Zenyatta and Her Candy Ride Filly at Lane's End Farm

- Nearly a decade after her last start on the racetrack, Hall of Famer and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta is still thriving in her career as a broodmare. We met her new foal, a filly by Candy Ride, at Lane's End Farm.
Zenyatta’s exceptional talent on the track has yet to be seen in her offspring, with her first foal Cozmic One (Bernardini) running unplaced in five starts, but now succeeding in the show ring. Her other son Ziconic (Tapit) also never visited the winner’s circle.
But in the next few years, there is new opportunity for Zenyatta’s progeny to succeed.
Her daughter Zellda, a 3-year-old filly by Medaglia d’Oro, is in training under John Shirreffs and recorded her latest breeze on July 13, going four furlongs from the gate at Del Mar.
And this year, a second daughter arrived to carry on the family name.
Zenyatta foaled a filly by Candy Ride (Arg) on May 17.

She always has a swagger. Owners took care of her not willing to cave in to pressure to run and always thought about her well being.
But the owners go visit their horse a couple times per year... how detached!
@@chelsea_belle this is a broodmare, not a pet. This mare has a job to do, and probably doesn't care if the owners see her or not.
That's why John Sheriff is my favorite trainer of all time. He waited until the big girl's legs were mature. A 17-hand horse takes even longer for their legs to be ready.
She was the "Dancing Queen"!! LOL! She did that little dance coming out of the paddock all the time!
@@secretariatgirl4249 I LOVE that Abba Dancing Queen vid, but the video is so poorly shot it makes me dizzy.
I'd like to let the lovers of Z know a little bit more of this magnificent mare. I work on the farm and have gotten to know Z and her baby who I nicknamed Monkey Meat. Z is a incredibly smart horse that has a very sweet but reserved attitude. However, on the muscle, before she got pregnant, I don't believe I've held a more powerful horse than her at the end of a shank--stallion or mare. And I have held hundreds. She does have a sweet tooth from hell and loves the Pastures natural oat cookies. Monkey Meat on the other hand is very affectionate and loves being scratched and follows me around as we play for a few minutes. You can scratch her anywhere and she loves it while Z's favorite spot is on her butt by the tail root.
The lady speaking is Jen and she doesn't get enough credit for the birth of this baby. My personal opinion is that this baby probably wouldn't be born without Jen, her assistant Connor and the farm manager Todd. One helleva management team.
I did tell the little rascal that Monkey Meat wouldn't be her real name, Mrs Moss would pick out something beautiful like Red Flame or something like that. Anyway, they are both happy and healthy horses.
Thank you for this wonderful account of Zenny and Monkey Meat, it made my day. Can't do any travelling to visit them, so please keep us posted!
Wow, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this! I'm curious why you nicknamed the filly Monkey Meat? Would love to know the back story there. Haha.
Zenita
Thanks for giving us this extra info about Zenyatta and Monkey Meat.
ZENYATTA. I LOVE YOU .I MISS YOU...BEST HORSE EVER..
She is very beautiful. The Candy Ride filly is beautiful just like her mom. I love this mare at the track she was Spectacular. Love her dance. I would love to meet her someday.
A BIG Thank You to the Mosses for racing her for as long as you did. And letting us to see her babies and how Big Z is doing.
Thank you.
I wish more people would be as patient as Zenny's owners and trainer, and give their horses more time to grow before making so many demands of them Zenyatta is such a big girl, she could have broken down like so many horses have.Instead she grew into herself, she learned that amazing come from behind tactic and Mike Smith got to know her,her strengths, and piloted her home safely.I love her for her speed,I love her for her style and her personality, shaking her butt as she danced onto the track, and teaching her babies her dance moves.Queen Z!
Watch her half sis Winx for come from behind action....I was always a nervous wreck watching her as she revved up at the 300 meter mark, usually wide!!
I have a retired racehorse who was ruined before he was three. He is 17 hands and was born in June. They blew both front suspensories by running him again after he was injured.
Cheapskate owner said he didn't want to feed him for the year it would take to heal the first injury. Forced the trainer to run him.
