its own, but doesn't really blitz minds on team dominance for the season ... until I looked at the rest of the competition: '96 Sonics: +7.7 '96 Jazz: +6.9 '96 Spurs: +6.4 '96 Magic: +5.7 Can you imagine, being _on average_ being the worth of *Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal* at that tandem's height above the rest? 16-3 in the play-offs and being on the cusp of a sweep only to take the foot off the gas at 3-0 and being so lazy despite having both the best offense and defense in the league that season? Maybe they weren't as flashy or smooth as the Lakers or exemplified team basketball like the Celtics did, or even utter physical dominance like the Sixers, but the 72-10 Bulls tore it up, for real, and they didn't just make it look _good_ ... they made other teams look _bad._ When the chips go down, basketball is a sport, a competition ... and nothing says domination at making teams look like they're a Shaq and Penny tandem away from matching you on a good day. The 72-10 Bulls are the best team of all-time, and I hate admitting that.

Net rating impressive, however there are teams, that are very close to it. For example 2015-16 GSW with +13.0, but they lost in the finals. Based on bleacherreport ranking of best teams in NBA history, Chicago Bulls '96 are on second place, and the winner is GSW in 2016-17, which had the best post season net rating: "The Cleveland Cavaliers' Game 4 victory in the Finals was their only blemish in a 16-1 postseason. They were a whopping plus-230 over those 17 games, the best raw point differential for a single postseason in league history." And no, I'm not GSW fan, or anything else. I could agree about Chicago Bulls from '96 as the best team in NBA history, but mine favourite best team is Boston Celtics from 1985-86 season. (Yes, I'm huge Larry Bird fan :) )

They got the ring on top of the 72-10 regular season. Including playoffs their total record was 87-13. Only 3 losses in the playoffs, the greatest team and season ever. Better than 73-9 with no ring.

After the decline of the Chicago Bulls empire, I just couldn't fixate myself consistently watching other NBA teams. The energy and vibe of the game has been "tamed". It became a 3-point shooting game. The art and creativity of playing the games is...gone!

I remember watching those playoffs vs the Sonics, MJ was being focused like crazy, and still was able to perform, even tho I always felt like Dennis Rodman was the MVP of those Finals, don't get me wrong, I love MJ, yet Dennis had such key moments... The 96 Bulls was god-tier level team, they were so dominant that no one that can touch them during that era. And they brought fans around the world, MJ was and still is a legend in our part of the world.
I remember watching these years and thinking to myself "this ain't going to happen again in my lifetime". Joke NBA fans now a days with their obsessed stats have no idea what good basketball looks like and how dominance really felt like either.

The City Of Chicago Was Like New York At That Time I Grew Up In Chicago And When The Bulls Was On TV The Streets Was Empty And No One And I Mean No One Got Shot No Drug Was Being Sold And The Streets Was Pieceful Until The Game Was Over....
So for the few people not into sports in Chicago, the city became like West Europe for 2 hours and they could actually walk around like it was an entirely civil place, not a partially civil place.

What the last dance showed is how tough Michael was on his team to make them perform. He wanted to win so badly and knew he needed a team behind him to do it so he made them work like their lives depended on it. They became stars in part thanks to him. No surprise they crushed the other teams.
The highlights here alone lol you can see how difficult teams had it against the 96' Bulls! This is certainly a great video exposing alot of truth's just how truly dangerous that 96' Bulls teams really was; they could beat their opponents in so many different ways it's unbelievable

"Several guys who could guard positions 1-3" I think you're underselling it. Jordan and Harper could guard 1-3. Pippen could guard 1-4. Rodman could guard 1-5. Kukoc could guard multiple positions, too. Obviously not as well as the noted defensive greats on that list.
After a Pippen injury and Rodman ejection Jordan had to play power forward against Jadon Williams for 3 quarters. He did very well too. He could play PF if needed

'96 Bulls would DESTROY the 2015 Warriors, and the separation factor would be DEFENSE. Name anyone on the Warriors that could shut down Jordan, Pippen, & Kukoc. Now flip that question and ask could Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman shut down Curry, Thompson, and Green, and the answer is a laughable YES. Bulls would own the paint, they would out-steal, out-rebound, and out-block the Warriors by a mile. And therefore their transition game would kick in and dominate as well. Next variable: Could the Bulls match the Warriors in 3-ball??? I'll give "the edge" (just by a smidgen) to the Warriors. Kerr & Kukoc, and to a lesser degree, Jordan and Pippen, could make the the 3-ball game a very tight competition. But if the Bulls take as many attempts as the Warriors, it's probably pretty close to a wash.

