I would argue this is not much different from Adobe's old model, selling full price products periodically as they update it. (CS3, CS5, CS7) Probably not worth getting every version as they release, but may be worth getting an updated one a few versions later when some years have passed. Still way better than a subscription based model any day. Overall I'm very happy with Affinity as an Adobe alternative for photo and design.
Hi Justin: That's an excellent point - yes, Adobe did used to do that in the old days. And paying once is or once in a while is a big money saver. Totally agree with you. XO Lisa
actually there IS a discount for previous versions and the upgrade covers all operating system versions including ipad. That was an impressive offering from Affinity.
I've never tried Affinity since I subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud, but this doesn't surprise me. I have a number of photo related software programs and I think every one of them has ceased doing free upgrades and now charge for them. I suppose the Affinity upgrade price is low, but it sucks for those that thought they would never have to pay more money for it.
Hi Shelley: It was actually a surprise to me, too. When they said "free upgrades" it was very misleading. But I agree - lots of software companies are changing to charge for this now. XO Lisa
Hi Tony: You make a good point. There was a discount when it launched. But I think it's unfair to have to pay for upgrades when it is falsely advertised as "updates" for life. That's semantics by forcing people to pay for an upgrade. I find this practice shady and deceptive. XO Lisa
Thanks for the info.. argh 😩... One correction.. Affinity Designer is like Illustrator, not PhotoShop.. I don't use the Affinity Photo either.. I use Pixelmator, that kinda just pulled same scam too 😏... but their new Pixelmator Pro is from ground up changed and is actually WAY better than the original and worth the upgrade..
Omg! Hate to tell you, but this is EXACTLY how Adobe WAS before it was MADDLY Hacked with Cracked Torrent Versions. You Purchased the Adobe products & got FREE UPDATES within the version (*The SAME as you do with Affinity) then you purchased the UPGRADES to the NEW Versions of Adobe. Which btw was NEVER, NOT EVER (I'm talking about when it 1st game out in the Late 1980s) as INEXPENSIVE as Affinity. I know I've been using Adobe AI & PS since then, yep since it was Adobe '88! Albeit Affinity Designer & Photo V1 & V2 together cost less today then the first versions of Adobe THEN! But you keep paying the subscriptions acting as you know better.
Awww Wolfpack - I wish I had gotten it for free. I paid!! And I wasn't happy about it. I work with other designers and one of them gave me a file in the newest version so I had to upgrade. I don't endorse nor like Affinity. I do think this was a sneaky trick that many people [including myself] felt lied to when they said "future upgrades were free". XO Lisa
You are clearly an Adobe acolyte, and your voice is excruciatingly grating. But credit where it's due: you are not wrong about Affinity. I wish it were not the case, but there it is.

Affinity Photo = Photoshop
Affinity Designer = Illustrator
Affinity Publisher = InDesign
That's right! I don't know why she keeps on saying Affinity Designer as the Photoshop version.
Question: When I'm in affinity publisher I can not see the layers to my photoshop files. Can you tell when I need to do?
Thank you
Hi Penelope: Affinity Publisher cannot open and edit Photoshop files. I think you mean Affinity Designer? XO Lisa

I want to go back to Affinity 1.0... soooo, I can't do it now... omg
Hi there: Yes, it's very true - The way it's set up, you can never go back which is why I always prefer Adobe InDesign. XO Lisa
I wish I never paid for them got ipad and procreate for 10$ I feel so ripped off
Yes, I feel ripped off by them, too. XO Lisa
