THAN YOU VERY MUCH!!! THIS IS THE LESSON THAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR ON UNDERSTANDING THE FRETBOARD!! Even though the lesson is simple, it contains huge chunk of informations written and presented in a clear manner. Than you Guitar world and John Petrucci!!!!!
I have just watched all of these lessons. As a huge JP fan, this is very exciting. I figured I would watch them to pick up a few things, and I left with mind blowing power chord configurations and a better way to look at the instrument altogether. As a lead player, this course helped immensely.
Just add a short delay with lots of repeats and it sounds more reverby than delayish. John has said he hates reverb but loves delays. other than that hi gain on the bridge pup with everything on the guitar dimed out.
Love your 2 picture from guitar practicing musicians, guitar word, guitar part, amazing . I have a great collection of this magagins, Thanks veru cool long time I know
This entire series has been great but this information in particular is huge!!! This is the exact information that finally unlocked the fretboard for me. I was finally able to improvise freely across the entire fretboard after learning this approach. If you're "stuck in the boxes" or are having a hard time learning the major scale in all positions across the fretboard then pay attention here. Shifting my focus from the larger intervallic patterns that cover all six strings, to these smaller two string and even single string patterns, totally exploded my playing. Instead of always looking at the guitar in terms of six strings, it can be helpful to look at it more as three sets of two strings. Everyone teaches the larger six string scale shapes. However it's not very often I see people teaching these smaller two string, 6 note shapes and that's a shame, because it can really give you a lot of freedom.
Can you elaborate? I am not following how to do a scale on one string or two strings using the shapes? I don’t know which shape to use or in what sequence to use the shapes?
@@dry509 play the C major scale, as it has no flats and sharps, on one string, and as you play all the notes you will get the shapes. They are 3 for one string scales: 1-2-4 with the stretch (C,D,E), 1-3-4 (D,E,F), 1,2,4 (E,F,G). The rest of the scale is a repetition of those shapes.
These shapes should be GLUED INTO any aspiring lead guitar player's heads. These are the secret to playing melodic, as well as fast and clean...with a solid alt picked right hand, which is the way to play 3nps/2 string patterns: D-U-D---U-D-U shift, repeat. Use your ears and you 'll start to hear the shapes too. You'll know which one to play just from that after a bit. Killer lesson.
John was and still is a huge inspiration for me, and this video actually made sense! (compared to other crappy guitar tutorials on UA-cam) Love ya John P. keep it up!
So many other instructional videos just miss the mark for me. Finally! leave it to a maestro like Patrucci to shed some real illuminating insight about how to navigate scales around your guitar neck! The Fifth and sixth videos were extremely helpful ! Love Patrucci and love Dream Theater....!
It's so generous of John to show us little guitar ants his ways. Amzing how at the base of something so compleks and sophisticated there is something so fundamentaly simple. Very helpful learning tip, thank you maestro
He should definitely teach more for a beginner this is extremely good lesson which gives you key ingredients how to remember scale!what he said is shape based approach there is also a theory based approach where suppose i wanna play c major scale then i identify all the shapes sitting in one octave, meaning you start on C and end on C(there are three of them) and shifting through octaves this three shapes covers all C major scale over the fretboard!🤘🏾
Thanks so much for JP series I loved the all lessons from Satch and Steve Vai that was so informative, also please continue this series of episodes with Ron Thal, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, Michael Romeo as well
Ya man I teach the same method of learning your scales one string at a time ..I find your mind remembers your scales by learning them one string at a time much better than the box patterns typically taught.plus I like to play them up and down one string in triplicates which gains speed strength and dexterity all at the same time. I find a scale can be learned and memorized on the whole neck quickly...Box patterns only teach the box and you have to think to much when changing positions....but the one string method teaches you to memorize the correct notes on the whole neck...good to see someone else is using this method because it works...Thanks John Rock On
Add to this a mini string skip as you transfer to the following string and some serious speed can be achieved. So it would be down, up, down/down (on to string above) up, down/down...and the inverse coming down.
Question for Petrucci mega-fans: John mentioned a "doobie brothers chord"; can anyone remember what the chord is or which lesson he mentioned it in? Thanks!
I don’t get which shape to play where? What is the rule to determine which shape to use on one string, two strings, etc..not sure I’m explaining correctly?
dry509 The best way to figure that out is to start by learning where all 12 notes on each guitar string are. There are tons and tons of videos that show that. I think it’s easiest to find a picture that shows that. Or just pick a scale and learn all those notes on each string also look a picture is easiest and when you look at the picture you will see the groups of 3 he was talking about. Hope it helps and happy playin
I love John's playing, his teaching and his personnality... He inspired me to practice and not give up ! With that beard he reminds me of Jim Morrison close to his death, except that John looks a lot healthier !
Yngwie has done like 4 hour-long videos for Young Guitar Japan, and 1 for REH - It's not like he's averse to showing us his style and approach on video. I'm sure Guitar World can make on offer he can't refuse ;)
Blkjakk John Petrucci looks like wrestler Luke Harper & Zakk Wyle is like Triple H, LOL. They're a top guitarists. You know I really like how Zakk plays Ozzy's song " Fire in the sky" is the best 👍👍👍🤘
How funny I actually practice scales like this already. I even add different time signatures to it, or make it be triplets, or quarter notes, eight notes, sixteenth notes.
This is the lesson that I have been looking for for 20 years
John is a great player but he is also a fantastic teacher all his tips have been great thanx much !!
I think he's rather a fantastic player and a great teacher.
4:18 When you explain something so clearly you get the camera guy to talk on accident :)
LoL
All lessons should have someone saying "uh huh" from now on.
Why is everyone trying to look like Mountain Man Zakk Wylde.

