What Is The Cheapest V12 Ferrari in the World Actually Like? Ferrari 550

- The Ferrari 550 Maranello was a legendary return to form for Ferrari, bringing back the V12 front engine GT with huge success. It is now regarded as one of the finest and last of the manual Ferraris and has shot up in value.. this example however is very cheap.. why? and does it still drive well or is it hiding some serious problems?

So in the end......you can't afford it, and he doesn't want to sell it anyway! Bit of a non story!
I think he would sell to the right buyer. I.e someone who realises this car will have issues and isn’t going to waste his time. I didn’t want him being deluged with time wasters and dreamers but if someone is genuinely interested and knows what they are getting I could put them in touch.
In any case I disagree on it being a non story, perhaps for you but for me and I hope many others it’s is interesting to see a very cheap 550 and hear the story behind it.
Thank you for spearing me time
Not at all. It's a very common story, well-told at that.
I for one enjoyed the whole story and love the car as well. Even with its faults and mechanical needs. She is easily a daily driver for me. The question is.....Now which couch do I turn over and shake out 40,000 pounds of cash to buy her 😉
Have to say i think it will be an absolute money pit.
Yes the current owner is Not selling because it is a great reliable car, he KNOWS it has a problem a BIG one and would rather Not be part of it!! IF it faultless???? The current owner would never let it out of his sight!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree. Massive money pit. Best off buying a decent one. There is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari.
I just don't get why they are so highly rated. This era of ferrari look so dated inside. I agree it will be an absolute money pit.
@@Bluescooby1 because on the outside it’s stunning and fantastic to drive
@@johnmandragon4830 Correction, nothing more expensive than a cheap Ferrari 😂
To Put things in perspective with the risk vs reward of this, Harry Metcalf just did a video on a 12 month old landrover Defender, the thing rattles like a plastic bits box and they want 60, SIXTY thousand dollars for him to keep it after 12 months of a loan out of abusing it, get a loan, buy this and if it goes wrong you can always part it out to fer parts for atleast half your investment, and also be mindful of the computers on these, they literally have two of everything, and they dont like being jumped, so when the battery runs dead, just replace the battery with a spare, or charge it separate of the car
like do that and drive it regularly, and outside of the fuel pump and its filter this thing should be fine, the thing being those got discontinued, atleast on the 456 and Tyler Hoovers mechanic actually did a cheap fix on that of using like a Hyndai part of all things
same thing on the 360, so it is of this era with that problem, but generally 99% of the problems come from sitting, and the things got a mispainted panel there with the quarter
if you dont care just buy and drive, as I'd sooner spend, well not even 60K quid to have a geniune rebirth of the daytona than a stupid land rover defender that when the world goes right and people leave the EU and tell them to stuff their enviromental bollucks where the sun dont shine
will only be 15 thousand pounds anyways.
Fun Fact - the alloys WERE magnesium, but the originals cracked - so they were all replaced with aluminium ones. The original mag items are now considered unsafe, but unscrupulous sellers do try and sell them on
would the original magnesium wheels be worth more in today's market than the aluminium ones?
@@drink4711
No because they are unsafe and shouldn't be used. Like the man just said.
What would you know jayem... 🤔 sounds like your a youtube star or something 😆 🤣 😂
🤜🤜✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Early 550s came with magnesium alloy wheels, but these were replaced under warranty by Ferrari!
@@alphatrion100 I asked because magnesium wheels would have been far more expensive than aluminium ones to begin with. Perhaps they are more desirable or collectible exactly because they were banned?
A ropey old Ferrari V12 is still a Ferrari V12 as per the owner's inclination to hold onto it.
As a layman the paintjob is poor - makes your average 90’s red vauxhall astra look concours.
Paint fade is one thing, complete mismatch is another! :)
Ferrari 550 - how many times havent we looked & dreamt on the classifieds for one?
