Update: Video and parts recommended in Steve's video were a huge success in my bathroom project. My installation of a new American Standard Cadet toilet was extremely easy and cost effective. He is a rock star in my house. Thank you very much.
It's great how you go the extra mile and clean while you work. A lot of plumbers would just plop the new toilet on top of the old dirt and call it good. I also love those easy to remove seats. It makes cleaning so much easier.
Yes but notice he put the dirty paper towels the toilet drain or whatever you want to call it and didn't even bother to remove them before putting the new toilet in place
What a fun intro on this instructional video -- the good morning doggy dance, getting ready to go to work! :-) Thanks for the instruction. Great camera work ... we can see every detail of each step.
Thank You for posting this video. I'm renovating my bathroom and guess what kind of flange is in there? Rusted and Rotten. I can tell you're a good man just by the way you talk to your dog! Kudos.
My parents added a second floor in-law apartment to their home some years ago and the plumber installed a steel toilet flange. It lasted maybe ten years before rotting away. I used a hobby motor tool to carve away the PVC part of the flange and installed a PVC flange. The motor tool works great too on those brass bolts that secure the toilet tank.
Liked all the install except the tank bolts that were not double nutted (one on the under side of the tank, and the one on the under side of the base to secure) cant tell you how many times i get tank to bowl leaks because the seal inside the tank has rotted. they make seals for the underside of the tank that you nut as well... it makes removing the tank and keeping it water tight possible.
If you see a rotted subfloor, do you stop and tell them to get a carpenter, or do you cut out the rotted area, replace the wood yourself, and finish the repair?
I just did one of these today, same Oatey flange. I' have always installed the wax ring to the WC first. Nothing like replacing a metal ring, with well, a metal ring.
I thought you hated those? I watch every video, I love your channel. I learn something new everyone, I've been been a Plumber for 5 years now and your knowledge is priceless. Thanks so much for sharing your videos!
Appreciate the video. I assume that the floor was wood since you screwed the screws into it to hold the flange down. How would you hold the flange down to a concrete floor? Thanks.
I used tapcon screws. My toilet was rocking, thought it was bad wax, so pulled it and found the flange cracked. I have concrete sub floor and used three tapcons in a triangle (the new plastic flange had 6 or 8 holes for screws.
Damaged flanges are a pain in the ass to deal with. I’ve replaced a few & use the Danco Hydroseat flange replacement , which is easy to install & makes sure the toilet stays solid on the floor and doesn’t leak. I don’t know what your thoughts are on this product, but it always seems to work well for me. Like you, I always clean up after I finish a job.
did you screw into the tile?? what type of screws did you use to get them in like that? wouldn't you need a pilot hole first or some kind of anchor/fastner?
I can take a hot bath all day long, but if I take a hot shower, the condensation comes out from under the toilet and on to the floor . I have no fan in my bathroom. Any ideas?
nive video steve....what type of screws did u use to tighten down the repair ring was it a wood floor for regular screws or concrete sub floor that u used sum different type of screws??
I was wondering the same thing Steve. Galvanized concrete screws or did you pre drill through the tile off film? I have a concrete floor and using a solid repair ring from Sioux Chief but I'm not sure I want to drill down into the floor so close to the edge of the hole. BTW, I just started watching your videos and you do a great job on them!
Wouldn't it have been nice not to use your gloved hands to handle the waste around the broken flange/wax ring with a plastic/metal scraper and clean the area before starting the repair. And then, change your gloves if you decide to pick up the trash using the gloves? There's a bit of nasty transferring the mess to the toilet, seat/cover and parts like the flush handle. I suppose I work a bit different. 8-) >...Lastly, the "slow-close" seat is not as great as it looks. It does not account for one who has to lift the seat and cover to pi$$ standing. It's ok just to close the cover for guests, but otherwise, the top or BOTH pieces would have to be raised up before/after the pi$$ just to avoid slamming.
Steven - Can you share with me the parts you used to repair the flange? I've got a similar situation where I have to use an expandable flange and it's near impossible to find. The same is true for the bolts you use to mount the toilet. Thank you.
Thank you. I also found for the SetFast No Cut Closet Bolts on eBay as well. Should be an easy job now. www.ebay.com/itm/SetFast-No-Cut-Closet-Bolts-2-1-4-Two-Packs-2-pairs-/252802125425?hash=item3adc2e4e71:g:crIAAOSwax5YvtiK
Hey Steve! I've got a rotten metal flange and it's set below the tile. So I need to raise it. Would you use the repair ring and then one of those lift kits you show in one of your other videos? The remains of the old flange don't want to come off the pipe (it's PVC).
