Getting started in illustration is so hard, but you're giving some really good tips! A strong portfolio and reaching out proactively to potential clients has worked great for me. I love your artwork, Asia!
You don’t necessarily need a degree anyway. It can look good on a resume, but it’s really the quality of the portfolio they look for. You don’t really have to go to college to learn fine arts or illustration. You’re local arts center, if it has art classes, and courses online can help you learn the fundaments and build from the basics. Reaching out to pros and friends for advice on organizing a great portfolio on being active on social media is a great way to get noticed.
I too really want to learn and do digital illustration but the problem for me is I don't have and iPad nor a laptop to start with and looking at the illustrates like you I feel really motivated to do but just because I don't have a source to start I can't do it.
Funny how many interior designers turn into illustrators. i am at the same stage and never thought i could earn money with my drawings. But slowly my illsutration buisness is starting to pick up and i am so thankful for that. In all honesty, the architecture and interior architecture is really hard. Working 12 hours a day and being treated like shit was normal. That's why i decided to take a step back from interior design. Instead i found art.I don't regret going full freelance. I can totally understand everything you are saying, because it is not easy being a freelancer. Especially during these covid times. Thank you for this inspirational video! I needed this today.

I checked out your artworks, they are beautiful! I majored in 3D animation in school and graduated last year. After almost a full year in a 2D/3D generalist job, I reconsidered pursuing 3D animation and instead, I'm interested to pursue 2D illustration as it was basically my first love, it was my hobby all along and I would love to be able to support myself by doing works that I enjoy! It´s so cool your work Asia. I just found out your channel randonly and as right now I am seriously thinking quiting my job as fabric pattern illustrator at a factory here in Brasil. My days felt unmotivated and I belive that I have lots of potential. I have a degree in Graphic Design and just finished my college but jobs for those areas at least here where I live is shorten and very badly paid. Your video just fueled my wishes and will keep working hard to finally handling the pink envelop at HR.

Thank you so much 😊 and what you mention happens a lot, but my advice is not to listen to those thoughts at all and just do your thing! We all have this kind of thoughts and it really works better if we just ignore them and do the things we love the most!:)

31 here, and am considering going for Illustration Design for Fashion, Independently. I went for music, had two albums out (still continue to do so) but I have a day job which has kept me financially stable. However, I realized that I don’t want to keep continuing the path, and wanted to stimulate my own needs, and make a living doing something I know I will love to do in my own leisure time. Here I am, having an idea, know the risk, but not afraid. Did it several many times, and it all works out well in the end.

Thank you, I've been working as a decor artist for 15 years now (background in fine arts too 🌺). I decided to be on contract with my company in 2019, off a steady payroll with flexible hours. That gave me time to invest 3 years in building my own clients. I'm investing in a professional website to boost my client outreach... persistence is a major point and yes, I'm extremely needy for a good social network, this is why I keep in touch with my old company; they're my group of misfits.
I hope things are going good with you as you're running a small business. Here in Canada, many small business owners, especially those who are in the hospitality industry, have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Even I had to be laid off. Love your illustrations. I can imagine how you must be proud of having designed them. I will be a freelance designer in the future, aside from my full-time job. So, thank you for being inspirational.

@@michelle9182 i think they both have their perks, it would really just depend on personal preference. As an artist there's a lot of freedom to explore. Keep in mind that a graphic designer is more geared towards making logos, layouts, product / packaging design, etc. Those are some of the things that I have not really been able to apply in my projects as an illustrator except for layouts (book design) wherein i made both book layout and the illustrations. It does help having technical knowledge on design principles and software but if it's not a priority, you can simply study those on your own. I hope this helps 😊

And here I am sitting and thinking, how to gain courage and quit one of my jobs. So I can work on the weekends with my little art shop or something similar. Both jobs are in the graphic design sphere, but I'm tired of creating things that I don't feel like are mine (I do not know how to express it). And yet all those fears kick in: Am I good enough? Will I get the job done? Will people like me? Or My language barrier will push me back? etc. Even tho I'm thinking of quitting just one of my jobs. And work at weekends on my dreams. But it still so so hard to do. :( People like You Asia are inspiring! I admire your courage. And I hope one day I will also be able to tell a similar story. But now I hope for the best and to build-up courage for quitting just one of my jobs :D
Hi Bella, I totally understand where you are. My advice, you can start slowly building your portfolio, like 1hr day. Create a website, they are fairly cheap now, and build it up, slowly you will have small clients of your own, then medium clients, and by the time you realize, you are running your onw show :) 1hr a day consistently ... hope it helps

Being an freelance illustrator mostly at the beginning it’s kind of unstable, so it’s good to have some other source while you are building up your client base. It’s always good to diversify and have as many sources so you don’t have to rely on client work. Having your store for example or doing personal commissions from time to time helps mostly at the beginning. About the platforms I will have a full video up really soon ;)

Thank you, I've been working as a decor artist for 15 years now (background in fine arts too 🌺). I decided to be on contract with my company in 2019, off a steady payroll with flexible hours. That gave me time to invest 3 years in building my own clients. I'm investing in a professional website to boost my client outreach... persistence is a major point and yes, I'm extremely needy for a good social network, this is why I keep in touch with my old company; they're my group of misfits.

I hope things are going good with you as you're running a small business. Here in Canada, many small business owners, especially those who are in the hospitality industry, have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Even I had to be laid off. Love your illustrations. I can imagine how you must be proud of having designed them.
I will be a freelance designer in the future, aside from my full-time job. So, thank you for being inspirational.

@@michelle9182 i think they both have their perks, it would really just depend on personal preference. As an artist there's a lot of freedom to explore. Keep in mind that a graphic designer is more geared towards making logos, layouts, product / packaging design, etc. Those are some of the things that I have not really been able to apply in my projects as an illustrator except for layouts (book design) wherein i made both book layout and the illustrations. It does help having technical knowledge on design principles and software but if it's not a priority, you can simply study those on your own. I hope this helps 😊

And here I am sitting and thinking, how to gain courage and quit one of my jobs. So I can work on the weekends with my little art shop or something similar.
Both jobs are in the graphic design sphere, but I'm tired of creating things that I don't feel like are mine (I do not know how to express it). And yet all those fears kick in: Am I good enough? Will I get the job done? Will people like me? Or My language barrier will push me back? etc.
Even tho I'm thinking of quitting just one of my jobs. And work at weekends on my dreams. But it still so so hard to do. :(
People like You Asia are inspiring! I admire your courage.
And I hope one day I will also be able to tell a similar story. But now I hope for the best and to build-up courage for quitting just one of my jobs :D
Hi Bella, I totally understand where you are. My advice, you can start slowly building your portfolio, like 1hr day. Create a website, they are fairly cheap now, and build it up, slowly you will have small clients of your own, then medium clients, and by the time you realize, you are running your onw show :) 1hr a day consistently ... hope it helps

Hi Lis thank you so much for your nice words! I really appreciate that. Being an freelance illustrator mostly at the beginning it’s kind of unstable, so it’s good to have some other source while you are building up your client base. It’s always good to diversify and have as many sources so you don’t have to rely on client work. Having your store for example or doing personal commissions from time to time helps mostly at the beginning. About the platforms I will have a full video up really soon ;)