The 2 string idea is great. Steve Morse showed the same lesson on the "Power Lines" DVD and it REALLY helps unlock the fretboard.
Pure genius to be able to simplify scale shapes like that ! Thanks John this is going to help big time !
One of the BEST guitar sounds I've ever heard.
Just add a short delay with lots of repeats and it sounds more reverby than delayish. John has said he hates reverb but loves delays. other than that hi gain on the bridge pup with everything on the guitar dimed out.
Also Mesa Boogie..
Then add you a hint of chorus...voila
Thanks for posting, excellent lesson.
You Sir are Keeping Rock Music on Course. Much appreciated for the Extended Knowledge. Thank You and Rock on! 👍
6:55 the fact that even John F'in Petrucci fucks up sometimes makes you feel better when learning this stuff lol
Love your 2 picture from guitar practicing musicians, guitar word, guitar part, amazing . I have a great collection of this magagins, Thanks veru cool long time I know

aha it repeats aha its always the same aha its almost simple omg as a beginner my head explodes and i am desperatly lost
Can you elaborate? I am not following how to do a scale on one string or two strings using the shapes? I don’t know which shape to use or in what sequence to use the shapes?
HeavyInstinct Can you explain the sequence of the shapes? I am not getting it.

It is great to see him have to think at times like we mortals do.
So many other instructional videos just miss the mark for me.

were extremely helpful ! Love Patrucci and love Dream Theater....!
so what are you looking for a personal apology?
I've enjoyed all 3 series of the methods, but Petrucci's been the best by far imo.
Yea, the other two are just ramblings
Now I love all three players that they got for this series but I've easily got the most out of John's part. Love it.
It's so generous of John to show us little guitar ants his ways. Amzing how at the base of something so compleks and sophisticated there is something so fundamentaly simple. Very helpful learning tip, thank you maestro

John knows how to talk to mortals.
Chico Christe Pace No Doubt!
He can play chords like zeta minor and pwn sus2
Thanks so much for JP series I loved the all lessons from Satch and Steve Vai that was so informative, also please continue this series of episodes with Ron Thal, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, Michael Romeo as well
AMAZING LESSON Thank You!!!
Great lesson by great John petrucci and ofcourse guitar world...
You can use the same idea with pentatonics as well. There are 4 note, 2 string patterns that connect all over the fretboard.
6:44 when he gets a mistake (on purpose) to see if we mortals were paying attention.
Balduin Eldhöpp wahahah
Episode 7: Songs on 1 String, Albums on 2 and How to Play in 6 Dimensions.