Okay, give it up. What spray mix did you use, please? Another informative Lavimonere video 👍👍. Love the baby dog. One of mine has separation anxiety, too. He does do better when he is with his pal, another 6 pound Yorkie mix, but it's not a complete fix.
dude you got a new subscriber! this was great! Man I live in a condo on a 2nd story floor and neighbor said water is coming down just a little when a flush. looks like I'm redoing a wax ring and possibly a flange tomorrow. I wish you could do it! I'd love for a professional to take care of it since I have little plumbing experience. The videos are helpful however thanks! Wish me luck!
Our previous homeowners installed a new toilet over a rotten flange and fucked it up so badly the wax ring was half blocking the pipe. I am here to figure out how to fix it
Good repair with a minimum of repair parts. I'm sure she'll love the slow close top and never hear that loud bang, from the occasional slip of the hand. Have you ever seen a broken toilet from a toilet seat banging down on the top from a slip?
Nice pastel blue toilet. I worked on a house once that had a pastel blue in one bath and a pastel yellow in another. This is the first time I’ve seen one of those since then. I don’t know why they make the key ways so small. Personally I like a little more margin for error
I love the "Why would some one not want to wear gloves" comment i just watched the This old house video on this and i was thinking the exact same thing the entire time.
I agree with your assessment you should never put paper towels down the toilet drain even if you don't have the toilet in that spot at that very moment.
+Paul Courtien (PC77) i buy them at my local hvac supply house but here is a link on ebay for them www.ebay.com/itm/Condenser-Fin-Wisk-Brush-Broom-NEW-/111901284612?hash=item1a0dd61904:g:sHgAAOxygPtS8TR-
+Michael Ponte toilet was fin just to low for her being elderly now so she wanted a handicap hight toilet she made a wise choice changing it i know there was a issue with the flange . but did not know it would be this bad
+dijornopizza if i was going to be down there for a long time best to wear a mask . i was down there maybe a 1/2 hour i am fine . i see black mold a lot just do not desturb it is the best bet
I am a fan of all your videos. I was curious how you made the PVC pump used for pumping out toilet tanks and bowls. I would like to make one for this purpose, being a DIY man, so I was curious what you used to make this handy tool. Keep up the great videos!
Sweet doggy. She sure loves you. I'm a dog lover too, Collies. They like to snorfull around when I'm doing things around my house, and I have to shoe them away :)
OK, so I understand why you don't like the metal flange repair rings, but you replaced it with another metal repair ring....I'm guessing your replacement is SS, which won't rot. Love those nice adjustable flange screws. How the heck did you get those flange screws to go through the tiles so easily? I'm always afraid of tightening the toilet screws down too tight and busting the toilet. Hope baby dog is doing OK (2/1/2018).....
The corroded red ring he replaced was painted steel. The big box stores sell the clam-shell type repair rings by Oatey or similar OEM's ... they're galvanized steel. Who the hell has wind chimes in the bathroom LOL. Is it a fart detection apparatus?
No, it is a fart-masking apparatus for when guests are over and they do not want to hear bathroom noises.
He did flush and nothing clogged but I was the owner I would be watching and said something.
What a fun intro on this instructional video -- the good morning doggy dance, getting ready to go to work! :-) Thanks for the instruction. Great camera work ... we can see every detail of each step.
Good solid mounting on that flange. That's not going anywhere! Great attention to detail with cleaning up the floor Steve. Job well done!
+Fireship1 this is why i never bye them adjustable metal closet flanges . i have seen this happen to many times
Thank You for posting this video. I'm renovating my bathroom and guess what kind of flange is in there? Rusted and Rotten. I can tell you're a good man just by the way you talk to your dog! Kudos.
I have a little brown mixed-breed dog I rescued and now she is my best buddy and it is funny how attached you get to those pups. Nice installation.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! All the information you shared helped me to replace our toilet. I couldn't have done it without you!
Did you drill first in the tile and put in plastic anchors??
My parents added a second floor in-law apartment to their home some years ago and the plumber installed a steel toilet flange. It lasted maybe ten years before rotting away. I used a hobby motor tool to carve away the PVC part of the flange and installed a PVC flange.
