Best effin comment ever.
Yes , they named the first number after it 😉
After this album, you may as well back track to Kill Em All and then Ride the Lightning. Leave no Metallica album unheard.
Why. Metallica is a good album. My favourite is justice but come on now. Lulu ive seen is bad yes.
@@dapaintbrush6965 I have no issues with any Metallica album, I like them all. I'm simply suggesting he should start from the beginning and do all of them. That's all.
i would be nice that after this album, he could react to kill em all
That would be cool
But I just want him to get to HTSD, since that was the album that got me into Metallica and metal in general. It’s easily my favorite album and he will be mind blown when he hears Atlas

Not me just laughing uncontrollably as I heard him say that

Lmao

Don't worry Alex, the album didn't have a bass guitar to play it either....
There’s barely any bass on this album unfortunately
I remember exactly where I was, in my car and what stoplight I was at in my hometown the first time I heard the video version (with clips from the movie) of this song. Hearing the haunting voices panning from speaker to speaker in my car. I was in a trance. I just sat there and let my mind be blown.
you know a song is fucking amazing when it stops you in your tracks and covers you in goose bumps
I was on a hay ride in small town Missouri and older high schooler had a jam box and 98.9 the rock was playing it out of Kansas City.. I heard this and thought WTFF is that? I Was hooked..I was in 7th grade..Will never forget it..
First time I ever heard One, I was in high school and was home watching MTV when the video came on. I was completely in awe and I think my jaw was on the floor. Absolute genius - such sophisticated musical artistry with such gorgeous melodies and harmonies against power packed hard driving metal.
I remember seeing the "World Premiere" as MTV billed it then... good days indeed back in those years...
I remember where i was too. Crazy how you can hear a song and it takes you to a different time. I was 10 years old or so and it was the late 80s. I remember my buddy and i were standing in line at a movie theater and he takes this tape out of his pocket, yes cassette tape lol, it was the first time i saw the cover of justice. He played the tape in his moms car when she picked us up after the movie. Blackened came on and i thought it was the greatest thing ever. We got back to his house and eye of the beholder was on. His mom let us stay in the car and finish the tape. Shortly after that, i remember seeing the video to One at my buddies from church house. It was the greatest thing i had ever seen. That was my introduction to metallica. I then found out they had 3 albums before this. Holy shit! In order to buy these other 3 tapes as well as my own copy of And justice for all, i would collect golf balls in the canyon right outside the golf course and then sell them 4 for a dollar to the golfers thru the fence. I just smoked a fat bowl and im writing a book to yall 😅
It's a spiritual experience when they play "One" live. It really is.
Feeling the heat and compression wave from the pyrotechnics is awesome during this song.
Fing right, I saw them in back in the day 94. They finished the set plus the encore, killed the lights then came back and nailed this song.
Would've seen them last year but covid crap canceled the damn show.
Well, it is more like a spiritual experience when Metallica plays period... It doesn't even matter what they play. The whole energy level of the room/arena/concert just changes when Metallica comes on stage. I have seen some crazy good and famous warm up acts for them, but when these dudes come on stage, the whole energy of the arena just goes to the 17th level straight and keeps on ascending... And after the three hour show they put on, where you have just run your body through like 3 times, you aren't even tired... It is a weird thing. I have not experienced anything like this with any other band...
@@timometsanoja9666 100% Fact! I've seen Metallica live over 30 times and the way they can "unite" everyone from every backgroud and profession is unparalleled.
The intro to One never fails to give me chills it's both beautiful and hauntingly tragic
I'm glad you used the word melodic. It's what elevates Metallica. Other heavy bands have a lot going for them in rhythm and intensity, but Metallica wins because their writing at the same time has so much melody in it. Nothing quite compares. Remember folks, melody is King.
Melody and transition

About a year ago, I was picking my son up from work. This song came on the radio, and I cranked it and we just cruised around, both of us screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs. That was a bonding moment.

super excited to see his reaction to Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow, and To Live Is To Die.... for my money, the 3 best tracks on the album.
Pulled for you!!
@@Todrick451 Harvester of Sorrow was always my favorite song live, the album doesn't do it justice but watching them play that live in '89, '92, and '93 oh man! smh! Thing is it's the one song they cannot play right to save their lives and it kills me every time I hear them try it post '93. : (
Yes can't wait!!..by far my favorite song from Justice
Shortest Straw!!!
Should have done the full studio version. No distractions. Anyone else think he should do the last two songs together? Nothing hits like 'Dyers Eve' out of nowhere.
Yeah they are pretty much a 2 for 1 and it quickly transitions.
He should listen to both tracks combined for the epic transition
Personally, I think the video version of the song is superior. The added clips flush it out much more than the studio version.
Yeah Dyers Eve is one of my all time favourites of theirs, and it does smack you in the face after the calm ending to To Live is to Die 🤘
I agree. It was meant to be listened to that way. On vinyl, it's the only way.

