Thanks for all the videos you put out there! Will have to figure out the new masking features. I had bought publisher awhile back with intent of learning it but never did. I did like some of those new features for adding pictures so hopefully I will work with it with this time with the help of your videos. Long time subscriber here, great video as always!!!! Is Affinity Photo 2 an upgrade to AF 1? or is it a separate purchase. Lastly...if separate...do I need to keep both 1 and 2? Thanks in advance!
As always, a great video from Ally. So easy to understand and follow. When you add an adjustment layer, it is a new layer above the image layer. When I add an adjustment layer it is NOT a separate layer, it is the same layer. Any ideas why? How is Ezra these days?
That is a setting you can change from the Assistant. See 4:55 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PPNR4Xea9iU/v-deo.html Ezra is helping me plan videos, so that I can make more of them! 😊
To everyone complaining in the comment section that they had to pay for this upgrade, remember before Adobe went bloodsucking subscription we all still had to pay a minimum of $1500 for any one program and between $300-$400 for any subsequent updates. And here you all are complaining about a sub $200 upgrade for the whole suite on all platforms. Until we’ve all transitioned to a no money Star Trek future we still have to charge others for our work.
Thank you both for your excellent work and education! I have purchased today Affinity V2 Universal License (the latest version of the Affinity Suite) on its first day. Strongly appreciate your extraordinary efforts on this very valuable educational Channel.
Thank you for your very clear introduction to ten well chosen features of Affinity 2. Without this, it would have taken me ages to figure out how to apply and adapt the knowledge and techniques I have learned using Affinity 1!
Hi thanks for the video. I have some questions: 1) I have the old version of the three programs for windows. Do you advise me to switch to version 2 considering that I also use a mac (where, however, I had not yet installed the suite)? 2) I noticed that version 1 of affinity photo doesn't open files created with version 2 even if simple. is there a way to fix it? 3) how long do you think version 2 will last before version 3? if I'm not mistaken the 1 came out in 2015 4) By the way I tested v2 both in mac and windows (equivalent hardware) and on mac it seems more responsive. Did this happen to you?
1. If you use Affinity daily or weekly, then it is worth the upgrade. If you only use Affinity once a month or so, I don't think it's worth it to upgrade. 2. Version 1 can't open Version 2 files, but Version 2 can open Version 1 files. There is no way to fix this. 3. I guess it will be around 4 years of updates. 4. I think the Mac version works better. :)
I was really impressed with the Designer update but the update to Photo doesn't seem nearly as impressive and quite minor although they are quite useful features.
@@AffinityRevolution Hi, do u know whether the softwares still link flawlessly if i decided only to update one? Quite often I am switching between Designer and Photo on my projects.
@@n9o Sorry, I'm not sure. I recommend you ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
@@AffinityRevolution I’m a bit surprised they didn’t include an auto trace feature that even some of the subpar vector programs have. That one was puzzling to me.
I've not long brought the trinity 3, it said I get free updates but I guess I get none, I was under the impression that v2 would be free, obviously I would of waited if I knew. And it's not working on Windows 11, so when I upgrade to Windows 11 then its like serif has robbed me as there most likely won't be any updates to V1. If they don't get it working on Windows 11 then I'd never recommend or buy from serif ever again, at least they could promise us that they'll stand by its customers and fix this issue. I'd rather have a dedicated ssd with windows 10 on it just for this program than buy v2 and support a company that doesn't seem to care less for its customers. I have to add with what a great teacher you are, your amazing. Thank you.
Thanks for that great video. How did you zoom in on the photo in the export window? No matter what tool I am using when I go to the export window, the tool switches to the grabbing hand. In your video, all I can tell is that you are using the pointer and somehow clicking on the image. Help, please!
thanks for the tips, i had figured that Affinity's radio silence as of late was no doubt due to a major upgrade. I had predicted tweaks to the raw developer, but the mask tools are a welcome surprise as i use masks frequently i conjunction with the curve tool.
The new masking tools are great! Hopefully someday we get some RAW updates as well. I'd love to have something that cab be a "Lightroom" replacement. 😊
Although I like the changes, I can't see myself buying it (for another ~50€), except there is a better upgrade price for those who already own the previous version that I just couldn't find.
