  • The youngest progeny from Hall of Fame superstar Zenyatta recently arrived at John Shirreffs's barn at Santa Anita. The 2-year-old chestnut filly by Candy Ride (Arg) named Zilkha is already well on her way to making her debut this year. Zoe Cadman checks in with her trainer.

No biggie to me, we've already got superstars by the year coming on strong, other than the obvious studs. For instance, Who knew Quality Road would produce so well... even Uncle Mo who was a real talent, has produced black type all over the world. That is not really true. Secretariat did not reproduce himself, but he sired several excellent horses: Lady's Secret, Risen Star, Tinner's Way, Kingston Rule, Pancho Villa, General Assembly, and others. He didn't leave a sire line to speak of, but he became a premier broodmare sire. Of course, as a stallion he would have far more offspring than any mare, so a much better chance of having good offspring. Sadly, Z has been unsuccessful as a broodmare, although we will never know what would have happened if either of her War Front offspring had lived. Z Princess looked really good by all reports.

    Big tomboys like Zenyatta typically don't make good broodmares. I never expected her to produce anything of note, and that's what happened. The biggest surprise was what a little squirt Zellda was. Zenyatta is big enough to pull a beer wagon, so Zellda coming out the size of a BLM mustang was unexpected.

      @@montanawarren8462 When they pinch one off it is done at such an early stage the "keeper" develops as a singleton. I have no idea why Zellda was the size of a Chihuahua. It had to be genetic. As such, it was just one of those things. Wouldn't have necessarily completely prevented her from being successful on the track - Dark Mirage only weighed 700 lbs, but was champion 3yo filly of '68 and in the HOF - but made it unlikely. So not racing her made sense.

      @@DoubleDogDare54 but what gets me is how do they know which one to pinch off? They're not God & if they are equal size how do you know which ones better than the other? Once you have a set of twins you're really alert to that situation let me clue you! And I had an old Standardbred vet tell me that at twin mare has a 85% higher chance than a regular Mare of throwing a champion! In my experience with twin fillies is they produce larger hearts and larger lung size...if you read the book about Northern Dancer with both his parents being very small I would say they were both Twins and then he passes it on the large heart and a large Lukeng size which made him a champion in the breeding program that's why they go around measuring hearts at The Yearling sales I believe... I think it was Funny Cide that had a larger heart and larger Lungs along with Secretariat.

    • @DoubleDogDare54
      @DoubleDogDare54 2 роки тому +5

      @@montanawarren8462 They simply pick one and eliminate the other. It is a crapshoot, same as when you breed and get one to start with. But if you let them both develop, chances are better than good the pregnancy will abort, the foals will be premature and likely not survive, and if they do survive, not amount to much. Better to pinch one off and hope for the best.
      Prior to ultrasound it was impossible to know if a mare conceived twins until either they aborted or are born dead or alive. After ultrasound became standard it was discovered a fair number of pregnancies in horses start as twins, but one of them naturally disappears on its own.
      The "X Factor"/Large Heart Gene is a theory believed by some, disputed by others. In the 20th century there were four stallions that allegedly passed "X" on to their filly foals - Princequillo, War Admiral, Blue Larkspur and Mahmoud. If you believe the gene exists, there are probably others. If you don't believe it exists, it is serendipity that determines if a horse is born with a larger heart than normal.

    I guess I am not surprised that Zenyatta, as big and powerful as she was could not quite make it as a producer of horses that can run no matter who she was bred to. As she got older, she started absorbing her foals, so hoping her owners realize that Zenyatta may have been a great racehorse but for reasons we don't know, is the opposite of being a blue hen. Her half-sister Winx, a great race mare who regularly beat the boys lost her first foal. No news on how she is doing after having been rebred.

      @pat mckinzie I am trying to even remember the first stallion she was bred to, and I think it was one owned by HRH from Dubai.
