So cool you got Mårten! Tomas is the de facto band spokesperson, so it's a treat when one of the other band members makes an appearance. And it's even better when it isn't a stock interview, but a great conversation between peers instead. It was awesome learning more about the him and the band.
Yes! So nice hearing stories from another member of the band.
I wish we saw more Jens Kindman interviews. He stopped doing them a while ago unfortunately.
the image of Marten recording guitar riff ideas into his phone in the middle of a supermarket is hilarious
Had me cracking up. Very relatable too, and I always wondered if Meshuggah did stuff like that. Now I know 😁
@@SterlingSimmons22 It's amazing the juxtaposition of thinking about their on-stage vibe, where they seem like these Norse thunder gods, and then hearing Marten talk about grunting ideas into his phone and scaring the other shoppers in the produce aisle. So funny.
That was actually quite sad to hear how Marten got disheartened and sad he couldn't share his love for music when Tomas was away. It was great that Tomas had reached out to him when they were searching for a second guitarist and the two of them reunited.
everyone that tells you something else has a lich in the basement.
There's a 13 yo kid in Sweden, his dad plays in Meshuggah. That's awesome.
As a 13 year old I wish my dad was in Meshuggah
I wish 😅
@@jeromesnail 😆
Imagine being able to see them play live up close whenever you want
He is probably embarrassed.. All of his friends listen to rap, the girl he likes doest know what a guitar is.
Cool interview! Been a metal fan for over 20 years but for some reason only got into Meshuggah the last 6 months, new favourite band!
They are an incredible band
I've been into metal since the late 90's and just got into Cannibal Corpse. We're always discovering new music 🤘
Mårten is a genious song writer
This was such a treat. I LOVE Meshuggah so much it hurts. I remember the first time I heard them. I don't think I took a breath for the whole song. LOL
Their new album is everything I wanted and expected.
As always, awesome interview. Keep em coming!!!
Meshuggah are one of my top 5 favorite metal bands ever. Immutable is damn near perfection.
Its very good.
It's so obvious the language Meshuggah speaks thru their instruments are just on a higher level compared to their peers. They're not trying to make music you like. They're trying to say what they want to say. That's a whole other ****ing game boys 🤌🏻
No way!!! Our prayers have been answered ! Thank you so much Robb 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Still one of my favorite personalities in music. Met him twice and smoked a bowl or two. The best of times for me. So much love and respect for this giant 🙏🏽
Got to hang out with him and Fredrik in the rain outside their tour bus in 2005 and Tomas gave me a bag of apples. lol. The whole band is really cool and down to earth.
@@h.p.dominocus That's so cool! Is there any reason why he gave you a bunch of apples?
@@DMatt343 Til this day I have no idea, I was outside the bus talking to Fredrik and a guy from Mnemic and Tomas came out of the bus and handed me a bag of apples then went on his way. I really have no idea.
@@h.p.dominocus That's phenomenal. I love it. Band stories are the best.
Thanks for sharing.
It would be so damn cool to smoke with Märten. You can tell through some of his riffs he’s heavily influenced by Stoner/Doom metal. What tours did you meet him on?
I appreciate so much hearing this Long talk with Mårten 🙏 so heartwarming to hear about his history with Tomas 😊
Loved the vibes of two old friends catching up. Couldn't have made those stories more interesting
We need more mårten and fred interviews!!!!
Fred is really on the sidelines in the band, hasn't been involved in the songwriting process for years and literally contributed 4 leads to the new record. Not much point in interviewing him. Marten however - fuck yes, let's have more with him!!
@@gergonikk Well said, Mårten put me on the Squarepusher path with an interview years ago, wonder what he listens to nowadays.
Jens even...
@@gergonikk i get that but id love to hear about from him for his past and what its been like for him these past years since he stopped really songwriting
Awesome dude, awesome band. My introduction to Meshuggah was on the Machine Head headline tour in Manchester, England, rushed out to buy Destroy, Erase, Improve on the back of that show
Well done Rob. Seen Meshuggah a couple times, unbelievable both times. Listening to the new album yesterday just shaking my head in disbelief at some of the stuff Thomas plays. Not only that, they all seem to be the coolest guys.
Thank You for having Marten! Great to see him interviewed
I saw Mary Beats Jane, Meshuggah(Destroy Erase Improve era )and Machine Head (Burn my Eyes era with Kontos on drums) in Barcelona in 1995 it was Sick
Greetings from Norway🤘🤘🤘
I am so incredibly happy to see one of the Meshuggah guys on your podcast! Thank you so much
they've been jamming since they were 12... insane.