@@srfotog Such people only see the horses as money-making machines. It's horrible.
I'm 81 years old and watched the greats thru the years, too numerous to mention here but I have a special place for her in my heart no doubt some would argue but in her only loss I think Mike was responsible, another 10 feet and she would have caught Blame. So good to see her doing well. For me, she stands beside Cigar, Dr. Fager, and Swaps which ghost-like linger in my memories. Thanks for the upload.
I honestly don't think it was Mike, though I accept that a lot of others do. I was at that race. In my opinion, she was just too used to the poly track over at Santa Anita. Being a horse that makes her run from behind, she got plastered with mud in her face from the break, something she didn't have to deal with on a synthetic surface. She came back past the stands after that race a different color because she was absolutely covered head to toe in dirt, something she'd never experienced before. I don't think she liked it much and it shocked her a bit, she never really hit a comfortable stride through the first half or more of the race, you can really see how disconnected she is in the replay. She just wouldn't settle and wound up with too much ground to make up when she finally kicked into gear. Should Mike have gotten on her case sooner? I don't know, maybe he did. Being someone who rides myself, I know there are plenty of times I cue my horse and nobody on the ground would never know I'd done it, if she didn't respond. So he may well have asked and goten no response. I just think the dynamic way that she did finally kick in and close, made it so much easier to blame it on Mike. He knew that horse better than anyone, I really feel she was just bothered and didn't respond to him early enough. Of course, Mike not only took the blame from everyone else, he also blamed himself. He'd never blame the horse, especially given she was Zenyatta, the champion of people's hearts. He wouldn't cheapen her legacy by telling people she just didn't kick in as soon as she needed to. Doing this for as long as I have, I just don't think it was all down to Mike. I don't think the Sherrif's felt that way either, as they still give him plenty of mounts. Nonetheless, I'll never forget that day, the deafening roar of the crowd, the way my heart began to pound and soar as she finally started eating up the ground beneath her, and the broken hearted disappointed when she lost by so little. In my opinion, her one loss was her greatest win. That was the best race she ever ran, despite the fact that she lost. She was so far back that it looked impossible to come back from, which just made her that much greater when not only did she come back, she damn near won.❤
@@Nicole-qc5dh Thanks for the heart felt response - I do not ride so your insight helps me understand things a bit differently. Nevertheless, I never so far back early and as you so eloquently described our hearts were pounding as she launched her stretch run. Good luck to you and of course to the Queen and her progeny.
@@fterrysmith6753 Thank you for the warm wishes.❤ Yeah, I've just never bought the thought that a seasoned jockey like Mike would think that he could give up that much ground and come out victorious. He's a hall of fame jockey for a reason, they generally don't make those types of rookie mistakes. I could be wrong, the only one who knows for sure is Mike and he wouldn't have put that on her either way. I have to admit, I'm somewhat jealous of all the greats you have seen run. Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, John Henry, Ruffian, etc, etc, etc. I was born in 1977, so I missed out on a lot of them. I did get to meet Cigar at the Kentucky Horse Park long after his retirement. He was quite a character and knew he was a Champion, he was very proud. I wish you well, take care!
@@Nicole-qc5dh You have a great argument and I certainly believe it. It's hard to think Mike did anything wrong. He is the best jockey in racing.
She only needed one more stride to beat Blame, but it was too late.

She was simply amazing on the track and she’s still amazing as a momma ❤️
I have almost forgotten about her, with everything going on. It's good to see her doing well. Wow !! We need all the great news we can get these days.
Amen to that! The Ky. Derby gave me a real high; I was on cloud nine watching all the races that day. Horses have been the best medicine for me my whole life.
She gave us so many thrilling moments. Hopefully one of her offspring turn out to be 1/2 as good as she way. Be healthy and safe Queen