I don't think there is an additional discount (just the 40% they are offering everyone). But in addition to today's upgrades, you will also get free updates for the next few years. 😊
To find a silver lining, it's way less costly to upgrade to v2 than it would have been to pay monthly for the BIG A software for the last 4 years. And I'm gonna get Publisher as well, rather than faking it with Designer.
I upgraded with a set of all Affinity products and paid $100. Taking into account the fact that there are versions for Ipad, which I did not have, then consider paying $60 extra for the update. It's very profitable! Taking the subscription model as an example, this is a huge savings of hundreds of dollars over time. 💥
@@Reeceline Necessarily! In this case, at least I remain the owner of the previous version and may not be updated. And in the case of Adobe, this is some kind of slavery. You use the software - you constantly pay. You do not use software - you also constantly pay. Stopped paying and lost the software. Nightmare. 😂
Thank you for all of your videos!! With the new Affinity 2, have you heard anything about the move tool randomly not working? It’s driving me nuts today! I can’t figure it out at all. Thanks again!
Oh no! I haven't heard of that, but maybe someone else has. You can ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-macos-and-windows/

Thanks for the clear info. And I am sorry for you that you will have to redo all your past videos to match the new user interface... (And what are you going to do with the old videos? I for one do not currently plan to pay for this upgrade, even though I would love to have luminosity mask)
Haha yes, I have a lot of videos to make in the next few months. 😅 I'm not sure what I will do with my old videos. They are still useful for people using version 1, but I don't want to confuse people that have version 2, so I'm not sure yet... 🤔
I can drop the money now for the discount for Photo and Designer. Hoping Serif sticks with updating it like Affinity 1 suite so that even if the current changes are mostly QoL and things that should have been an update to Photo 1 (non-destructive RAW). The way I see it, this is basically CS2 to CS3 where CS3 had features but mostly changed the appearance with QoL items bundled and then hopefully the CS4-CS6 levels of improvement/updates can happen over time with Photo/Designer 2. I do wish Serif would take some time to develop a version of Bridge and provide an importer/library management system. There's already a lot of RAW development apps like darktable, Capture1, etc, so I don't really expect them to try and shoehorn their CameraRaw tool into said library management system, but it would be nice to have a selfcontained workflow for easy backup and grouped storage (I import an image from a card, that card is moved over to the assigned library folder + date or whatever, then if I select it to edit it's automatically grouped within the management software grouped with an affinity file that just contains the linked raw edits. From there the edit and base raw is a "single" group entry in the library, I could scan over it seeing all the edits, and then export from there using Affinity's export tool. TBH I would pay an extra 20 bucks for that tool on its own if it received the same quality updates for efficiency, bug fix, etc as the other Serif programs. I could pretty much replace my lightroom/photoshop workflow at that point unless I really need a specific tool/feature.
Hey ally will you be revamping the affinity tutorials on the site due to all the new updates to the program? Sorry if this was asked before. I'd love to get some version 2 tutorials :)
Ally; Affinity uses masks quite a bit to get work done. Having been a PS user for 30 years. I never did use masks much. While a "get it" when you are showing adjustments but I tend to just lose it all and get confused. I want, in the worst way, to get rid of PS altogether. It costs too much and Affinity was chosen as the replacement. I do use GIMP when I'm in Linux but that is for small adjustments. Have you, or would you consider. doing a video on nothing but explaining masks in general...like a 10-minute lesson? I also have Affinity Designer which I am still learning. I bought that course already. BTW do you think Affinity would ever add neural filters at some point? Thanks and keep these vids coming.
I cover masks pretty extensively in my Affinity Photo Beginner course, and have some simpler mask videos here on UA-cam. Hopefully those can help you! :) courses.affinityrevolution.com/p/affinity-photo-for-beginners ua-cam.com/video/23oVnoTW3r8/v-deo.html
As with yiour courses I was Impressed by your excited evaluation and description so I bought it. I use Lightroom as my catalog and Photo as an external editor . I have just "pointed" Photo.exe to enab;e this. Not so with Photo 2 though - I cannot find the location of Photo 2 - can you advise?