And MJ improved his 3's in 90's, especially in his first 3 finals' series (so when it mattered most) he averaged over 40% from beyond the arc. But I agree telling Kerr/Kukoc/MJ/Pip are close to Steph/Klay in 3's - is a massive exaggeration. But under 90's rules Steph's and Klay's shots would be much more contested, especially by big guards like MJ, Pip, Harper and Rodman.
Kerr and Kukoc were who I was mentioning on a higher echelon for the Bulls. Jordan and Pippen had some great individual games pulling up from beyond the arc, but in general were less efficient, no doubt. But Kukoc in particular was a pioneer who played the modern style before there was a modern style. I'm saying that if they took as many attempts and played in today's NBA, I don't think they'd be hurting.

It's like he got better when he needed to turn it up a notch. Even during the games, i remember the Bulls playing from behind in the 1st, 2nd, and part of the third and/or 4th periods, ..then you'd see Michael make a move, then another, a 3, or a steal, or a dunk, then everyone would sit up, (if it was in an opposing arena, you could sense them getting a little uneasy), then another steal, or a block, a score, a few minutes later, the fans that had been cheering wildly, all game, had gone stunned silent, as the Bulls had pulled ahead. It was like, with his will he had taken all the energy out of the room. And suddenly, the Bulls had the momentum, Jordan was on fire, and everyone knew it.
The 96Bulls is the best team of all time or at least top 3.The only other teams in the conversation as far as I'm concerned is the 86 Celtics & the Magic Johnson/Kareem Lakers.But without a doubt the Bulls is definitely THE GREATEST PERIMETER DEFENSIVE TEAM EVER,plus they had that MJ guy lol.
@@luclarbi4739 In my opinion they was a top heavy team with KD.They had to give up so much of their bench that they wasn't that deep or physical of a team & if matched up with other historical teams they wouldn't be a top 5 team but maybe a top 10-15.I think that Mia team with LBJ & the Shaq\Kobe Lakers would give them problems because once you get pass KD they had the players to match up with everyone else but who on GS can stop Shaq or LBJ,Kobe,Wade in their primes or near their prime...We already seen that version of LBJ outplay KD in the Finals.

I'm a Jersey Boy through and through and grew up and still am a Bulls fan. It was so fun watching the 90's Bulls! The knew how to build a team and play together and trust the bench players. And they had beasts coming off the bench. No team in any era would beat the '96 Bulls in a 7 game series!
@@ktapreswreckd921v9 ur right but the 85-86 celts were different than the other editions because they added a healthy bill walton that year. walton puts them over the top. he was amazing when healthy and he was healthy in 86. the 86 celts put on a passing clinic. walton bird mchale parish front court is best ever. no doubt they would have beaten lakers that year. in 87 mchale played on a broken foot in the finals and walton injuries returned.

96 had superior depth with Kukoc being the big difference. MJ was at his peak in 92 but Pip was nowhere as good as he was in 96. Kerr/Harper were a wash with Pax/Hodges, Rodman is better then Grant & the regardless of the center you prefer it was pretty close. Kukoc just brought a dynamic the 92 team didn't have, he was a matchup nightmare & screwed up opposing teams defensive assignments.

Jordan wasn't getting knocked around the year you speak of, they were already at the top it was easy but they still got everybody best shot, I wouldn't say they better because of that, in theory yeah pippen was better leader but as far won't say die mentality that was 90-94...he was calmer more soft after that
For Jordan to have to go that entire summer after the Magic loss with the endless speculation about him "being done," must have been one of the most frustrating things in his life. However, that's part of what made him so great. When others would have caved, he just used it as motivation to come out stronger than ever. But you can't discount the addition of Rodman or the incredibly hungry bench they had, with Tony being the 6th man. I watched that entire season happen and that bench came through more times than I can count. There were many a night they outplayed other teams starters.

This team was awesome. 72 wins is tough to match. I think the 01 Lakers were very similar and could give them a run for their money - Shaq possibly being a difference maker. In the 80s you have some very good teams as well with Showtime Lakers, 86 Celts, and 83 Sixers. But it’s tough to compare eras- different rules, different shoes, different styles. Same with modern day Warrior teams - they could drop 3’s all day but might not being able to stop anyone inside.

