Sadly painters were exposed to lead paint and strong solvents and were generally referred to as daft, in ship yards etc, PPE was poor at the time which added to the problems. A few years in Greenock I worked on painting a large oil reletated ship, we had the yard surveyed before we started to prevent future claims of contamination and the yard was actually found to be far more dangerous than the ship.