Ally just sold me the Affinity Photo update. I had been expecting a bit more after the hype about the changes. But nevertheless it does seem to be worth buying.
have been using Affinity Photo and Design ver1. I have not used Publisher. I have a Avada wordpress website that I want to redesign. Would Affintiy Publisher help with the new website? Also curious if the Selection brush tool in Affinity Photo V2 has gotten more accurate and easy to use.
Sorry, but I don't think Affinity Publisher will help you with your Wordpress website. And the selection brush did not get any better in Version 2. That's something I hope the Affinity team works on soon!
One of the Biggest Drawback i found in affinity app on ipad is we can't switch between designer and photo with same Document we are working on. which is much handy when working with both pixel and vector layer
This was informative. I was going to update anyway, but your video was the one that demonstrated the increase in value based on the interface improvements. I’m not a heavy user, but sometimes it is a useful program. If you have suggestions as to use DXO Photolab for this / Affinity for that, I’d be grateful. Currently, I’d tend to finish with DXO to do final noise reduction. Would I get two sidecar files? I’m assuming yes.
Great review! Looking forward to use Affinity Photo for the first time, moving from the adobe Photoshop because I don't like their subscription payment structure.
Thanks for the overview, really excited for v2. Will the affinity revolution courses be updated to reflect the changes in v2 or will there be new courses later?
Sorry, I'm not sure. I don't use presets... 😅 I recommend you ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Since your how-to lessons are step-by-step and detailed, it seems you'll have to update (or completely re-do) your previous lessons. I think some people (maybe most?) are like me and will need that extra detail how-to on the 22.0 version.
I'm still not sure if it is really necessary for me to spend this extra money in the upgrade. Hue masks seems interesting and a quick way to process different colors and specific parts of an image, a bit like color range in PS. But I'm a bit confused about Luminosity masks and what is the difference in applying these or a blend range in a curves adjustment layer for example.
Blend Ranges and Luminosity Masks are very similar. It's just a matter of which button you prefer clicking. Don't upgrade just to get Luminosity Masks. haha :)
@@AffinityRevolution of course. Well I must say having the chance to preview the mask as you work it is a plus. But can you draw over the luminosity mask? I mean, if for example you only want to apply certain adjustment over a small part of the shadows... Btw, anyone knows until when is this 40% applied? Thanks
More thoughts. I agree the feature additions are not worth a full point upgrade. Maybe a 1.10 to 1.20, but not to 2.0 with more $$. Editable raw is nice, but there was no mention of improvements to the actual raw engine which are sorely needed. Also missing (still) is a browser to integrate work flows and file navigation. This has been requested for years. It need not be Lightroom like, just simple like Adobe Bridge. Even DxO has now added some basic functionality in their latest release.
Yes. The raw engine is mediocre and there is no browser. Affinity is meant more for tuning after raw but most of this work can already been done with good raw converters.
Hello i wanted to ask (i have all 3 affinity but version 1) in the new version in the developer .it's there the possibility to change the vibrance , saturation of colors , like in photoshop lightroom wen you eddit photos? or is the same as version 1

I'm really enjoying your "Affinity Photo / Designer for Beginners" courses in your site, learning a lot and I wanna say Thank you, Ally and Ezra. Now my progress rate of the courses is about 20%. So... Could you keep these courses as long as possible? I'm not sure but just guessing... maybe the time could come when you finish making beginners courses for Affinity V2, uploading them and then sadly removing the previous courses for Affinity V1? (Cuz Affinity V1 gets older and naturally New users wanna buy V2) Before that time comes, I would like to finish this V1 course😂. Thank you again for you guys efforts for Affinity classes
Any batch processing of raw photos possible now? (ie: make basic adjustments to 1 photo, save it as a preset and apply automatically to a series of RAW pictures without having to do it 1 by 1?)

Long time subscriber here, great video as always!!!! Is Affinity Photo 2 an upgrade to AF 1? or is it a separate purchase. Lastly...if separate...do I need to keep both 1 and 2? Thanks in advance!
It is a separate purchase. But if you get Version 2, then you do not need to keep Version 1. 🙂
@@AffinityRevolution great, thanks for the rapid reply!!!