For me...I do not know if they are the best of all time...but they are certainly the best basketball team I have ever seen play....because they played great team basketball...in ALL aspects and any style and any adjustments. They could play.period.
And if want your mind blown some more: Of the 10 losses, only 2 occurred with a full starting roster. 3 loses w/o Rodman, 3 w/o Longley, 1 w/o Harper, and 1 w/o Longley AND Rodman. THREE of these short-handed losses occurred by ONE point. ONE. To the Pacers, Raptors, and Hornets. 75-7 was extremely possible, and it could have been higher. Maybe 76-6 if Rodman played those four games?
And don't forget two of their losses were to the Seattle SuperSonics who they played in the finals the top team in the West and the top three offensive and defensive team that year
Mj was not in his prime when he came back. The peak mj is 88-93, when he came back he had lost a part of his athleticism and was not as fast as a young mj. BTM you gotta stop saying that. His shooting percentage was much lower than during his real prime
He might have lost a step, but his post up ability made up for it. He mastered the fadeaway and was unstoppable. It’s very tough to say MJ didn’t dominate when every NBA player knew no one was better than him.

the 86 rockets with a full roster would of beaten them..they lost their starting point guard before the playoffs aka mr. 15.5 and 9 a night john lucas because of drug use....had the league let him play they win it all...he did that in 32.5 minutes a night...imagine if he played 5-6 more minutes a game like he would in non blowouts in the playoffs hell 8 more which he would in the finals..he was a beast....that teams was perfect when healthy

I just turned 10 when these bulls were at their peak. I've grown up with Michael, and I cannot lie.....it was like rockstar then. He eclipses lebron in fame and skill. It was like the Beatles, Elvis vibes. People were so star struck. they fainted

The basketball played by the 90's Bulls was just so beautiful to watch. I am fortunate to have gone through my pre-teen and teen years during their run. The NBA was not and has never been the same after that team was broken up.
I agree and I can relate. Watching the 96 bulls was like watching a UA-cam video on how to play basketball. For me it was like, "this is how team sports are played at the highest level " . It was a magical time. It's crazy how back then we were looking forward to the future.

watched that entire decade as well as the era preceding it and theres no doubt in my mind that the 80s produced a far higher quality and more pleasing brand of basketball than the 90s had to offer...The 90s is what turned basketball from a "we" game into a "me" game, transformed it into a pulpit for the glorification of individuals...Almost everything thats wrong with the modern day game can be traced back to that decade. Best ever or not MJ long term wasnt good for the game fundamentally, but it was very good for business...

I remember visiting my grandparents for the first time in China during the summer of 1996. I was 8. China was very different back then, and the NBA was not nearly as popular there as it is now. But my grandma was a huge Bulls and Jordan fan, and religiously watched the few games that were broadcast on TV. It's cool to think how those 90s Bulls teams were so influential across different cultures and generations!

At first I disagreed with this connotation that the 72-10 '96 Bulls were the greatest team of all time. Personally, I had the '87 Showtime Lakers as the GOAT team with just how seamless everyone seemed to be at every slot, every aspect of the game. Considering that only three players on the team averaged more than 12 PPG per game and even back then, they didn't really play pretty. Then I found a little statistic that made me balk (and they can be misleading). The team had a 72-10 record ... on a +13.0 Net Rating. Which sounds impressive on its own, but doesn't really blitz minds on team dominance for the season ... until I looked at the rest of the competition:
'96 Sonics: +7.7
'96 Jazz: +6.9
'96 Spurs: +6.4
'96 Magic: +5.7
Can you imagine, being _on average_ being the worth of *Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal* at that tandem's height above the rest? 16-3 in the play-offs and being on the cusp of a sweep only to take the foot off the gas at 3-0 and being so lazy despite having both the best offense and defense in the league that season? Maybe they weren't as flashy or smooth as the Lakers or exemplified team basketball like the Celtics did, or even utter physical dominance like the Sixers, but the 72-10 Bulls tore it up, for real, and they didn't just make it look _good_ ... they made other teams look _bad._ When the chips go down, basketball is a sport, a competition ... and nothing says domination at making teams look like they're a Shaq and Penny tandem away from matching you on a good day.
The 72-10 Bulls are the best team of all-time, and I hate admitting that.

Because as you mentioned; that Magic team? Was STACKED. Sonics were STACKED. Even Philly was on the come up. That 96 season was incredible. And the Bulls were tearing it up. They def coulda swept Seattle, and Seattle was a stacked team. I do remember MJ having back and knee issues though heading into that finals. Along with Pip being beaten up as well. That’s why I think the let the foot off the gas. Started breaking down. MJ still had that added weight he gained with baseball. That’s why I actually think he and the Bulls were better the next season.

