      Some seeds sold as carpet plants that are actually hygrophila polysperma, you can actually sprinkle on top the water. They'll sink, start to sprout and actually root into the substrate, all under water. Probably not the best results though.

    I am setting up a 75 gallon tank with a mangrove swamp theme, it will have a large school of Tiger Barbs. Being a cheap guy, I will be using the MadMark aquascaping method ie: collecting dead branches from the woods behind my house. The painting java moss on the "mangrove roots' is the perfect solution for me.

    Thanks a ton for the video! I just got back from the LFS where I was going to only get some snails and did an impulse purchase of a 6g frag tank with a piece of driftwood and some shrimp soil to go with it. I've been watching video's here and there so decided to go with that route and steal some plants from my large tank. I learned a ton from this video so thank you!

    Omg 😂😂😂😂 thank you so much for being real about this. I have just gotten into ponds and fish, aquatic plants and now aquascaping aquariums and I have not felt zen yet lol. I love it and find it interesting, love learning and finagling with things, but my husband swears I am hating every second! 😅I keep insisting it’s part of the process and it’s fine, I just haven’t reached the zen part of aquascaping yet! I just added seiryu stone to an already set up tank 😭 and it was probably four days of my messing with the rocks on the table before I decided on an idea, then another 40 minutes staring at them in the tank and moving them around. Still not 100% sold on the layout but I figure I just need more plants! But I’m glad I’m not alone and a pro like yourself can admit this is frustrating rather than pretending it’s so easy like you see in most videos. Also, can we talk about the aquascaping tweezers??? I am about to toss mine out the window, all they seem to do is hook on to my plants for dear life and bring them back out of the substrate! I’m usually griping and grumbling at the tank asking them “are you serious???” And end up jamming my whole arm in the tank to fix things 😅

      Can i ask about your moss painting technique how fine should I chop up the java moss for it to propagate? Also did you mix with anything else other than water? I'm asking this because I've seen other UA-camrs put yoghurt in their moss mixture. What is the difference?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  3 роки тому

      You can use yoghurt. It helps fertilize the moss. Just chop it like you would parsley for a garnish.

    I had the same issue with my aquascape, it eluded me time after time. Day after day. I drew what I wanted on paper at work and at home. Until I went outside and hiked and saw a fallen tree that landed almost like nature intended. I’m not a philosophical person, but in my understanding of nature by its very nature is chaotic. I finalized my aquascape as a fallen tree in a creek bed. It was perfect.

    Thanks for the video! Best UA-cam video on DSM I think. Question: did you trim the HC right after you flooded the tank? Would you recommend trimming off ALL the leaves? Would that kill them? Thanks again.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 років тому

      Thanks for the compliment! :) Yes, it's highly suggested that you do. The HC would have grown pretty decently thick during the emersed period. So you want to give it a good trim so that the root don't rot. If you trim all the leave and just leave the stems intact it will grow back. It would probably grow back even more full if you did that. The problem is it take a lot of time to do that but it won't harm the plants. It would actually be better in the sense it'll grow out more.

    What are your thoughts on slowly filling the tank over the course of a week or 2. This would allow the plants to slowly get used to the light levels being reduced by the water rather then just dropping it down immediately. Might also help the roots survive the flooding

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  2 роки тому +1

      That works as well. Different technique but the concept it that light will reach the carpet more intensely with lower water and grow out faster that way. The carpet growth will level out once the tank is almost full. Just make sure to start with the plant already grown submersed or you'll experience die back in the first 2 or 3 weeks.

    Great teaching and tips, Sifu. Can you do "seeding" grass to form the carpet?. The question that I don't get answered is, "will that lasts once you fill the tank?". Thanks.

      It really depends on the seeds you get. There's lots of sellers out there that are selling you seed that aren't really what they say they are.

      It can be die back but I know my HC did that around the 3 week period and it just popped back and exploded after the 5th week. If it's not totally out of control, you might want to just wait it out. Make sure the lights not too close to the substrate either.

    Should I put my stem plants in during the dry start method? I’m not sure if I should since they would just droop downwards

  • @nubletten

    Would a non dry start with co2 be just as good? Would love to see a side by side comparison without any trimming of plants or water change untill good water parameters.
    I'm considering doing this in my 2kL all natural aquarium with only sump and a full size bookshelf of hydroponic strawberries. Caveat, if my small scale trial run with water strawberries dont work.

    • @TheWaterBox

      You can grow HC as long as you can provide it with the popper environment. DIY will work and help. You'll get better results with pressurized Co2 only because you can control it easier. I don't know what 2x 20watt outdoor lamp means. I have to actually look at the specs.

    Such a great video! Question??
    Do i have to use co2 for DTM? (I'm in the planning stages for my first planted tank. 8.5 gl. For my first go at this, I'm not going to use co2, so a simple tank setup) So does this mean I should not use the DMS?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 років тому

      It depends on what you're trying to grow. If you're using DSM, then you're trying to establish and grow a carpet. Most carpeting plants are high maintenance so most of the time you will need Co2 to keep it going. But with a small 8.5, you might be ok. What are you trying to grow?

    • @TheWaterBox

      The glass tubing is lily pipes. Just do a search on amazon or ebay for "Aquarium Glass Lily Pipes" and tons of results should pop up. Thanks for watching! 😀

    I tried the dry start method after watching all your inspiring videos, and into my 2nd week after watching couple of other videos got into painting java moss (yoghurt method) on driftwood. Now I have white mould starting to show up in my driftwood alone. While it might be harmless, it's killing the looks. Please suggest a way to get rid of it?

    Question… I also have a 20 long from the dollar a gallon sale big box store. I followed your link to the lighting and I just want to make sure it’s the correct one? The link leads to the 20” instead of 30”.

      Make sure to switch to the 30" one. The amazon links sometimes links to a product with different options and lands on the wrong one.

    I have a 190l tank that I am about to setup abit like yours using this method, my only concern is that I want to use liquid co2 and not high tech after the 10 weeks, is it possible maintain a monte carlo carpet with liquid at a high dose at the start then lower it down every week till its at the dosage recommended. Great video btw, very interesting especially the moss painting.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  3 роки тому

      Monte Carlos my be easy but "liquid Co2" which I'm assuming you mean stuff like Flourish Excel doesn't really work. You can try all you want but I don't recommend it:
      Does Excel Work: ua-cam.com/video/WXt9zGqYPQ4/v-deo.html
      DSM without Co2: ua-cam.com/video/IZBQsayMwOk/v-deo.html

    Thank you for sharing this great video and patiently filming it for us 😀👍🏻🌱 Can I do this method in a low- tech tank where I will not be using CO2?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  3 роки тому +2

      Probably not. The carpet used here requires high co2 and if you try something like Dwarf Hair Grass that doesn't require high Co2, you need to compensate the time from dry to being flooded to ease them into losing all that co2 to grow. There are other techniques such as filling the tank slowly over weeks but I've never tried that.