This is fantastic as its been sometime since we have had any form of update. Cheers Ally
The developers have been working on this update behind the scenes for a long time. I'm glad it's finally out! 😊
See 4:55 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PPNR4Xea9iU/v-deo.html
Ezra is helping me plan videos, so that I can make more of them! 😊
@@AffinityRevolution Perfect Thank you Ally
love these. the adjustments mask was making me mental. i knew there had to be a secret, no one they would rid that. whew.
Thank you! Glad you liked the video.
True true. A lot of people forget how great of a deal Affinity is, even at the upgrade price.
Very impressive updates - thanks for the great explanations (as usual) Ally!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video and updates. 😊
Thank you both for your excellent work and education!
I have purchased today Affinity V2 Universal License (the latest version of the Affinity Suite) on its first day.
Strongly appreciate your extraordinary efforts on this very valuable educational Channel.
Thank you Frank! I appreciate your kind comment. 😊
so helpful. Thx for all your hard work
Thank you Frank! 😊
Thank you for your very clear introduction to ten well chosen features of Affinity 2. Without this, it would have taken me ages to figure out how to apply and adapt the knowledge and techniques I have learned using Affinity 1!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Hi thanks for the video. I have some questions:
1) I have the old version of the three programs for windows. Do you advise me to switch to version 2 considering that I also use a mac (where, however, I had not yet installed the suite)?
2) I noticed that version 1 of affinity photo doesn't open files created with version 2 even if simple. is there a way to fix it?
3) how long do you think version 2 will last before version 3? if I'm not mistaken the 1 came out in 2015
4) By the way I tested v2 both in mac and windows (equivalent hardware) and on mac it seems more responsive.
@@AffinityRevolution thanks😍
Thanks Ally! You're the best!
Thank you! 🤗
Thank you for the really useful summary of the update. Today could have been difficult without your speedy response.
Thank you! I worked some long hours to get this video out so quickly, so I'm glad it's appreciated. 😊
Always clear and interesting. Great. Tks
Thanks Daniel! 😊
I was really impressed with the Designer update but the update to Photo doesn't seem nearly as impressive and quite minor although they are quite useful features.
I agree. The Designer updates are definitely my favorite!
To be fair, designer needed the updates the most.
Thank you.
I wish they had given people like you a better way to upgrade to v2. Hopefully Serif can figure out a better system in the future! 😕
Thanks for that great video. How did you zoom in on the photo in the export window? No matter what tool I am using when I go to the export window, the tool switches to the grabbing hand. In your video, all I can tell is that you are using the pointer and somehow clicking on the image. Help, please!
You can use "Ctrl +" (PC) or "Command +" (Mac) to zoom in. 😊
@@AffinityRevolution That worked. Thank you! I've used that trick before, but I didn't even think to try it.
thanks for the tips, i had figured that Affinity's radio silence as of late was no doubt due to a major upgrade.
Great work Ally.
I am thinking that in short term you can run V1 and V2 side by side as 2 separate apps.
You can! I think you will be able to do that indefinitely, since they are considered separate programs.
Of course we enjoyed and thank you.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
@@gandolfred dont forget you also get free updates until version 3.0 too. The price is very generous compared to the market standard!
@@Reeceline Necessarily! In this case, at least I remain the owner of the previous version and may not be updated. And in the case of Adobe, this is some kind of slavery. You use the software - you constantly pay. You do not use software - you also constantly pay. Stopped paying and lost the software. Nightmare. 😂
Thank goodness for non destructive raw editing! No more dealing with Luminar's slowness for me!
Yes! I was very excited for that update. 😊
Thank you for all of your videos!! With the new Affinity 2, have you heard anything about the move tool randomly not working? It’s driving me nuts today! I can’t figure it out at all. Thanks again!
Oh no! I haven't heard of that, but maybe someone else has. You can ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-macos-and-windows/
updated, thank you
You're going to love Version 2! :)
Thanks for this great walk through. How do we upgrade to version 2?
This is Affinity's first paid upgrade. You can get the new Affinity Photo for $40. Then you will get 2.0 updates for free. 😊
affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/
@@AffinityRevolution Thank you. I already have Affinity Photo and I am looking to upgrade to this free version 2
@@NJM1948 I have AP as well, but, looking at the website, to get the V2.0 requires a payment of £35.99. No free version, I'm afraid.