Net rating impressive, however there are teams, that are very close to it. For example 2015-16 GSW with +13.0, but they lost in the finals. Based on bleacherreport ranking of best teams in NBA history, Chicago Bulls '96 are on second place, and the winner is GSW in 2016-17, which had the best post season net rating:
"The Cleveland Cavaliers' Game 4 victory in the Finals was their only blemish in a 16-1 postseason. They were a whopping plus-230 over those 17 games, the best raw point differential for a single postseason in league history."
And no, I'm not GSW fan, or anything else. I could agree about Chicago Bulls from '96 as the best team in NBA history, but mine favourite best team is Boston Celtics from 1985-86 season. (Yes, I'm huge Larry Bird fan :) )

So for the few people not into sports in Chicago, the city became like West Europe for 2 hours and they could actually walk around like it was an entirely civil place, not a partially civil place.

What the last dance showed is how tough Michael was on his team to make them perform. He wanted to win so badly and knew he needed a team behind him to do it so he made them work like their lives depended on it. They became stars in part thanks to him. No surprise they crushed the other teams.

I think you're underselling it. Jordan and Harper could guard 1-3. Pippen could guard 1-4. Rodman could guard 1-5. Kukoc could guard multiple positions, too. Obviously not as well as the noted defensive greats on that list.
After a Pippen injury and Rodman ejection Jordan had to play power forward against Jadon Williams for 3 quarters. He did very well too. He could play PF if needed

'96 Bulls would DESTROY the 2015 Warriors, and the separation factor would be DEFENSE. Name anyone on the Warriors that could shut down Jordan, Pippen, & Kukoc. Now flip that question and ask could Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman shut down Curry, Thompson, and Green, and the answer is a laughable YES. Bulls would own the paint, they would out-steal, out-rebound, and out-block the Warriors by a mile. And therefore their transition game would kick in and dominate as well.
Next variable: Could the Bulls match the Warriors in 3-ball??? I'll give "the edge" (just by a smidgen) to the Warriors. Kerr & Kukoc, and to a lesser degree, Jordan and Pippen, could make the the 3-ball game a very tight competition. But if the Bulls take as many attempts as the Warriors, it's probably pretty close to a wash.

And MJ improved his 3's in 90's, especially in his first 3 finals' series (so when it mattered most) he averaged over 40% from beyond the arc. But I agree telling Kerr/Kukoc/MJ/Pip are close to Steph/Klay in 3's - is a massive exaggeration. But under 90's rules Steph's and Klay's shots would be much more contested, especially by big guards like MJ, Pip, Harper and Rodman.
Kerr and Kukoc were who I was mentioning on a higher echelon for the Bulls. Jordan and Pippen had some great individual games pulling up from beyond the arc, but in general were less efficient, no doubt. But Kukoc in particular was a pioneer who played the modern style before there was a modern style. I'm saying that if they took as many attempts and played in today's NBA, I don't think they'd be hurting.

It's like he got better when he needed to turn it up a notch. Even during the games, i remember the Bulls playing from behind in the 1st, 2nd, and part of the third and/or 4th periods, ..then you'd see Michael make a move, then another, a 3, or a steal, or a dunk, then everyone would sit up, (if it was in an opposing arena, you could sense them getting a little uneasy), then another steal, or a block, a score, a few minutes later, the fans that had been cheering wildly, all game, had gone stunned silent, as the Bulls had pulled ahead. It was like, with his will he had taken all the energy out of the room. And suddenly, the Bulls had the momentum, Jordan was on fire, and everyone knew it.

@@luclarbi4739 In my opinion they was a top heavy team with KD.They had to give up so much of their bench that they wasn't that deep or physical of a team & if matched up with other historical teams they wouldn't be a top 5 team but maybe a top 10-15.I think that Mia team with LBJ & the Shaq\Kobe Lakers would give them problems because once you get pass KD they had the players to match up with everyone else but who on GS can stop Shaq or LBJ,Kobe,Wade in their primes or near their prime...We already seen that version of LBJ outplay KD in the Finals.