Scott Kelly from Neuorsis would also be really cool
Revolver would be perfect for you if want Scott Kelly.
That's a great suggestion. I've suggested Krist Novoselic, Al Jourgensen and now Pepper Kennan.
@@joshuayettou9032 I don’t think Pepper Keenan will go on this podcast. Due to his affiliation with Phil Anselmo. Plus this channel would get flooded with Phil’s fanboys.
@@elduce7166 Actually Pepper didn't like or agree with what Phil did and you'll always have trolls no matter what. That incident happened over 6 years ago now. I don't think it's that big of a deal anymore. It definitely doesn't exclude anyone whose ever been affiliated with Phil in my opinion.
@@joshuayettou9032 6 years later Phil’s stupid fanclub still goes on and on about this incident. It’s as if, someone personally harmed their dog. They are worse than Misfits fans. Pantera created this weird fanbase of faux tough guys and degenerate idiots. I’m sorry but even Machine Head at their worst are heavier than any Phil’s attempts at doing eXtrEme metal.
Absolute monster of a rhythm player! Up there with hetfield & Malcom for me.. great podcast
Fantastic interview. Such a great, peaceful, humble and an affable dude and a killer musician too. Love Meshuggah, can’t wait to see them at Royal Albert Hall 🤘🏻
What a treat!!! Machine Head & Meshuggah! Thank you, Robb!!
Can't wait for the new single!!
Can't wait for 28 may Manchester!! First time seeing them but I've been a fan since 2003, wish I could see machine head as well at some point... Keep it up Rob thanks for all the years!
Finally got to listen to the whole thing and it was amazing!
Fuck yeah. It’s gonna be awesome
Wow, AMAZING interview! It made my whole saturday night, in between i took a break and devoured all the great videos on the recording sessions of Meshuggah. Glad to have discovered this channel 🌳
I'm 38 and was in elementary school when I listened to a copy of burn my eyes. My friends and I listened to the album more things change around Jr high period. And didn't get in to Meshuggah until mid 2000s and is currently my favorite band. Awesome to see this interview.
this was really fun to listen to, can tell you guys have a good rapport
so nice to see marten and rob talk like real friends
I was at brixton for meshuggah ,mary beats jane and machine head .meshuggah were missing a member but still destroyed and mh played a new track called frontlines.
Listening to MH since BMA slayer gig in Solna hallen was my first show and then Circus Sthlm. Listening to Meshuggah since destroy erase improve saw them at Gino.
M write such great guitar and lyrics.
Love that all 3 T M J writes lyrics and music in meshuggah.
Love immutable its the first album I bought physically since destroy erase improve.
I still have the Selfcaged EP that I bought from the merch stand at Manchester Apollo on the 95 tour.
Marten rulz. Insightful conversation. Marten seems to be a very kind person
Fredrik is making a new Special Defects album? jeez, that's sickest news!
This guitar player is a force.
This is real shit! Thanks man! It really means a LOT!!!
Loved the mention of Entombed & all the great shoutouts to Slayer. Fun & funny af! This interview is all aces. Meshuggah opened for Slayer in 1998, saw them twice on the Diabolus/ Chaosphere album tour cycle. Still among the top 3 best shows i ever witnessed.
That's how I discovered Meshuggah! In 1995 I went to see Machine Head in Milan and there they were! Life-changing shit
Great conversation! \m/
At that Burn My Eyes Tour 1995 I saw Machine Head together with Meshuggah and Mary Beats Jane in Cologne. It was the first time for me to get in touch with Meshuggah and I was blown away. Since then they are my all time favorite! 🤘🏻
I saw Machinehead and Meshuggah both for the first time when they opened for SLAYER! Big fan of ALL OF THAT!
Fuck yeah been jamming immutable non stop.
Awesome. Can't wait to see them in May in Glasgow
Very cool episode...CHEERS ROB & MARTEN.....
I rinsed a tape of the headbangers ball tour special that was filmed during that Mary beats Jane/meshuggah run. Robb pretty much introduced the world to Korn.
Wow ! Every time I listen to these some unexpected bands pop up. I haven’t heard about Mary Beats Jane in a long time. I have that album and it still plays regularly in my daily shuffle of music. Just got the new Meshuggah and it’s great of course. Another excellent episode Robb !