The motor tool works great too on those brass bolts that secure the toilet tank.
why don't they make those out of stainless steel so they don't rust out????
Best part of the workday is meeting the dog back in the truck!
You are just an awesome plumber, and a Master HVAC Technician!
+Don Burton thanks for watching
Don Burto
Is it better to place the wax ring over the flange, or on the bottom of the toilet first.??
What is the name of that flange ? I can't seem to find one ? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks for the courage you have given me and I guess many others. This is something I can do!
Great video, nice to have parts on the truck so you don't have to go to the parts house every time. Thanks have a good weekend.
What about caulking around the base at the floor.. Not needed?
If you see a rotted subfloor, do you stop and tell them to get a carpenter, or do you cut out the rotted area, replace the wood yourself, and finish the repair?
What are the two brass bolts you slipped into the stainless gasket? do you know the manufacturer and the size? Any specs would be helpful. Thank you.
May I suggest a bench broom and a tile sponge as well as a dust pan?
I just did one of these today, same Oatey flange. I' have always installed the wax ring to the WC first. Nothing like replacing a metal ring, with well, a metal ring.

Thank you for the fast reply. I appreciate the information.
Thanks for the video, very informative. The doggy doing the dance was precious!
Is that floor actually a linoleum floor? Looks like tile, but don't know how you could just drive screws in like that.
Damaged flanges are a pain in the ass to deal with. It's a great video but what r u thinking and doing and why? That would help. Many of us don't know what u r doing, so we guess
did you screw into the tile??
what type of screws did you use to get them in like that?
wouldn't you need a pilot hole first or some kind of anchor/fastner?
Wiliam Vandiver I'm sure he is upstairs by the way he used screw driver to break out tile and then he was using wood screws
Ah I see... now that makes sense
I can take a hot bath all day long, but if I take a hot shower, the condensation comes out from under the toilet and on to the floor . I have no fan in my bathroom. Any ideas?
do ALL flange have THAT screw?????
Nice one Steve. Those fast set bolts look like the real deal. Definitely makes the install easier
What is the brand of that flange repair ring? I cannot find it anywhere.
nive video steve....what type of screws did u use to tighten down the repair ring was it a wood floor for regular screws or concrete sub floor that u used sum different type of screws??
+Blimie Friedman they were some galvanived screws i had in the truck the new wax will cover them up well ,they should last many years
I was wondering the same thing Steve. Galvanized concrete screws or did you pre drill through the tile off film? I have a concrete floor and using a solid repair ring from Sioux Chief but I'm not sure I want to drill down into the floor so close to the edge of the hole.

I can't believe you installed the wax ring without ever cleaning the debris from off of the flange. I can't think of a better way to get a leak.
I agree. He never cleans anything. I would ever hire him.
Nice fix Steve I haven't repaired a flange in years looks good and great clean up job
+Vincent Padalino this one was rotted bad .
what type of screws do u use to drill through the tile?
What was the name of the flange kit you used??
good job as always , is plaster necessary around the toilet ... we always use plaster of Paris to seal around it... just wanna know if it's necessary
ValarMorghulis
No, never use plaster.

probably a dumb question but how are you drilling into the tile?
Nice install, Steven. Slow close, like an elevator door. Keeping the work area tidy. Baby the Florida dog!
+Randy Kocian i try to clean up under toilet makes for a better job
If you keep your truck idleing for a expanded period of time you should raise the rpm to decrease the amount of glazing you cylinderwalls. Great Job
Just curious why not use a flanged wax ring? Just asking i was always taught to use flanged rings
Six of one, half dozen of the other ... chacun a son gout ...
Paper towels in the drain, u hoping for a clogged drain job soon.
Always enjoy seeing your cute little 🐶 Molly.
Nice install, Steve. That "slow-close" seat is great.
+Richard B a bit pricey but good
Thank you for this video! It has definitely given me a good idea on how to deal with a very strange looking toilet flange.
Thanks Steve .
I watch all your vids....
Very educational and fun.
We should get a beer sometime. .
Nice, Steve. Thanks. You may want to suggest NOT tightening the bolts too much, to avoid cracking the porcelain. That would really suck!
Where did you buy those new flang?
Dude, this job was EXACTLY, PRECISELY what I needed!! Thanks!!