They struggled in the playoffs going 6 games with SA & almost lost to OKC before blowing a 3-1 lead to Cle(yes I know Draymond got suspended & Bogut & Iggi both got hurt but if you're a 73 win team you still should have been able to close the series out).They remind me of some of those Nash Suns teams,expensive offense & a great regular season but fail in the playoffs...They're not even in the conversation as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a Jersey Boy through and through and grew up and still am a Bulls fan. It was so fun watching the 90's Bulls! The knew how to build a team and play together and trust the bench players. And they had beasts coming off the bench. No team in any era would beat the '96 Bulls in a 7 game series!
The 1985-86 Celtics is the best team of all time. It was the NBA at its golden age and this team was dominant.
They were a great team. But another great team beat them twice in the 80's. The Showtime Lakers.
@@ktapreswreckd921v9 ur right but the 85-86 celts were different than the other editions because they added a healthy bill walton that year. walton puts them over the top. he was amazing when healthy and he was healthy in 86. the 86 celts put on a passing clinic. walton bird mchale parish front court is best ever. no doubt they would have beaten lakers that year. in 87 mchale played on a broken foot in the finals and walton injuries returned.
How can you say that when the Bulls won 72 and only lost 10?

@@richardjackson5670 because of the Sixers, Pistons, Bucks, Rockets, Lakers, Cavs, and the rest of the teams of that era. All those teams where beasts and the Celtics on that season dominated them all. The Warriors won 73 games and you can't say that team was better than the 96 Bulls.

96 had superior depth with Kukoc being the big difference. MJ was at his peak in 92 but Pip was nowhere as good as he was in 96. Kerr/Harper were a wash with Pax/Hodges, Rodman is better then Grant & the regardless of the center you prefer it was pretty close. Kukoc just brought a dynamic the 92 team didn't have, he was a matchup nightmare & screwed up opposing teams defensive assignments.
@@rick5976 Craig Hodges brought more entangibles than kukoc, Grant was an enforcer his length mattered if rodman was a 93 Grant would be 91 but he could score way more in the post off the dribble & mid range go ✓,, after two beatings by the pistons both pippen & jordan were unstoppable they were both playing like mad men ferocious, pippen dogged magic that year, nah that team was on a mission could not be stopped unless you killed them😁👈
Jordan wasn't getting knocked around the year you speak of, they were already at the top it was easy but they still got everybody best shot, I wouldn't say they better because of that, in theory yeah pippen was better leader but as far won't say die mentality that was 90-94...he was calmer more soft after that

For Jordan to have to go that entire summer after the Magic loss with the endless speculation about him "being done," must have been one of the most frustrating things in his life. However, that's part of what made him so great. When others would have caved, he just used it as motivation to come out stronger than ever. But you can't discount the addition of Rodman or the incredibly hungry bench they had, with Tony being the 6th man. I watched that entire season happen and that bench came through more times than I can count. There were many a night they outplayed other teams starters.

I think the 01 Lakers were very similar and could give them a run for their money - Shaq possibly being a difference maker.
In the 80s you have some very good teams as well with Showtime Lakers, 86 Celts, and 83 Sixers. But it’s tough to compare eras- different rules, different shoes, different styles. Same with modern day Warrior teams - they could drop 3’s all day but might not being able to stop anyone inside.

I agree about the bench-but the 86 Celtics would really struggle with the Bulls defense. Greatest defensive backcourt of all time. As always, it’s impossible to really know🤷♂️

For me...I do not know if they are the best of all time...but they are certainly the best basketball team I have ever seen play....because they played great team basketball...in ALL aspects and any style and any adjustments. They could play.period.
And if want your mind blown some more: Of the 10 losses, only 2 occurred with a full starting roster. 3 loses w/o Rodman, 3 w/o Longley, 1 w/o Harper, and 1 w/o Longley AND Rodman. THREE of these short-handed losses occurred by ONE point. ONE. To the Pacers, Raptors, and Hornets. 75-7 was extremely possible, and it could have been higher. Maybe 76-6 if Rodman played those four games?
And don't forget two of their losses were to the Seattle SuperSonics who they played in the finals the top team in the West and the top three offensive and defensive team that year

He might have lost a step, but his post up ability made up for it. He mastered the fadeaway and was unstoppable. It’s very tough to say MJ didn’t dominate when every NBA player knew no one was better than him.

the 86 rockets with a full roster would of beaten them..they lost their starting point guard before the playoffs aka mr. 15.5 and 9 a night john lucas because of drug use....had the league let him play they win it all...he did that in 32.5 minutes a night...imagine if he played 5-6 more minutes a game like he would in non blowouts in the playoffs hell 8 more which he would in the finals..he was a beast....that teams was perfect when healthy

Defensively their length is amazing. The Bulls could reach every pass and chase down almost every shot. Their defense is why they'd beat GS. That and His Airness.