Thanks for the heads up, John, thanks.
John, you're the man! Very cool tip. Tks!
He's no man, he's God
4:46 THE FOLLOW DAMN SCALE CJ
Terrific, I learned a lot from you in some Guitar World issues from early 2000
Add to this a mini string skip as you transfer to the following string and some serious speed can be achieved. So it would be down, up, down/down (on to string above) up, down/down...and the inverse coming down.
Thank you John sir amazing guitar lessons ❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘
He plays with so much style
Mr. John,I love your playing
this concept helped me so much
These are amazing. Petrucci rules.
Glad to learn....
Question for Petrucci mega-fans: John mentioned a "doobie brothers chord"; can anyone remember what the chord is or which lesson he mentioned it in? Thanks!
we're at episode 6 and my "YOU KNOW" counter is exploded already
This is GOLD!!!
Dear John,
Can you show the exact plectrum posture you use again? Or is there already a video? Thank you very much. Greetings Fredi
Probably a Jazz 3 pick
That's what he does at "Pull me under" :O
Metropolis pt.1 aswell
His finger independency exercises literally changed my playing immeasurably in like 2 days hahaha.
Is there a video I can find?
John think about dominant, subdominant and tonic when soloing?
wonderful insights
Dudes, this is awesome.
Hey you can do a " the Michael Romeo Method" will be awesome!!
He has sausages for fingers but he is so clean and fast. He's so magical.
Awesome tips, thanks!
What is the song at the intro?
i want to download all episode. is this the last one? thank you
4:24 Who else got scared when he said " This is going to come in real handy in a couple of seconds" That look said it all!
I think John is slowly turning into Santa.
In what sequence do I use each shape on one string and then two strings to create a scale? I don’t get it? Thanks.
Where is episode 7? :(
I don’t get which shape to play where? What is the rule to determine which shape to use on one string, two strings, etc..not sure I’m explaining correctly?

Thanks guys
I love how Petrucci doesn't show off his true virtuoso mindboggling playing in this series.
This is very useful
Why would you tape up a Marshall jubilee amp
Ehrich Tifft marketing reasons, they wont promote something for no reward
John has a Mesa endorsement, so they can’t be showing a Marshall in the back.
John is a Mesa Boogie endorsed artist. Can't have any inferior amps in the way of their greatness.
ODIN GUIDE OUR SHIPS........
Amon Amarth lol
I love John's playing, his teaching and his personnality... He inspired me to practice and not give up ! With that beard he reminds me of Jim Morrison close to his death, except that John looks a lot healthier !
Thats from "the advancing guitarist" right?
Is he playing a different shape each time?
That's the approach of Mick Goodrick's book!
Petrucci - my man!
What size bra do you think he wears?
I'd love to see malmsteen do one of these but I know it's not going to happen...
Yeah he just talks nonsense and shows something way to fast for us to see
What? Malmsteen doesn't talk nonsense... he knows his stuff and he's very interesting to listen to imo
Malmsteen just criticizes everyone
Yngwie has done like 4 hour-long videos for Young Guitar Japan, and 1 for REH - It's not like he's averse to showing us his style and approach on video. I'm sure Guitar World can make on offer he can't refuse ;)
Yeah that would be nice ;)
That beard is metal as fuck Bro ✊
thank god am dyslexic lisen to what the man said Thank you .
Lets play in 188/223
what is the intro song
Pull Me Under (1st track of Images and words)
Great,!!!
Combining this video and #5 you can play the fast part of metropolis pt.1
...and in his youngest days, Santa Claus used to be a Guitar hero...
The stray hair hanging from John's massive forearm is super distracting.
That's a vein. :-D
I hadn't noticed until I read this. Now It's distracting. :p
Watts dat??? Pay attention
Estos son las momentos en los que odio no saber inglés :'v
He makes music theory sound so simple. I wish it were for me... he is awesome though
this is basically a short version of Rusty Cooleys fretboard autopsy
Add some Theater band and Petrucci could literally just play variations on the major scale on the next album and we'd all be fine with that.
Why Zakk Wyle & John Petrucci like Long Rock Beard ✂✂✂
Tc Bong Kung because long beard is cool
Blkjakk John Petrucci looks like wrestler Luke Harper & Zakk Wyle is like Triple H, LOL. They're a top guitarists. You know I really like how Zakk plays Ozzy's song " Fire in the sky" is the best 👍👍👍🤘
Tc Bong Kung 😎👍🏻
because metal! \m/
i think they have the same stylist btw i love zakk and hail capt. blackbeard
Whats the name of the intro song
john petruccskovich
I love scales,I sit and piss with shit like this all the time.
How funny I actually practice scales like this already. I even add different time signatures to it, or make it be triplets, or quarter notes, eight notes, sixteenth notes.
"And now, to take it to level 97,890,555..."
11:30 that's bit sloppy from him
Man plays scale vertically... 😴
Man plays scale horizontally... 🥳
I play 3 notes per string a lot... everytime... *ALWAYS*
have they already invited Frank Gambale?
Petrucci studied that last shape for years before it clicked. I'm good at the guitar.
Dude, you have a long stray hair hanging from your left foreman! 😂😂
Just wait till he gets gray hair and beard.
Then I call him Gandalf the grey and great guitarist.
yeahhhhhhhhh!( ̄▽ ̄)b
Petruccinator
Where is the mind blown emoji...
Awesome as always but hate the look John. Homeless pirate
)
Holy shit! you could really charge like 100 bucks for this lesson and it still would be cheap.