That drivers door would only match the rest of the car through rose tinted glasses. 😉.
You can see the bodged panel repairs a mile off
Walk away my friend...all that glitters is not gold!
50 shades of pink.
I can't live without Air Con, and whilst I'm absolutely no expert, if I was told that AC would be circa £10k to fix I wouldn't be surprised.
Hope it gets further restored as time goes by
I'll tell you the same I told my best mate before he bought a Alfa Gulia GTAm
"if you need somebody to talk you out of it, you're talking to the wrong guy!"
That's a beater Ferrari for sure. Mismatched paint, broken A/C, one speed wipers, what else? He may as well keep it and drive the wheels off of it.
As soon as you walked around the car, Jack, I knew there was DS rear damage (at the very least)... paint doesn't match up well. Interesting car and if it eventually does go, it would be a fun daily if you can piss away 40 grand on an old, V12 daily. LOL
None of the panels on that car look to be the same colour. The plastic bumpers you can forgive but the rest of it...
Air in brake system... "No time to fix it"! Mad, especially on such a car.
Glad you got a run out in a V12. Buying it would have been like having 2 Italian mistresses!
Did you get a Golf GTI - Have I missed a video?! 🙏
I wouldn't touch it. It seems good because of the price but with water damage and all of the other things that have happened you know there is going to be so much more to this car. Simple problems turn out more complicated and expensive and being a Ferrari its all going to get far more expensive than you think. The bodywork was horrid and the interior dash issues were going to be more expensive than suggested.
No such thing as a 'bargain' Fezzer, let alone a v12, mate! I ran a 456M GT (2002) for a few years - dream car, in my favourite Verde Zeltweg with an absolute dream of an engine (same as the 550 Maranello), which is bulletproof. Stuff you don't want to have to think about are 20 year replacement bits - one example can serve: quoted £2k for the 2 short pipes on the transmission oil cooler (didn't even know it had one! Got them fabricated for £500...); suspension (did you try the Sport flip switch - it made a huge difference!); don't talk about wiring (had back and forth with Maranello, who eventually admitted there were 'differences in the cars' looms... so "non possiamo fare niente..."; just everything o these is aging... Happily moved mine on five year's back, and agree with an FOC lady who said "they're like boats - the second best day in your life is the day you finally own a v12, but the best ..." etc.! That Dino 308GT4 is the way to go. Preferably in Giallo Fly, or Verde Germoglio ;-)
Bringing a bucketload of reality to a YT fantasy world, thanks for sharing your experience.
Why not to sort out the issues if £28k in profit?
Indeed.
What could possibly go wrong?!
Seriously though - could be the purchase that takes your channel to the next level... look at Hoovie's Garage.
I have to agree with those comments about there being no such thing as a ‘cheap’ Ferrari. Even viewed on the screen of an iPad, the car just looks ‘edgy’, the rear bumper out of alignment, and virtually every panel a different shade of red…and that’s before you get onto the interior cosmetics and all the stuff that’s not working properly. I’d give it a very wide berth, personally.
Well it's not £40k really as it's not for sale is it...looks like a money pit anyway, once you're done with the repairs it will owe you more like £50k (IF you got it for £40k) and it will never be worth top dollar. You're always better off buying something nicer to begin with.
Always the case, buy the best you can afford, and if this condition Ferrari is all you can afford, then don't buy it.
Great story. I think the poor old car needs a proper classy personal number plate to rid the demons rather than the pauper Irish ones it's had in the past.
Vanity plates tell you far more about the owner than the car !
Jack; be sensible!! Get it checked!!!!!!!!!!! By a PROPER MECHANIC!!!!!!!!!!!! You already own a Ferrari that needs MONEY SPENT ON IT!!!! IE the the engine!!!! Do you really need another lemon???? IF it Cheap???? There is a good reason for that, ie the current owner knows of a big problem and with fuel prices in the UK he has decided to off load it and buy an EV/hybrid.