I didn't know you had a podcast and this shit just made my day! I have some catching up to do! \m/
One of my favorite metal bands. Rational Gaze was my first Meshuggah song but Cyanide christ made me a huge fan and to this day is my favorite song of theirs. Great interview. Loved the new album but I hope they mix new and old next time. Would love to hear none mixed with obzen. Not to mention some of the sickest music videos in metal.
I love Meshuggah. Mårten seems like a cool dude. Great guitar player.
Meshuggah set the mark for guitarists’ picking skills and drummers’ foot work!
F yeah! Amazing interview, such a chill and great conversation and the dive to the past was really interesting. The new album is truly a masterpiece! Meshuggah black metal song when? :D
45:20 Fast as a Shark!!!
Killer Song, absolutely brilliant!!!
BTW: Mr. Udo Dirkschneider,the man
himself,had his 70th Birthday this
week!
Is there footage of Machine Head with Marten? Also I wish there were more clips of Meshuggah on that tour. I’ve only seen one clip with fredrik on bass.
I still can't believe a pandemic happened in my lifetime. I assumed it would happen in the far future and be something our great grand children might have to deal with maybe.
The entire world was in a lock down state of some kind. The USA probably had more freedoms during it, but this was a human experience that will go down in history books. I feel like This experience has mentally evolved the human race to a level where we are coping with the consequences of the internet. The internet is a wonderful tool, but I feel like most people have learned that it can be used as a weapon as well to lead people down the wrong road and make them ready to fight for anything even though they are twisting the truth and feeding lies.
We was all locked up like animals for a long time with a real risk of death
It damaged humanity but I also think we needed something like this to learn, understand , and become better as a species to keep mankind living far into the future!!!
We've all lost a lot, but I see a different attitude and way of thinking in general now that gives me hope for the future.
I'm sure we'll never be perfect. But I believe this has made us better and smarter humans.
I really like that Marten doesnt try to be "Metal" as a persona, he is what i call "european" Meshuggah is the hardest of the "core" bands and will ever be yet the guys show that you can be sorta a Metalbuddhist, talking normally being a silent person. I find that to be a rare treat in the business. Not to set down Robb that grew up in a country where you have to be a salesman and show your big pants.
Wonder if there's any footage of Marten filling in with Machine Head
I think I woke up my neighbours laughing when I heard he lost his virginity listening to At dawn they sleep haha
OG my dude . great guest , amazing fucking live band !
Thank you for this podcast. Marten is a beast ✊✊✊
Great conversation
Robb's son is playing the Cello?!
Something went terrible wrong here,Mr. Flynn!
Hahaha...just kidding ^^
Be proud!!!
You can see his son perform with Robb, the charity event that Tony LaRusso puts on.
Messhuga, the masters of times and spaces
In an interview Thomas said he played drums on cushions bs stuff around the house since he was really young like 5. Then his folks realised he's a drummer and got him a kit
Brilliant stuff .. Many thanks guys
Cool interview greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪, and Robb sounds a bit like Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal) 🤘 🤘
Ran into this channel by accident! I instantly subscribed. Waclaw Kieltyka from Decapitated would be badass!
Awesome interview!
Hey robb there’s a song called
Everyone i love is broken by oceans
Is that actually you singing on that song as a guest vocalist,
Because that song is absolutely killer mate, and your vocal additions are so brutal it’s fucking epic, and the way the whole song is structured musically is brilliant, the whole song feels like it takes you on this journey/ tells a story from start to finish it’s fucking killer man, I can’t get if off repeat on my Spotify
I’d love to hear about how all that came about one day, mate
Big fan from down under hopefully you and the mighty machine head come back down this way soon
Awesome interview
Killer interview
Rob your best heavy metal artist podcast UA-cam channel....good luck
Yes I am remember seeing the dynamo vid with Adam Duce wearing the NONE EP long sleeve, fuck yeah.
Also to the guitarist out there Per Nilson is Alan Holdsworth meets Meshuggah. Bro is a monster behind his instrument
but he doesn't fit meshuggah otherwordly leads or even solos...
@@isaackmojica8302 bro I loved Nilson's phrasing. Wouldn't compare the two tho. Different animals
@@venom07786 but still he doesn't even follow the same tonal(when he was in meshuggah) phrasing

I used to go to a store called Beyond the Limit, to get Metal Hammer! Couple of doors down from the best record store(still there) Rolling Stone records.
Rob just jamming out to Meshuggah. Love it.

Being a graphic arts designer the arched lettering is killing me! I couldn't even enjoy the interview with my OCD ass! Just kept focusing on that arch not looking at all right to me Lmmfao! I have issues.