@@Vinterbukser Well, I won't be paying again!! I don't use Affinity enough to justify it and this will seal it's fate!! Use Luminar NEO and ON1 for all my editing now
I already bought Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer a year ago. The question I have is, do i need to purchase again to get the new version or is there another process for previous buyers?
Unfortunately, you need to buy the new version. But then you will get free updates for 4 years. 😊
I'm not sure what I will do with my old videos.
Good comparison. This is very similar to the old CS upgrades from Adobe.
I would also love an "Affinity Bridge". Maybe someday!
Hey ally will you be revamping the affinity tutorials on the site due to all the new updates to the program? Sorry if this was asked before. I'd love to get some version 2 tutorials :)
Yes! I'm already working on new videos. 😊

I don't think Version 2 is working with 3rd party applications yet. Hopefully they can fix this soon!
Thanks for that useful insight, has helped towards my decision to upgrade or not.
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Ally just sold me the Affinity Photo update. I had been expecting a bit more after the hype about the changes. But nevertheless it does seem to be worth buying.
You're going to enjoy Version 2! I can't wait to see what updates they bring out next. 😊
Thank you, looks awesome!
Thank you! 😊
have been using Affinity Photo and Design ver1.
Great video Ali -Thank you for reviewing the main changes... are we ever going to get Affinity Photo APP on our cell phones ?
I don't think so. Just on Mac, PC, and the iPad.
One of the Biggest Drawback i found in affinity app on ipad is we can't switch between designer and photo with same Document we are working on. which is much handy when working with both pixel and vector layer
Ya, that it is too bad. 😕
Sorry, I don't use DXO, so I'm not sure. But if DXO has good noise reduction, then your plan sounds spot on to me.
Great update!
Thank you! Glad you liked it. 😊
Great video! Many thanks.
Thank you Richard! 😊
Great review! Looking forward to use Affinity Photo for the first time, moving from the adobe Photoshop because I don't like their subscription payment structure.
That's great! Welcome to Affinity. 😊
Thanks for the overview, really excited for v2. Will the affinity revolution courses be updated to reflect the changes in v2 or will there be new courses later?
I'll be working on new tutorials right away. They should be coming soon!
Thanks for the info. Do you know if you can use the "presets" in library and assets you have in V1 in V2, as I find them a great starting point.
Yes, I have a lot of videos to make in the next few months! 😅
People will still use version 1 though and the past videos would still be relevant I would think?
@@modelcarshouston Yes, that's true. 😊
@@AffinityRevolution then better to add to previous vidoes in title "v1", if something is changed so much, that old tutorial is misleadig
I would love an Adobe Bridge style update to Affinity. Maybe someday!
Hello i wanted to ask (i have all 3 affinity but version 1) in the new version in the developer .it's there the possibility to change the vibrance , saturation of colors , like in photoshop lightroom wen you eddit photos? or is the same as version 1

It sure is! 🥳 🥳 🥳
Will it be coming for iPad ?
Yes, Affinity Photo Version 2 is in the app store right now. 😊
Does AP2 still work with capture 1 Express, which has great raw converter and digital asset manager? If not, the new features in AP 2 are not enough to encourage an upgrade
Sorry Tim, I don't think it does that.
Loved the new features of Affinity Photo, however the creators need to work on Develop Persona. Adobe's Camera RAW is unbeatable.
I hope they work on that in future updates. That would be great!
I knew before buying that whenever v2 , v1 would stop having updates. "Sadly" I bought the v1 version a few months ago, so I'll probably pass on this version for now plus I haven't finish most of your amazing tutorials. Thanks for the video!
Oh man, that stinks! Version 1 is still really great though, so I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. 😊
You have lifetime access to all the videos you purchased. You can take your time watching them. 😊
Another great video but there is one bit of info I wish had been included = what is the cost of moving from V1 to V2?
You can get the new Affinity Photo for $40, or all the programs for $100. Then you will get 2.0 updates for free for the next 4 years or so.

Goooo Affinity! 🥳
Any batch processing of raw photos possible now? (ie: make basic adjustments to 1 photo, save it as a preset and apply automatically to a series of RAW pictures without having to do it 1 by 1?)
No, not yet. I'm really hoping for that feature too!
Ally, how does this work? I've downloaded and installed. I wanted it to go to my D drive but there was no option.