Agreed 😬👍❤️❤️
“QUEEN” Z -YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!
Thanks to the Moss’s and J Sherrif for keeping her sound and kept her racing so we as fans, could enjoy her on the racetrack....”one in a million” special mare!
I played Gio Ponti and my wife Zenyatta on Breeders’ Cup Classic day 10/09. I was never happier losing a horse race and I should have known, that, the “women are ALWAYS right”....
You can say that again! Look at Enable and Love in Europe!
Haha takes s MAN to admit that!! Like your attitude and smart choice of wife
Poca Hontas We’re in the sports book at a Laughlin, NV casino in 2009 or 10. I’d had just met my future wife and yes I take her to the Breeders Cup on our first date to a sports book casino. She has $2 win on this horse called Dakota Phone. Longest shot on the board. The book is silent as this Phone horse comes closing on the outside and wins the race from last. She’s going nuts and the book is dead silent. I was mortified. She cashed for $80 or $90, I don’t remember as I was tearing up tickets after studying the Form for 2 weeks. She liked the name....
Always loved her! Such a beautiful horse and great mother. So good to see her again! ❤️
One of the greats. And such a sweetheart.
Lol she said that race call still gives goosebumps, I looked down to my arms to confirm, yes indeed it does! Amazing mare, one of my favorites
Oh and happy birthday Zenyatta!
Great, great video. Let's have them more often! So many of us watch all her videos on UA-cam over and over.
That's my baby...I don't care about her producing a runner just as long as Zenyatta and all her babies continue to be healthy and strong. God has made it clear that she will be one of a kind, UNIQUE! I'm accepting that and enjoying the moment. She is #THE BEAST!
One already died as a foal......so it's a little late for that.....
And the GOAT of fillies.
That ol girl was a SUPER STAR ⭐️ she beat the boys too💪
What a well done video. Once the coronavirus is gone, and the political situation in the US normalizes I'd really love to drive down in our electric car and go to Lane's end to see Zenyatta. That would be a lifetime milestone.
Queen Z has had an impact on my life and thinking, too. One of those things is that she was originally bought for $60,000. The Green Monkey was 16 or 17 million. She became a legend; he is mostly forgotten. I used to tease my husband: "I could have bought Zenyatta!" This was a joke because we live in suburbia and have no barn, trainer, etc. But our front yard has nice green grass. Just in case she'd like to visit. Love ya'll, and appreciate the videos and information you give us.
Nice discussions, happy to see her still going strong, doing the broodmares thing, she'll throw a champion... Love that Mare!
Great to see Zen and her girls. Thanks for a beautiful video.
How can you not love the queen! The video she mentioned that Z knows she’s special, it seems the great horses know that and maybe that gives them that extra little edge do great things on the track that win our hearts 💕

Have always loved Queen Z. So nice to see her and her new foal. Thanks to all who made this video.
So much to love about Zenyatta. And now she has offspring. I am eager to see them run!
She's already had a few,and they have been terrible..
I am always bemused that they have never bred Zenyatta to another very large horse. Candy Ride is only 16 hands while Zenyatta is 17 plus. It is amazing that her success came from her huge stride and they still won't select a large stud which will also pass on his huge stride to their foal. Why not Tiznow, Hard Spun , Quality Road, or Midnight Lute all at 16.3 or taller as the sire of the next one? Midnight Lute is the sire of Midnight Bizou one of the most consistent fillies or mares since Zenyatta and this would add Secretariat to the foal's pedigree. (Her foal by Tapit, Ziconic, also had Secretariat in his pedigree.) Midnight Bizou almost won the Saudi Derby, the world's richest race. Sure, it will take a bit longer for the offspring to mature but Zenyatta did not start until late November well into her third year and still became a Super Star.
Mucho Macho Man would be an excellent choice!
MY FAVORITES. ZENYATTA RUFFIAN BARBARO. BEAUTIFULL HORSES.
Filly looked good with that short back and long legs. Hope she’s a good runner!
Short back almost always means a sprinter if they do end up being anything good, so its likely shes not doing anything like her mom.
Watch her race at Hollywood Park. Did her dance in the paddock as well. Beautiful to look at as well! Love her.
How could you not love Queen Z! The Candy Ride baby might be her best yet I hope. Looked like a really nice foal. But I will love her no matter what she ultimately does as a broodmare. One for the ages!
She’s what we call A GREAT ONE ! Love her always
What a wonderful video! Just love Queen Z and her baby; they are really special. Wish I could visit them! Good luck and best wishes to this great family!
I loved her determination to win

Wonderful to see her!! Amazing presence!!
Candy Ride + Zenyatta, what a combo! Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies, Kentucky Oaks , maybe even Breeders Cup Classic? you name it.