Humiliative is up there with New Millenium Cyanide Christ for my favourite Meshuggah jam. Riffs for DAYS
from memory:
the MachineHead tour they speak of was originally booked & advertized as MachineHead, CLUTCH & Mary Beats Jane... imagine my utter surprise (as a local crew guy & fairly newly obsessed with the Destroy Erase Improve record) when MESHUGGAH walk into Huxley's (in Berlin) to set up.
MESHUGGAH obliterated & tbh, MachineHead sounded like a Sunday School picnic after Mårten & Co.'s sonic seismology.
apparently CLUTCH had to drop out a few weeks before the tour kicked off as far as i remember.
fortuitous for MESHUGGAH...?
ive said it before,,and i'll say it again,,Rob Fynn ,,you do the best metal interviews ,,best guests,,dont get me wrong,,the jasta show and Christina Rowatt (the void,,revolver) are also great,,,,but ROb,,,,this is candid,,insightful,,entertaining,,engaging ...thanks again from australia,,,fuck tv,,fuck covid,,fuck putin(poo tin)...and no fucking regrets :)
You should get Chino or Stef from Deftones
That would be very interesting. Especially Chino.
Ewww No!!! Chino is a lame Vocalist! And Stef has smoked himself Retarded into thinking the Earth is Flat!!!

Nah get Sergio instead
@@sammadden5540 I second this
Like the chasm meshuggah don't give a fuck about trends, just play what they want for their own gratification. So cool nowadays.
I wish Metal Hammer would've asked: "How did you write that fucking insane Pravus shit?" - a question appropriate for Marten...My soul shudders when I hear them fire that up. And as for the virginity question: "Drunken Wisdom" by Overkill! Hail fuckin' Meshuggah!
🔥🔥🔥
Not finding the 1 was, combined with the 8 strings and super heavy sound, what got me hooked back in 2002. The song was Stengah. And honestly it's ruined a lot of music for me, not that it bothers me one bit. Now I need music that challenges me either rhythmically or harmonically. Enough said.
But seriously, this whole interview, at least 1h15m in, is super interesting. And most of all it's fun to sort of get to know Mårten as a person. A lot of the history has until now been unknown to me.
I know its unlikely but I'd love to see the guys from Bölzer on here...
Noice! I love me some Meshuggah! I saw them way back in 2007 in Baltimore City, Maryland. They were heavy as f*ck! Looking so forward to the Electric Happy Hour later today and the new MH music video coming out on the 12th! I'll have it pre set on Spotify and already have my reminder on UA-cam. You are really on a big roll, Robb! You inspire me to start my own podcast and to try and start a band up (though there's virtually no Metal scene in Baltimore or even DC for that matter. Ugh). See ya in the comments on YT on Electric Happy Hour! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🎸🔥🔥🔥😎✌️🤙🎸

@@elduce7166 Oh yeah. I've seen Misery Index at the Maryland Death Fest in B More just in 2020. I guess I'm comparing the Baltimore City Metal scene to the likes of New York, New Orleans, The Bay Area, , etc which isn't really fair I suppose. There's definitely some great bands/musicians from the DMV (DC, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA) such as Lamb of God, NothingFace, Bad Brains, Clutch, Minor Threat, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, etc And I'll check that out. Well the ones paying attention
I'd love to see Mike IX Williams (vocalist of the New Orleans Sludge Metal band EyeHateGod) be a guest on here. Or maybe Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Krist Novoselic the ex bassist of Nirvana and current bassist of the band Giants in the Trees (they are really good and it'd give you a ton of views/attention and be a really interesting conversation and make for a great podcast). I could list some more and wanted to ask what happened with Chino Moreno from the Deftones but I guess at this point he's just flaked on it and won't ever come on.
Mike isn’t doing this podcast at all due to his affiliation and friendship with Phil Anselmo. He will always back Phil at all times.
@@elduce7166 I'm surprised I didn't think of that. I don't think it would've happened anyway even if the Robb/Phil beef never occurred but it's more of something I'd like to see rather than it becoming a reality. I still think Krist Novoselic would be a fantastic idea. Imagine the attention that would get. Just having his name (and the word Nirvana if you put ex Nirvana bassist in the title of the podcast) would help out in a big way I'd imagine. It also would be a really interesting and fun conversation and the band he's in is actually really good. Giants in the Trees are like a combination of "Grunge", Folk, Americana, etc kinda music.