Hummm. That rear driver side wheel arch doesn’t look right. Looks like it’s sitting low and skewed and bumper join isn’t sitting correctly. Steering geo may therefore be out
Back in 1995, I p/x my 308GTS for a nearly new 348TS. It looked mint, but later transpired it had been kerbed / dropped in pot hole or something; I had to have all rear suspension replaced as whilst it drove “ok” most of the time , on the limit it was skittish and in rain whoa, it just felt dangerous.
Lesson learned; like my wife with PMT , there is very fine line between everything looking gorgeous and benign and a volcanic eruption of pain and anguish 😲
TBH, I’m surprised the owner is advertising this as basically it’s been an boarder line insurance fraud… unless of course he had an agreed value and they didn’t inspect car prior to providing cover.
5:13 thought for a second he was gonna drive it through the back of the barn :)
We're happy, of course, to get you in as much trouble as possible... ;)
Don't buy it even if it's forsale, it has got four more cylinders to go wrong! There are lots of faults, mostly minor, not the aircon they'll be expensive to fix. I suspect that the airbags went off, were they replaced? Maybe it hasn't got any. It'll co a fortune to fix everything.
YES - new Ferrari content for the channel. Lets hope it will bring new viewers.
Good things not cheap, cheap things not good.
I'm in a minority but I've always liked the 456 much more, and good ones with manual trans cost about $50K USD here in the Disunited States. This is a good find...but those headlights look like a Toyota to me.
Any links to good 456 manuals for sale in the US for $40K?
Completely agree.Personally I prefer the design of the 456 to the 550 too. A 612 equally more desirable.
I ran 456’s in period - wonderful cars especially in M form and all manuals - auto is horrible
I have a LaFerrari that I will let you have for....100,000 pounds....no, wait, I decided to keep it.
Jack, FFS run a mile. That car has got more stories in it than Barbara Cartland. 1. Look at the MOT history. What kind of loving enthusiast takes a car for an MOT with shredded tyres? It tells you there are problems with either geometry or lack of love so what else has been shortcut? 2. What car enthusiast drives the car 200 miles in a year? 3. Who would sign off a two tone paint job, it should have been completely repainted. 4. The DVLA don't even recognise the number plate PIL 6533 so what other mysteries lurk? 4. It takes no time at all to bleed the brakes and no car loving person would not get the air con fixed, particularly when the cabin is so small. When are you going to stop digging mate? I feel almost as sick as when you kept chucking money away on the other Ferrari! It's only because I care!
Totally agree...it’s a nail with more problems than you think
A fair few warning signs there.
As for the reg check, I am not sure just how the DVLA site works. If I try my car's old reg, which it had from new and was on when I bought it used, it doesn't return a hit anymore. It used to when I checked it out when I bought the car, but now I have changed the plate only the current one comes back with the car's details.
Only a true Petrol Head would understand.... You bought a cheap, dodgy Ferrari, the only problem free drive of which was the one where it drove you to distraction and the edge of dispair, and you ask if you should perhaps buy another?... Yes of course! 😁
oooh so close.....but seems like you may have been saved by the owners change of heart..
This Ferrari looks as if it is heading for a full restoration, especially if the owner is not really on top of basic maintenance (HVAC, interior...). It came with enthusiastic reviews in period.
These cars have a tubular steel chassis with a Feran aluminium sandwich body. I have no idea how easy this is to repair (properly) but Ferrari no longer use this.
Magnesium wheels have a life of perhaps 5 years. There are reasons why they are not more widely used.
Caveat emptor.
I got one about a year ago and I drove it once, its been living ever since at the Ferrari Dealer workshop getting unbroken, only to break again in a perpetual cycle. You would be better off in a 612 Scag instead, which are far more reliable.
I could listen to those wonderful gear box clicks all day.
What a gorgeous car!😍
The 550 is one of my favorite Ferraris along with the 355
You have the best happy smile and happy persona in UA-cam Autos.
