Peter Parker 9 is terrific. Its the one I'm missing.

10:47 It’s tough. Some creations I’m more accepting of continuing to enjoy, some I can’t get past. I bought every Bill Cosby record in my youth (literally every release), and now they’re in a box in the back of my storage unit, and I can’t see playing them ever again.

I remember reading that Daredevil's fingertips were sensitive enough to detect the different intensity of radiation which each colour gives off (and that he could read the imprint that the typeface made on a printed document, though this was in a 1970s letter page, before word processing and laser printing).
I agree with Richard, the text is born from its composer but, once it's handed over to an audience (even an audience of one), it stands outside that composer. As I used to teach my English students, we assess the text for its literary, poetic, cinematic or whatever merits, we're not here to judge the composer. Understanding what was happening in the creator's life when he/she created the text may help us understand that text better but ultimately, it's the text we have to address.
Richard, the movie is "Wanted: Dead Or Alive" from 1986; Hauer plays the descendant of Josh Randall, played by Steve McQueen in the original 1958 tv series of the same name.
Not to belabour this point but your $4.99 comic costs $8.99 here in Australia. Or the equivalent of half a dozen eggs and a packet of bacon, which is breakfast for nearly a whole week. So to me and many fellow fans here comics have become, if not a luxury, then certainly an indulgence.

"In France since the 1950s -- following the lead of Roland Barthes, and later, of Michel Foucault -- and in the United States since the 1970s, literary criticism has set itself the aim of erasing the author as an entity and treating the "text" as a bloodless, authorless orphan." Richard Tillinghast on Robert Lowell. As a writer and teacher for over 50 years, I completely agree with Tillinghurst's argument that removing the creator from the work of art ("text" itself is such a bloodless, dehumanized word) is disrespectful to the creator and to the humans who respond to the creation. We're not robots, not yet, and some of us aren't French linguistic theorists either. I agree with you and Richard, however, that the art can be considered on its own terms, but not separate from the artist at all. In fact, in most cases, the art is the best aspect of that person, and shows how the artist can transcend his flaws. Either way, I don't think Gaiman and his work merit serious attention.

@@TT-fq7pl I remember being introduced to Barthes when I took Linguistics at university in the early 80s. The discipline of Linguistics really expanded my thinking and how I approached the concept of language.

@@charliedogg7683 I have no trouble with that. My problem with theory, in general, is that it became more important than the art being theorized over. As a result, I chose not to pursue an academic career, and instead became a poet and novelist. Thirty years later, I ought to be grateful to those French guys for confirming my love of art over criticism. But I'd still rather watch Australian breakdancing than read theory. To each his own.

I also have books graded for display. That said, I think the real benefit to grading books is liquidity. But liquidity doesn't equal value; it's entirely possible that the price differential between graded and raw is so small that grading isn't financially sensible.

I even have a CBCS 9.8 that has graders notes on it. I love how much more transparent they are about their process.

I can totally see both sides of the coin of "separating the art from the artist". For me it's about not wanting to reward the artist for poor behavior in terms of royalties but I could otherwise separate them if there isn't such an arrangement.

thanks for comments about the advantages of slabbing/grading a comic book. I am a total RAW collector however. Yes, there are advantages to getting one or two special comics slabbed, but slabbing most comics (to me) is like going to a movie theatre to see a popular movie and stopping at the door to admire the movie poster. You then never go inside to see the movie. You miss so much.

I actually bought Western Team-Up #1 off the stands! Still have it but haven't looked at it or read it in decades. I need to pull it out and take a look! Mine might be quite high grade.

Love the show gentlemen! As for the introduction of Latino characters into the MCU, aren't you forgetting about Tenoch Huetra's Sub-mariner in Black Panther 2!? Also, issues of Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man (we referred to the title as Peter Parker back in the day, not Spectacular Spider-man) through the early 1980's were some of the best Spider-man stories going! Loved those runs!

I love Sandman. More specifically, Death is one of my very favorite characters in comics. I do agree with Richard that one can separate the art from the artist but I'm not going to be supporting any future projects from Gaiman unless some new info comes to light supporting his version of the events. That article was horrible. As a man in his 40s, I didn't have many heroes left and it sucks to have lost another

So, is there any actual evidence or convictions related to any of the Gaiman stuff? I think it’s really important at this point in history to insist that there is actual evidence before lighting someone on fire. A person saying something happened is simply not enough and I feel like I’m in the twilight zone that everyone doesn’t also think this.

The whole Gaiman situation is so disheartening. My daughters grew up watching his movies: “Stardust” and “Coraline”. I have read a good bit of his stuff and I’m currently enjoying the comic book version of his novel “Anansi Boys” by Dark Horse Comics.

Great show guys!!!! Love the return of Richard's wrinkley bags! I always heard that John Byrne didn't actually want to do Alpha Flight so that's the reason he offed the Guardian or Vindicator or Major Mapleleaf. Can you confirm this? Richard- Did or do you like KMFDM? I had a room mate in college who played that CD all the time. That was my indoctrination into Industrial Goth. Hope to see you guys in Anaheim in a couple of weeks!!! 😁😁

I'm also very upset about Giaman. I didn't pick up Sandman until the late #20's, but read all the earlier trades. It's one of the best comic book runs ever. "Good Omens" is one of my all-time favourite books. And I loved the Sandman and American Gods tv series. If he does get convicted of these heinous acts, will that all change. Not for me, why would it? The stories are still the same. Will it make Giaman a horrible human being, most definitely!
Sill loving the show, guys! ❤
(trying to lighten it up a bit here... 😏)

I've never read any of Neil Gaiman's stuff so the news doesn't bother me. However, as a big sports fan I think I'm more used to these things since every sport is littered with players that have committed some crime but still get to play because they have some talent. To watch sports sometimes you just have to push the "off the field" stuff out the brain and just watch the game.

😢 so sorry to say this BUT after this particular episode I might have more respect for Alan Moore than I do Richard. Alan backed his point of view and perspective, held fast, and Richard thinks that if you're a BAD person yet produce "good" things it's ok to follow and support said person. 😢

  • @TT-fq7pl
    @TT-fq7pl 13 днів тому

I always enjoy your show. But in this episode, I don't think you actually answered the question about slabbing. The person likely knows the reasons for slabbing; he wanted to know if the absence of slabbing would change the way you collect. That's an interesting question. For example, would you buy so many modern comics if you couldn't get them in 9.8? And would you buy fewer vintage comics if you could only buy them raw? Also, as someone who likes the comic part of comic books, and therefore the nostalgia, I simply don't understand the appeal in "ultra violence." As storytelling goes, the constant resorting to darkness, edginess, violence, gritty realism, etc, just seems so easy and, frankly, sentimental (oh yes, our culture sentimentalizes violence, though that topic is rarely discussed). Which is why I always prefer to read a Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge than to see yet another current violent incarnation of a superhero title on the screen. I'm in the minority, of course, but just this once (I promise) I'm allowing myself to be the vocal minority!

So I have a minor nit to pick with Richard on grading. The idea that you need to get the books graded to protect them doesn't seem necessarily legit. A good Mylar bag and toploader (with painters tape!) will do as much or more to protect the comic, and do so without you having to ship your book through the mail (twice) and other risky behaviors. And of course you then still have the ability to open it up as desired. The other items are valid though, if you're really concerned about grade and restoration. I'd argue that the problem with grading is not that it exists, but only that it is used for the wrong types of books sometimes. It should be something one does with Golden Age and Silver Age books fairly exclusively.