Glad to see what shes up to! I hate the racing industry but zenyatta is by far my favorite racehorse by far. You can just tell shes smant and enjoys her job, and I can't admire her owners enough for waiting to race her instead of rushing her so young like most horses.

I can't imagine why 13 people dislike this video but ... I followed her like a stalker almost I went to the Arkansas Derby when she beat the champion Ginger punch . it was my birthday I bet on horse races so I could take the money and go to California and see her race multiple times and I did meet great people and we had a chant going . Even mrs. Chenry was there! Yes the courageous intuitive amazing Penny Chenery. Then on the 19th race they gave a video to everyone who came showing all her races. This particular item is a treasure to me and when I get uninspired I put it on. I went to Breeders Cup and I also went to Churchill Downs on last race when she didn't start and 74000 people in the stands went completely silent and yet she still was nose-to-nose at the end. Her whole campaign was so well-managed. The Mosses cared about her and knew that this was some kind of miraculous occurrence in their lives and they were the perfect stewards along with John Sheriffs and of course Mike the inimitable. Day after last race at Churchill Mrs Moss had Mario bring her out for the fans and she came and signed our shirts and hats Etc. She wrote on mine live life the Zenyatta way.
Zenyatta was sent with a mission that she more than fulfilled and her Legacy will last forever and her Legacy and Compasses so much more than just watching a beautiful animal run oh, she is a teacher So grateful when we get the pleasent occasional glimpses into her current life. Will never forget this joy in my lifetime.
Look at them now, are they not the most beautiful creatures! If that's not the prettiest spunkiest baby just like her mama. Thanks to the lovely worker who narrates the story beautifully. How does one get so lucky as to visit this Mare I think a lot of us dream of that
That's an awesome story! The Moss's were so generous with her, been easy to retire her undefeated , they are breeders u k, but decided to race her again (at 5) for the fans too. God bless the whole circle around her..❤️🙏🇺🇸
Ginger punch was grossly out of form by this time...
Zenyatta is a great Mom she is awesome her Filly is so adorable
I would love to see what Zenyatta would produce if bred to American Pharoah or Justify.
Totally my dream
If you follow pedigree theory, American Pharoah is a poor "nick" with her. Justify has a good "nick" but he isn't the physical type they usually go to for her stallions. She is so large that they dont need a stallion who could create a larger foal.
Kim Riser sometimes the “perfect nick” isn’t the best foal. I just happen to think either of those would produce a good cross with her. And I’m not someone who just thinks this on a whim. As is, she’s not produced any really stellar foals, so I don’t see that it would hurt.
i would love to see her bred to another danzig/danehill line stallion like war front. i feel like that cross is just meant to be. they need to stop trying with these ap indy and storm cat stallions
Isn't her breeding more turf leaning? I'd like to see her bred to a turf sure, maybe a legendary miler, the stamina will come from her. Sometimes that type wins the derby too, but not lately. Candy ride has some turf lines I think. If I remember right, he won on turf before they switched him, maybe they've found the right cross.. Good luck!!!❤️🙏🇺🇸
Great horses come in once in a lifetime and to expect them to be great is really a dis-service to the animals. Horse racing at this point is at a rocky point and needs to step back and really change horse racing. They must realize that the inhumane conditions that occur with their industry until they realize that then change will be forthcoming.
Her half sis Winx has been treated like the queen she is....Chris Waller was amazing at keeping her in tip top shape....visits to the sea, massage, you name it.
