Well after soul calibur 3 it has had consistently less characters each time, and sequels having less content than previous games never shines well, also it doesn't matter how deep a combat system is less options gets old after a while, unless your a hardcore fighting fan.
Back then when the original Soul Calibur was released on the DC launch day on 1999, it scored a perfect 10 on IGN review. A masterpiece that withstand the test of time.

The game is great and an amazing return to form for Soul Calibur. I think the score is quite fair if only for the relatively small roster considering how long this franchise has been going on. I can see this being near a 10/10 if it had...well, ten more characters from the start.
I don't think I have any credibility to say this considering that I was born in the 2000s, but gamers are getting more picky with every new big release.
@referral madness I was born in 2001. Of course I remember times before PS3 and Xbox360 especially considering that my first console was a PS2 and a GBA SP.
Question: When did a small roster become a negative? I will take a smaller, more technically diverse set of characters over a humongous roster any day. Quality over quantity.
oldschooldogy316 - What a bunch of malarkey. No, smaller rosters have not "always been a negative." Street Fighter II Turbo and Mortal Kombat II both had a 12-character roster. They're still considered to be two of the greatest fighting games of all time. For that matter, Soul Calibur II had about 20 characters, and again... still one of the greatest of all time.
A shame we don't have all the characters from at least 3 return (and Hilde, not including guests) return in this game. I'd love to see them with the new mechanics brought to the series. Perhaps through DLC? The roster despite it's size is pretty solid in my opinion, and it brought back a lot of the cut characters people missed in V. I, being a fan of Cassandra am sad to not see her in the game outside of story-mode, but at least Sophitia is in it this time around. Again though, it would be cool to see how they could differ Cassandra more with the use of Soul Charge or some of the other little mechanics they've given to certain characters.
I still have memories of scarcely playing Soulcalibur in the Arcade (I'll be damned if I can remember which one it was though). What really happens is that people like you make a fit about some minor score difference. This is even more of a minor difference than an 8 to a 9, and yet you still make a hissy fit about it.
It's just that decimal based scores are kinda dumb. Like what's really the difference between an 8.9 and a 9? An insignificant 0.1. If a perfect score is a 10 and the only thing the reviewer didn't really like was the lack of voice acting for the Libra of the Soul mode, they should've just given it a 9.
60 second load times? For a fighting game? It's an arena and 2 characters. I don't really know an apt comparison off hand, but I don't recall any fighting game i've played ever faff around for a full minute to load one stage.
Why is Soul Calibur better than other fighting games? You can create custom fighters. Can’t do that in Mortal Kombat, Injustice, Street Fighter, Tekken, or Smash Bros. Additionally, I find their modes much more enjoyable, and the combat refreshing when compared to other fighting games.
"small roster of 20" smh that's about the right amount, especially a bit earlier he said all characters feel different. not to mention the create a character mode has plenty of items to choose from to make multiple characters of your liking
CyberShinobi your not wrong that’s average for how many characters people use. Then you have the people who love and breath this game and will wreck you with all 20
It’s not just who you play, but how quickly the game will become repetitive. Mortal kombat Armageddon had an insane number of characters (was before my mom let me play rated M games haha), they weren’t all super well designed, but I’m sure it never got boring. Two characters in this are samurai katana guys, that one that starts with a V and is all twirly moves are hilarious and awesome though.
The beta was so much fun and I can't wait for Friday. This is definitely the best Soul Calibur since 2 and 3 (2 for gameplay and speed, 3 for content).

Nah Voldo is.
Soul Calibur VI does a great job of really making you Feel like Spider-Man
20 characters is too small of a roster? Most people play 2-3 tops.
Corvo Attano as a playable character lets get it done Arkane/Namco
Was expecting SCVI to get a 5 or 7, but 8.9 is nice!!!
Everyone: talking about the video
Me: SUNRAITO LERO OBADARAIBUUUUUU!!!!!!!!
The fire still burns!
Soul calibur 2 is a really colorful game. Its my favorite one. All the sequels after 2 are not that colorful and im wondering why
Still giving .9's? Hmm...
Guess they'll never learn!
I don’t care about the number they gave it. That’s was 5 minutes of almost all positives. I can’t wait for it
Anyone who bought soulcalibur 6 for PC?
YES, bought the Deluxe Edition!
Yes sir! Maybe if we get lucky some mods may or may not pop up.
I am also pretty sure that more hidden content, next to the upcoming DLC, will be added in the future, just like TEKKEN 7.
Nope
Yep and I'm betting our loading times are 5 seconds or lower.
The beta was so much fun and I can't wait for Friday. This is definitely the best Soul Calibur since 2 and 3 (2 for gameplay and speed, 3 for content).
5yrs ago damn
I'm still mad bandai-namco put Noctis in Tekken instead.
I mad because..they dont put kiryu..wasted
Althane Frostbane We have him already. Miguel.
Customize him
Khai-The Casual Player The dream is never dead. #KiryuForTekken
SC6 is here in less than 12 hours!
the first thing I gotta do after work is going to my local shop asap
I will skip the basketball training and MTG draft tomorrow lol
"One of the easiest fighting games to jump into" 😂😂 I open up the move set menu and I'm just dumbfounded
Feeling like Soul Calibur while playing Soul Calibur makes Soul Calibur a worth while game, although they took the puddle out of the castle gates stage, it’s still a refreshing feeling to mantle Soul Calibur and feel like Soul Calibur 8.9
I just wanna buy it for Ivy haha
I wanna get it for Voldo and Geralt
Brandon Serralde i seriously just bought this game because of ivy lol. I always played soul caliber on 360 and she was my favorite lol.
Waited many years for this. I used to adore soul edge many many years ago on the PS. Christ, I feel old
Thanks for the review I just pre-ordered it hooray
I have not played Soul Calibur since Xbox. Now I’m so stoked to download it tomorrow on my PS4!I’m so excited!🤩
Wow, so there really aren't any more characters? I guess Cassandra will be DLC then?
Yep and its sad
Ikr
She will! Her new design confirms it
over 20 distinct characters are not enough to master?
I miss when these games used to do platform exclusive characters. I feel like Norse Kratos would fit in perfectly
Idc wat they say.. Dis game a 10
I honestly haven’t played a SoulCalibur I didn’t enjoy. For me SoulCalibur games are synonymous with quality.
Jesus, 20 characters is too small of a roster? I think you'd get like 8 at the most back in the day...kids these days...
Wow, great score! I’m a big fan, still have the Dreamcast original!
$14 for the deluxe edition on psn now!!!!
13.49$ now
Finally brought the RPG mode back!!!!!! I've been waiting since the old ps2 game for this to return.