I had a 95' Taurus SHO w/5 speed manual that was a "salvage" title here in the US that I scored cheaply at the time. It was a brilliant car for the time I had it, the repair was of high quality and you'd have never known it was in an accident. I suspect the damage was very light, but the hood was god awful expensive for the SHO version because it was an aluminum one piece stamping(unlike normal Taurus's) so it was "totaled" by the insurance company and someone scooped it up and fixed it to turn a small profit off of me, which I was fine with as it was done right and I still got it for a "song" at the time according to KBB.
I would not touch it with a barge pole
Blessing in disguise Jack , I think you dodged an expensive bullet.
Ride height at the back doesn't look right.Run for the hills!
I love this new format of going to look at a car that we all want but that is just too cheap. Then honestly appraising it and revealing it’s state of jeopardy! Great work Jack.
kind of reminded me of that Top Gear challenge to buy an Italian exotic for cheap. That didn't turn out well.
Jack, Could you do an honest review of a 2010/11/12 range Rover sport SDV6HSE please? I went to look at a few at the weekend and they just are absolute money pits again and the quality of the plastics and external fittings are all very poor and fading unlike my 17-year-old BMW. Basically everything goes at 100,000 miles I reckon you’re better off spending 20 grand on one as likely to spend 8000 on it over three years anyway… I have no idea what sort of person would spend that sort of money on a vehicle that’s gonna cost him more than the current heating price rises! If you’re a well-off person you’re not gonna be looking at 12 grand range Rover sport!
@@gnuttz1972 why ask for a review of a vehicle that is a known money pit? Rangeys are well known for requiring huge repair bills. CarWow recently did a report on the vehicles requiring the most expensive repairs and RR was top of the heap.
@@johnandrews3568 Just thought it would make interesting content for Jack and an eye-opener for a lot of people
@@gnuttz1972 i'd rather see Jack steer clear of SUVs and stay focused on unusual cars and sports cars
Magari aveva pure scritto "no perditempo" nell'annuncio XD
Of course buy it!!!! It will make amazing content.
Ferrari is Italian for train wreck. Run away!
ike a 928 Porsche and 850 BMW the price of replacement parts will put you in the poor house
Looks like it's been hit on the drivers rear.
I thought a 550 was joining number 27 Jack!...... Maybe in the future buddy! Nothing I could think of car wise could top that 550 for £40! Millionaire looks and performance for pretty much entry level BMW money!
4:39 waiting for a football to come over the fence and hit the car :)
Not as fun to watch, but an alternative is to dig a deep hole and start throwing money down it.
Or just give it to me :)
Very cool car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Aston v12 sounds way better
I hope all the carpets and trim (in the boot too) including any sound deadening panels that got effected by the water damage were replaced as well as the inside being chemically cleaned, as this would be why the car got written off a second time. Flood water damage contains sewage and the bacteria that this introduces into the car can be a major health hazard going forward, hence why it got written off. These 550s have not aged well, unlike the 308 GT4 Dino...
Hope you're bank balance is very very healthy, just because its a Ferrari just means that the bills are going to be huuuge.
Bit of a shame it looks so similar to a Toyota Supra
There's a downside to a non-stock exhaust on a 550. See Harry's video.
Shame, would be a good addition to the channel…..
Maybe JayEmm can help.
Yeah buy it!Manual gearbox snick from gear to gear,Go kart handling, tail out action a throttle prod away.Whats not to like?
The constant expense trying to keep these old cars running reliably. Just look at Jack's videos on his 308....
@@grahamtricker4103 and JayEmm referring to his 550 as Judas... We still haven't heard why yet...
I don't like 550s all that much because *ahem* they have the STUPID Ferrari smile
But you'd be a dummy to pass that over even if on paper it's a flooded, side-swiped, mended cheaply....aging V12 Ferrari. How much it'll put you ahead in the game I dunno but the 308 worked out *really* well for you Jack so I'd love to see what you'd make of the 550. Doesn't sound like too much of a nightmare project either.
