I like fall pruning, as it allows 1st year growth limbs to become stronger, plus it makes fruiting buds start and get a chance to set before winter. If you don't it can be 2-3 years later to make fruiting buds. It also allows you to have good fruiting buds closer to the main tree structure instead of out on the end of a limb. You can make better scaffolding, on laterals, and you can direct the tree outward "The Importance of Summer Pruning" is a good video on UA-cam explaining this. I do leave a few for graphing the next year, or air layering to start a new tree of that species.

Main problem with apple trees is fungus not bacterial. Nothing he shows here is anything unusual. From my prospective it would however be better for a back yard grower to use open vase center and a much lower trunk. Trees would be a lot easier to work and get better sunlight compared to high trunk and central leader which throws more shade over lower scaffold.
I’ve heard that you should avoid cutting more than 25-30 percent. Is that something you’re concerned with? Also do you avoid topping or is it better to keep the tree manageable?
Normally, no. As long as those trees are dormant...but this has been a strange winter and those trees may be coming out of dormancy with the warm weather.
@@SharkeysFloralGreenhousessomeone told me not to prune until the frost is gone. Now I have learned that the trees should be dormant. Of course I am going to believe you guys but now I am stuck with a tree that badly needs pruning as the branches broke because of weight last year. Just bought the house last fall. Please suggest should I prune it now or just wait until next winter?
@@SharkeysFloralGreenhouses I live in the Balkans, today I pruned my trees, they are still dormant, but not for long and frost is expected in the next weeks. What would happen in there is frost when they are not dormant but are pruned? Sometimes frost knows to whipe out all the flowers on our trees, and when that happens, we don't harvest even a single fruit. The place where I live knows to have frost even in april...
@@nikolathegreat1526 There is a product that can be sprayed of blooms if frost is going to occur that night which will usually save them from freezing. Can’t think of company offhand. If you cannot find it, reply here and I will find manufacture’s name for you.
Why do you have so much trunk on those trees? Why not have short 18” trunk then open center. Would get sunlight better and could just roundup under the trees to save a lot of mowing since the roundup lasts four time as long as mowing.
I watched several videos about pruning apples trees, this one is perfect for beginners, very easy to catch and reassured
Thank you very much!

What a terrific way to inhibit bacterial infections in your trees. ❤
Thank you!

How about pruning the height, I cut my center branch at about 15 ft.
Yes, you can top the trees off to keep them at a height that works better for you to pick.
My trees are only been in the ground since last april .Are they to young to prune?
Yes, let them grow and get established for a year or so.
So if I am in a tropical climate ...I should never prune? 😮
Is it too late to prune now in late February?
Normally, no. As long as those trees are dormant...but this has been a strange winter and those trees may be coming out of dormancy with the warm weather.
Ya, we have had several days of high 30's, low 40's and that worried me about them waking up. Thank you.@ysFloralGreenhouses

Can the frost cause damage if you prune to early?
Certainly possible if the trees are not dormant. That is why we wait until the coldest time of year.

Roundup by your fruit?