It's cute how Alex thinks that the machine gun drum part is played with hands.
Well eventually Lars is striking the snare with 16th notes along with the double kick..

This song was the bane of many Guitar Hero gamers. One of the most difficult songs to play on Guitar Hero III.
Everything is fine, it's just that damned solo, and yeah I remember because I've killed a guitar from it, and this was back in like 08 for me lol
This is one of the very few songs where I recommend the video along with it. Such a haunting video with the masterpiece of a song. Perfectly directed and produced. Scared the shit out of me as a kid growing up watching MTV but couldn't turn it off either.
I agree I just don’t like how they use so much audio from the movie it covers up the music. Little less is more
Back in the time when MTV was actually about music and played music videos.
Hell ya
Not only that but Metallica didn't even give a f**k to film a music video for their first 3 albums lol. Music videos are missed but to Metallica at the time, they saw it as a corporate rock waste of their time. Interesting that they would go on to be right about internet music streaming as well.
Does anyone know what the M now stands for? Or is that their name because that's what people know and they're too lazy and uncreative enough to come up with something more fitting?

The first time i saw them in concert was June 27, 1996 in Kansas City, MO. It was the first time they played songs from Load album live. When it was their time to start, they turned all the lights off so it was pitch black and they played the sounds of war for probably 5 minutes or so before the lights burst on and they started playing ONE. It was amazing.

Me: GOOD ALEX, GOOD...
I remember when I went to Metallica as my first ever 'proper' concert back in 98. The stage was black and then those first four notes of "One" ring out from Kirk. A green tinted spotlight illuminates Kirk's silhouette surrounded by wisps of smoke. In that moment I knew I'd found my genre. This was what I was going to listen to for the rest of my life. That night, my whole life changed and I've never looked back

I was waiting for this “one”. Welcome to the Metallica fan family Alex. 🤘🏻
There is also a hidden meaning to the lyrics, Howard stern clicked on to it. It's about James. His father left the family home when he was about 13 and then his mother died when he was about 16. He has said many times that he felt anyone he grew attached to would abandon him. Even Cliff dying in 1986 must have left him with a simular feeling.
Hope for Ride the lightning album next
I love watching Alex react to Metallica. I'm 51yo, in 1983 when I was 13yo I bought Kill Em All.. I had no idea what to expect but it blew me the fuck away! The whole concert is epic especially the song “ The Thing That Should Not Be”
The previous 3 records laid the foundation for Metallica's friggin launch. This record got mainstream attention because of this video. Setting the stage for the mega-hit, Black Album.
I'd agree with this. I still wonder to this day, if Metallica didn't have The Black Album when they did, and me getting it when I did would I have gotten to Metallica and into Metallica. I went TBA, Load, Re Load, then someone let me borrow MoP... after experiencing that one I got their back catalog up to that point and then continued on. After experiencing those earlier works I get the pre-TBA and post-TBA arguments about them but I like all of their albums and I think the only bad one has been St. Anger. I think my favorites are TBA, Garage Inc, MoP, and AJFA.
@@purplebeard1526
I grew up listening to the Black Album. It came out about 2 months before I was born. I had the same path you did for the most part. The black album first and then listened to their next few records when they came out. After S&M, I went back and listened to their old stuff.
I dont mind St. Anger, at least the first 4 or 5 songs. After that its pretty hard to get through. I respect it though because of what they, mainly James, were going through at that time. Lulu, even though its not a Metallica record is easily the worst thing they ever did.
If we are going studio albums, I'd go MoP, Ride, Justice, Black Album, Hardwired. Kill 'em all is damn good live, but no where near as good on the studio album. If we are including S&M, I'd put S&M under only MoP.
My favorite song EVER! I remember waiting for the video to debut.