Aaand it's a GT. And if it's working properly it can do 200MPH and take you across Europe.
It could also be used everyday if you love changing tires as Harry Metcalfe pointed out. To me it's everything the Daytona should be in a way and I think you'll look back on it in regret in how much these will appreciate because for a generation....I reckon this will be the next Daytona and the last worthy V12 manual.
456s require valve adjustments, this doesnt. 575s are rare and according to Chris Harris sans Fioranno pack "sh*t"...599s are a non starter.
550 is a good number. A fine vintage.
This could end up being "the keeper" if you do go through with it.
Yeh buy for 40 spend another 20/30++ you will be the proud owner of possibly the most storied 550 in the worrrrrrllld which would still be worth 40/50K...because you can buy a mint one for 75/80K...now IF the mint ones become 150K again this thing might be worth 60K...thing is a man must know his limitations, so I ask you do you feel lucky punk? Do ya? Just look at what jaym spent on a goodun....even ratarossa would think twice ! Thanks for the laughs Jack Lol
It's a bit of a wrong 'un but that means 10 grand can be spent stripping and repainting a proper colour. 550/575's look like an old Supra in red. Black, blu Pozzi, Scuro or Silverstone dark metallic green.....whatever. As you say, it could do with a body job anyway. These are a proper Ferrari to me - I've no interest in any of the V8's since the 328.
I have said this before…but you look like the secret love child of Rick Stein and Julian Assange 😜
😁😁😁
😂
I do dream of buying a second car. Ferrari cost of ownership and brittle puts me off.
Current thoughts are :- Aston Vantage, Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type.
It's an indulgent luxury, of course I don't "need" one of these cars.
these cars here in California where selling for $55k all day just 6 years ago now they want over $120k for a rough example they don't look that pretty either A Maserati Granturismo or even better a 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish is much cheaper and much better looking than this thing .
40.000 is extremely expensive for a car that you can only put on display. Driving it is very hard and a waste of petrol. The engine is not suited for modern traffic, produces too much noise and leaves clouds of CO2. Grow up, please.
Appeal of these eludes me. Interior is shoddy even when in good condition and the exterior looks more like a Toyota Supra than a classic Ferrari. Engine is no doubt great. Rest of the car, bit of a lash up. Typical Ferrari, really. So many cars that would be preferable to spend £40,000 on.
This was the 550 Maranello to have... the Prodrive GTS. I remember seeing them racing back in the day - Colin McRae made his GT racing debut in one - and the sound was incredible. ua-cam.com/video/tJkJsEWOMu4/v-deo.html
I will NEVER EVER get used to the fact that the driver side is on the right. I would always tend to open the door on the left (and wrong) side.
That is fourty five years of getting used to driving in right side traffic.
Actually iI drove antique Army trucks with steering on the right side and in Asia I was driving cars in left side traffic many years back. But I am conditionned otherwise.
Fabulous car - but it wouldn’t have been worth you buying it. As you say, Jayemm has one and so the value for your channel would have had to have been something different - like it going wrong, and you repairing it - the trials and tribulations to make for good viewing!! Trouble is that this car Just looks too reliable for that. How is that for reverse/perverse logic!
Not me , I am an interrior- fetishist that absolutely HATES worn interiors .
Bodyissues are mostly " easy" to repair , an interior restoration is often verry laborintensive and horribly expensif .
Try to replace a damaged dashboard or headliner for example , a nightmare !
I thought you were going to talk yourself into buying that mess. Always run away from an ill maintained Ferrari. There is no-love from the owner.
What’s the worst that could happen? You could probably sell for the same money if it was a dog and it would increase your subscribers. Effectively it would pay for itself.
