  • Hello! Here is an updated video as promised of my Valve index after 2000 hours and about a year and a half of usage. I have been through a lot and I have learned a lot about the index and how to make it last a long time, so buckle up and enjoy!
    BTW, im super sorry, this this video took me way longer to do than normal, Im using multiple different camera setups with different lighting etc, definitely is not my best video ever, but It will get better. Thank you!

      Yeah, mine has two. I also reinforced both with cable ties, don't use a pully system, and have a clip on the cable that attaches to my belt so there's never any opportunity for strain on the headset. As long as you take care of your headset, there shouldn't most of these issues.

      I got that second one at the back of the headset to break of for no real reason. I don't use a pully system, using a cable tie there now to hold it in place for comfort reasons, did not think this was a new addition as you otherwise get the cable to lay on your shoulder instead of running down your back (which the prior is rather annoying)

    Quick Reminder: despite the problems remember that he spends A LOT more time on the index than most people probably will for a long time. So while some things like the first cable failure and some of the early issues are a good point to look at, not all the problems will likely happen unless you're putting in hours and hours almost every day every week and putting stress on these objects more than the normal Index user.

    • @benkahn5063

      I think it's a lot less the actual time he spends, it's the way he uses all the stuff. He's incredibly a violent with his headset. I'm not saying that using it like that should have these issues though, besides doing handstands which he has broken more than one index with.

    Here's an idea for preserving the cable on the Index…
    There's a type of plastic tubing used for cable management of computer desks. This tubing has a repeating rib structure, similar to an accordion, that allows it to be more flexible. The tubing is also slit open on one side along its entire length, which allows you to insert cables from the side, rather than feeding them into the tube to be pulled all along the length.
    I think that putting your headset cable(s) inside this kind of tubing, and anchoring the tubing to the headset (and the pulley system if you have one) instead of the cable itself, would take a lot of stress off the cable.
    Ideally though, I think it would be be good if the cable itself had a spring shape for about a third of a meter, or one foot, right at the end where it plugs into the headset. The same kind of spring shape seen on the cords for corded telephones, and small radio transmitters to connect the microphone to the rest of the equipment. These spring shapes are better suited to being moved around a lot, and even twisted. Because they can be twisted with much less stress, I think they would be a great choice for relieving mechanical stress right where it's needed most: close to the plug, where it must match the rotation and position of the headset cable socket exactly. For the remaining length of the cable, it can be the normal, straight shape, which should be anchored by a clip if the cable is deemed strong enough on its own, or encased in plastic tubing if it's not strong enough on its own, with the tubing being anchored to the headset instead of the cable.
    I think this could be done without having to replace the entire current stock of cables, by using a simple, short cable extension on the end of the current cables, which has the desired spring shape.
    If someone wants to let Valve know about this, be my guest! I'd rather stop everyone suffering than horde the idea to myself in the vain hope of wringing money out of it somehow. They can have the idea for free. Maybe it will encourage them to keep improving their hardware when they don't have to constantly send out replacements.

One thing I recently picked up was the "chilldex" and I'm honestly quite surprised at how much more comfortable the headset is, with just the addition of small fans to pull the heat out. The other thing I've done that's improved the quality of life, is the installation of small, rubber o-rings between the speaker pod and where it mounts to the HMD. Keeps the speaker pods securely in place during Beatsaber sessions, and is super easy to do.

    Tips is to put on the wrist straps and then put on the headset (avoid drops). The motor in the base stations are sensitive to heat, so I let my four 2.0 base stations power down (green light to blue light). Wait some seconds and then cut the power so they can cool down. But I only had them running for 9 months, will report back when more time has passed.
    I also wipe the controllers and headset after each use with a dry and smooth towel to remove sweat and oil that comes from your hands. As oil cause damage to plastic over time.

      With effort. Going through an RMA process takes time to process and effort for your part to send and receive stuff. It can get annoying and for those living outside of the US and supported countries, it would actually cost you money to go through the RMA especially now with shipping rates going through the roof because of obvious reasons.

    Do the base stations make noise when running (isn't there something spinning inside)? How much power do they consume?

    • @jatoxo
      @jatoxo 3 роки тому

      Yes they make noise. Some people say it's annoying, some say they don't notice it. There was a thread that meantioned you can slightly change their operating frequency in Steam which can make the noise less annoying. Power draw should be around 5W each, at least that's what I found on the 1.0 lighthouses.

      Clean it on the reg with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and it will stay shiny :)
      I also recommend cleaning the lenses before every play session (circular, from the inside out slowly) if you keep them smushed up against your eyes.
      Sweat is the enemy of the glue moisture barrier seal under the lens rubber gaskets, be sure to air your headset out if you notice a sweat coming on. Removing the clear plastic faceplate when you jack in helps it stay cooler also.

    • @Begohan1234
      @Begohan1234 3 роки тому

      @@AM1N4L agreed. I've been trying to tell people this and I wish thrill was more careful or at least made it known that his issues are due to gross mistreatment, and not the typical user who may treat it like they couldn't afford another. That glue doesn't just come out from being warm, it comes out from molesting the rubber gasket while cleaning the lenses, pushing your eyebrows against it while playing, and sweating in the headset. Did you see the giant sweat/water damage ring around thrills lenses? It's ridiculous.

    • @SuperPeteJames
      @SuperPeteJames 3 роки тому

      I am a moderate user and yes, you need to treat the controllers with care. The triggers are fragile and its human nature to mash down on them during tense moments. Unfortunately there are small plastic parts holding the whole thing together.

    One very good advice with the index headset is when you are done, unplug the cable and wrap it around the headset. This will prevent the cable from kinking up, and will help the life expectancy of the cable.
    I bought mine shortly after the first stimulus check came out back in April, when they finally managed to get the Index restocked.
    Aside from the triggers slightly squeaking and my left thumbstick having a very small dead zone when moving horizontally, haven't had a problem with it. Although it is disconcerting that you went through 5 controllers. Since Valve expects you to grip it alot, you would think they would made it more durable to compensate

    Well said. I've had to go through 6 RMAs with the Index controllers and now the my warranty is up they are not doing anything for me. I've figured out how to fix the thumbstick drift by actually replacing the thumbstick component. I'm going to be uploading a video soon explaining the process as well as possibly offering a service for anyone that needs thumbstick drift fixed in case they'd rather not do their own repairs.
