What makes Get Shorty a terrific movie, among other things, is that the actors had a blast making it.
The real question is how come they made a sequel that looked more like an exploitation film?
Fun Fact: John Travolta and James Gandolfini actually go way back. Both Jersey natives, Travolta’s dad use to sell tires to Gandolfini’s dad.
And if you go far enough both forefathers were centurions in Julius Cesar army…

Man, Travolta really could pull off a convincing tough guy. There are plenty of actors who can't e.g. Pierce Brosnan, Clive Owen. I wonder what kind of real life experience Travolta drew upon to be so badass.
Brosnan can, sometimes. He's hit and miss. A miss as Bond.

When I saw this movie at the theater had no idea what it was about. Who knew it was one of the coolest movies I ever remember seeing.

Watch him fight Christian Slater in Broken Arrow. Travolta looks natural, Slater looks ridiculous. It's even worse when they fix it for Slater

They say Travolta insisted on doing the junk grab scene again and again even when the camera weren't rolling.
He lost although he had the high ground. Strange...
He took his eye off his opponent. Usually fatal.

Characters are everything. Here's the test: write the dialogue in this scene down. It's OK but it's nothing more than a conversation. But put it in the mouths of these characters played by these actors and you have magic. That's casting and acting right there.
1:10 The most realistic double take ever. Compare John's to say,one by Mel Gibson,who has the worst double take in Hollywood. He's a decent actor otherwise though.
As usual, Chili was right. It turns out Ray wasn't a movie fan.
Seeing Travolta up against Hackman, Gandolfini, Lindo is like panning to the last member of a quartet and it's a braying donkey

Someone just threw a guy down the stairs and everyone in the eatery acted as if that was nothing. So much for realism.
That IS realism. Try it. If it's over in a hurry like that no one cares. People hardly look up, probably thought he slipped. No shouting, no noise, no one asking for help.