No! Stop buying Ferraris! 😂
I agree with Jay Leno. Ferrari's are overpriced and overrated. Sure there cool 'cause it's a Ferrari, but how much is that name worth? And don't get me started on old production cars which were sold as afterthoughts in order to race.
Only £40k? Why not buy 3?
Meanwhile I just bought a car and am driving it daily for 0.006425% of that.
It's a gorgeous car, was my dream car at one point. Needs someone who really cares about restoring it and doing it right, and they'll need considerable funds to do so, but still cheaper than a brand new Ferrari I have no doubt!
If you're struggling with the 40 grand in the first place, that car would have landed you in the bankruptcy courts.
Why not donate to and help out at your local food bank instead? And if your reaction to that idea is " fuck off " (that would be my reaction) then I am well up for the idea of seeing how many camshafts it takes to choke a Reds Mogg.
It's a great smoker for the money. It will never be worth much more given the history. Best just to enjoy it, as is. You could make good money breaking it at some point for the parts.
Ohhhh maaannnn I was thinking you would make a big score with that purchase. Oh well, maybe some day. But you DO own a Ferrari 😁
The categories have now changed as you probably know but a salvage vehicle will be cheaper than a 'mint' vehicle. I did notice some body issues, passenger door alignment not quite right and the other bodywork you pointed out. However don't be put off by a write off if the work is done well then there is nothing to worry about. Also you can get the salvage title removed with a special inspection the cost is around £200 pounds but this is not well published. Finally although you know the history it would be worth doing a check on 'Car Vertical ' I a have no connection with them but I can recommend them because the checks they do are comprehensive. Hope all this helps a Jack even if you don't buy this car. 👍
I don’t think these 550s look that good - there’s something of a 80s/90s Celica(?) about them - nothing edgy or original in it at all - all very “vanilla” - which is crazy given that it’s a V12 Ferrari. They even got the exhaust boring in the original.
Don't touch it. You can even see that the bodywork in the video isn't right. A 550 needs to be pristine...otherwise it just isn't right. I'm glad you decided not to. He's better off selling it for parts and getting a good one. I would have taken the insurance money and bought another one
This car was neglected by its current owner. Apart from replacing the driver side wing and doing some painting job - the absolute minimum in order to be drivable , the owner fix nothing. AC don't work at all, the dashbord panel is gruesome (are you sure it still have its airbags?), he didn't even bothered to air bleed the brakes!
Bit of luck for the owner there! Shame there's not more detailed pics of the original damage & repair- if there was evidence of thst being to a good standard I'd say this car is actually a bit of a bargain
Lovely looking car, the stuff is just gouche.
Really needs to sound like a V12, needs more noise.
Right rear set of mufflers… Are they canted? Not centered? Or, is it just the camera angle? They look a bit low in their well.
Right rear quarter and door don’t match. Front left wing doesn’t match. It’s worth £20-25k
Nah - just buy property or land. The economic outlook is uncertain, so at least preserve capital and protect it from inflation. That car was never in Magnum PI or Miami Vice. It won't hold in the imagination of younger people.
Get rid of that exhaust and contact Fiammenghi to make you a complete system and let that glorious V12 sing like it deserves.
hi jack, the mot history tells us a story, it's still bent, the airbag ecu took a bath, + the brakes have seen better days... the windows were steamed up, waterleak?, or water still in the fabric?
certainly not to be bought as an asset, but [once mechanically sorted] a very nice trackday tool
tell us more about the gti... keep up the good work young man
The 550 is the most gorgeous "modern" GT ever made!
I made money on only one car via the insurance but it was a Chev Citation and I made $500 but I still could drive it but later I couldn’t even give it away
No way, just looking at your video none of the panels, both side line up. All the panel are different shades of resale red. This is a parts car thats all.
I'm thinking, either it's stolen, or it's a kit car on a Pontiac Fiero chassis and engine :)
You could buy it stick it away in 5 years it will be worth £200k, they way Ferrari prices are going.
