You can see why Gene has been called in to fill in for a lot of bands. Besides being an awesome drummer he just seems like an all around good guy and a good hang.
That's how I knew that Dino Cazares is a shitty person, cause Gene has been playing with so many bands and never had any problems. He's able to fit in and do his work perfectly. So when they basically kicked him out from FF, that's when I realised that Dino is not just a "complicated person".
@@deran1983 yeah FF has always been one of my favorite bands and Dino a big influence on my rhythm playing. He’s got that bionic right hand from the future lol. After so many you’re like, "no honey…you’re the problem.” Lol
@@travislee9662 yes, I agree. No doubt Dino is a great guitarist with distinctive style and he has created (or helped to create) a whole genre. I even think that the lyrics from Archetype are about him ("the infection has been removed, the soul of this machine has improved").

So much mutual respect and appreciation between these drumming giants! What a motivation both those guys have been over many years to keep practicing and also be a kind, respectful and humble person!
It's like widely acknowledged that Mesguggah created a whole new genre of music/metal, and Haake is right in the center of that. And Hoglan is like obviously a huge influence, absolute legend, playing tech double pedal with the boots and old pedals just because fuck you.
"Just because fuck you" is a very apt description of how we felt when Dark Angel released Darkness Descends back in '86. Haake and Hoglan are both living legends.
Dont forget the weights!! Hoglan is an goddamn animal, and packin alot of weight himself in his former days which also adds to the insaness. I've met both of these guys and they are physically huge dudes. I still have no idea how they manage to play that level of speed and surgical precision at their age with that much flesh to sling around. Absolute legends.
Bro, I could listen to these guys talk drums forever. Like every day. Especially if they were talking technical stuff. Literally, from gear to practice routine, to specific riffs...like everything. These are two of the hardest working, respected, and best metal drummers of all time. I want a Netflix series. Call it "the haake gene". Sign me up, boys. Let's go!
I will never forget buying the "None" EP on compact disc and cranking it in my car on the way home from school. Around 1994 I believe. Then 1995 brought Destroy Erase Improve AND Death's Symbolic! I remember hearing Perpetual Black Second when I was maybe 13 years old. My brain couldn't comprehend the rhythm so the timing just sounded random to me. Years later it clicked out of nowhere, I actually "got" the rhythm and understood why people like the band so much, besides being heavy as balls. I still love table-drumming to the song while listening

Skeksis is such a sick shout out. What a fucking song. The whole "Alien" album with him and Dev is a fucking blaster. 2 absolute giants just chilling and chatting, I love it.
These guys are so great at what they do because the instrument is an extension of their personality. The drumset represents everything you dont see without it. Like Neil Peart. Humble, intelligent, well read and spoken, analytical. But behind the kit, they open up into their final form. Its why I vibe so much with their styles, I totally get it
Gene is the man. But he’s right. Tomas has been the guiding light for modern progressive heavy drumming for 25 years, long before anyone co-opted his now ubiquitous style, which remains wholly unrivalled.
i don't know about the ubiquious style. nobody even comes close in this style. some are more technical but they either lack the groove or just are not coherent in terms of style or have lame writing. nobody writes such cool drum lines. once bleed was out, everybody was hopping on to it. what does tomas do? doesn't rest on his lorries and drops clockworks and now it's ghost notes thats the shit. he's just always ahead of the game because he can write and has great feeling for coherence in art and style. and that's besides his unique approach to these beats in general
It’s funny how the most skilled drummers I’ve ever heard in the scene always say/sound like what they do isn’t anything special. Chris Turner in OAA is the same exact way when he talks about his writing
I have to say, we didn't have UA-cam, they didn't do close ups on drummers playing live in my day or their day, we had to figure out how our idols play that stuff the hard way, by trying and working at it for decades. Now kids can go on UA-cam or the like and watch live footage of you guys and study the techniques we all had to just figure out ourself, so of course a 7 year old kid has learned how to play really well at such a young age!
the problem is, if they don't go through that trial and error, they miss out on a big thing: developing your own style and sound. it's too easy to copy today and that comes with a cost.
Either drummer increases and enriches any music they are a part of. Anything I've heard either man be a part of has been not only pinnacle but signature.