Steven did you call the toilet flange bolts fast set?
are you using their toilet paper to wipe up the mess?
What Happen to remember what model toilet that is?
Hey Steve! I've got a rotten metal flange and it's set below the tile. So I need to raise it. Would you use the repair ring and then one of those lift kits you show in one of your other videos? The remains of the old flange don't want to come off the pipe (it's PVC).
I like your videos, Steve. You should start a reality show! You've got me talking like you now.
+Mark Brunell thanks for the support & for watching
Okay, give it up. What spray mix did you use, please? Another informative Lavimonere video 👍👍. Love the baby dog. One of mine has separation anxiety, too. He does do better when he is with his pal, another 6 pound Yorkie mix, but it's not a complete fix.
what is the tallest toilet available?
Steve, is it true its not good to flush wipes down the toilet
+dijornopizza only toilet paper goes in toilet,,,,,,,,, no whips
why do you wear gloves?

Did you leave the rag in the drain?
+barewolf its toilet paper not a rag
+steven lavimoniere - believe it or not, I finally decided that must be so. It was bugging me...thanks
Nice work steven,What brand is this Toilet(water closet)
OK i can see in the tank it's a Gerber, very nice job
Nice pastel blue toilet. I worked on a house once that had a pastel blue in one bath and a pastel yellow in another. This is the first time I’ve seen one of those since then. I don’t know why they make the key ways so small. Personally I like a little more margin for error
This is exactly what I found today while I did mine today, orange plastic and everything. Thanks for the advice!
I love the "Why would some one not want to wear gloves" comment i just watched the This old house video on this and i was thinking the exact same thing the entire time.
You should not dump the tissues inside the hole. Should be put in a plastic bag and throw it into the dustbin.
I agree with your assessment you should never put paper towels down the toilet drain even if you don't have the toilet in that spot at that very moment.
It’s toilet paper you dolts!!
Love your little dog, I am a dog lover anyone that loves a dog like you do cant be a bad person.
I like the quote from Bill Murray. Paraphrased: "I don't trust people who don't like dogs but when a dog doesn't like a person, I trust the dog."
Hitler loved his dog...
Just sayin'...
Where do you get the brushes

Здравствуйте. Из какого материала сделан уплотнитель под туалет?
Enjoyed the video, Steve. You are a good Plumber.
great job again Steve. I remember back in the seventies when I was building my house those colors like blue and Harvest Gold we're very popular
+Michael Ponte toilet was fin just to low for her being elderly now so she wanted a handicap hight toilet she made a wise choice changing it i know there was a issue with the flange . but did not know it would be this bad
steve, I forgot to ask on the last video, the one that had lots of mold on the wall, is it dangerous for you to be down there with out a mask?
Didn't even know they made new rings for those. I always cut em out and put in a long shank insert flamge
Great informative video! Really helpful for DIY guys like me! Love the doggie dance, my chowowa does the same thing!
Joe Caliri New Portland, Maine
what kind of flange is that?
Good sir, I love your dog!! She is very cute!
I have a cat and I don't know what I would do without her!!
Nice work, you make it all seem so easy!
you related to super mario by any chanse? Next level brother, good work!

Excellent job steve, looks great .
Why you wear gloves
Mr L how come you always get the easy clean jobs, not another blue toilet
Why do you wear gloves? I see no point man. A little E.Coli would never hurt! ;) great video as always man. The more I watch, the more educated I get to start doing my own repair work around my house. I love the effort you put into your content! I live about 45 minutes from you (on cape cod)
That looks like an inside or street 3" flange.
Hey Steve. Those screws didn't grab jack. C-mon man. Your better than that. You just dumped all that crap down the pipe? Ya lost your quality workmanship edge my friend. That was a jack-off job. And ya captured it on video. Take a week off, ya need a rest. I always liked your channel P.S. Hit Home-d for a dust pan and a few garbage bags
Exactly the way i would repair!Nice job Steve!!!
steve , have you ever ran out of gloves right when you were already at someones house
+dijornopizza a few times i have 2 boxes of gloves in truck so that will not happen
This man takes pride in his work, good one
Your dog Molly is the cutest!
is Darth Vader doing the install??? Whats with the heavy breathing...??
Your videos are awesome. Good camera work too. I can see it all. Helped me diagnose and fix things just by watching!
If I didnt want to do this myself, what would you charge for a toilet replacement?
