Hey Doug - this is Bryan Beller, hijacking the band account to say thank you to you and Discord Administrator KMach1ne on behalf of the band for taking us for a spin, and mentioning our new album. Very kind - much appreciated! Cheers - BB
Bryan - Just want to say that rarely can you see three musicians who are just so in tune with each other. I am sure that you all work just as hard as anybody else, but the relaxation just seems to ooze from the band even in the most complex of pieces.
I shot and edited that video so I have to say thank you very much Doug for you mentioning over and over again how much you enjoyed my work. That meant the world to me. Working with people of the talent level that Bryan, Marco & Guthrie possess is ultra inspirational and so the editor in me had an absolute blast making that video as well as the others I did from that DVD. Seriously sir, you made my day. Thank you 🤩
@@hulldanfan same way I did with Steve Vai. Just some mounts and some special double sided tape goop that GoPro don't make anymore, but I still have some that I use very sparingly these days.
@@Doug.Helvering thanks again Doug. And by the way, thank you for the Trevor Rabin interview for his new album Rio. I know many Yes fans dislike me for this, but Trevor is my no.1 Yes member of all time. His contributions really connected with me and Rio is a fantastic album.
Last year I saw Vai, Satch, Petrucci (both solo and DT), Riverside, Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief, Progject, Umphreys McGee, and The Aristocrats. And whoever else I forgot. The Aristocrats were hands-down the best gig I went to. I was right in front of Govrie so had a bird's eye view! I think that he's the most complete guitarist playing today. He has everything from composition to improvisation, technique to tone, dynamics and rhythm. I could watch him play all day. The only negative of that night was that they'd run out of tshirts in everything larger than medium the night before. 😢
Peak modern Jazz Fusion. These guys never disappoint. Guthrie could improvise the unprovisable. (Yes, I know that is not a word) Also recommend Nova Collective.
What the hell are you talking about? There is absolutely no jazz in that. Yes, it is fusion but the fusion is between rock and blues. There wasn't a single jazz chord change in that. They played on static harmony. You can't have jazz without harmony. Make a comparison with what you heard there and this ua-cam.com/video/6NUpOiqEXJU/v-deo.html
The Aristocrats never disappoint. And yes, Guthrie is about as accomplished a player as a human could possibly be 😅 I've gotten to see these guys twice and it is not an experience you want to miss out on if you ever have the chance to catch 'em. I was also extremely fortunate to go to all of Guthrie's classes during John Petrucci's Guitar Universe 2 back in 2018, which was fantastic; I could honestly listen to him speak about pretty much anything, as he's very well spoken. My favorite memory from that trip was staying up with him and a few other attendees drinking beer and talking music until 4 AM on the final night before the week was over. I mean, how many people can say that they've gotten to do something like that with one of their idols?! I'll cherish that memory until the day I die.
@@Christ_Is_The_King777 Yeah, he's a very likeable person even in-between songs. All three of them are, honestly; Marco always strikes me as the goofy guy that likes to crack jokes, Bryan kinda makes sure to focus on maintaining a coherent set while also tossing in a quip here or there, and of course Guthrie can craft a fascinating story about basically anything. I'll actually be seeing them again in just a few short months, because apparently I'm very lucky like that 🙂
Guthrie is from my home town. He played my strat in the local guitar store while I was getting it checked over. It was a sad day when I had to change the strings. Buy his books - Creative Guitar, Cutting Edge Techniques if you can. His wit and generosity comes through and you’ll learn everything you need to know about guitar. Loved your reaction, Doug.
I still can't believe that Rolling Stone magazine didn't include Guthrie in its top 250 guitarists of all time. Guthrie is a God-tier level guitar player.
Combined level of skill in that band right now is absolutely off the charts. There are very very few acts that could match or even exceed that level of musicianship, performance prowess, and creativity right now. It's not even a soupergroup. And a hypergroup. Three musicians at absolutely top of their field, in their prime, no limits.
They also collaborated with the Polish Primuz Orchestra with an album recording some of their tracks from earlier recordings which is phenomenal ,I am sure you would really enjoy being a classical composer Rkon ,Really glad you reviewed the Aristocrats they are indeed a fantastic 3 piece
I'm so glad you finally got to check out The Aristocrats! You should check them out (and their new single) when they come on tour this year. Their shows are jaw- droppingly good!
Hey Doug! Please check out "Within the Realm of Possibility" from the concept album "Opus" by Nospün for another amazing epic. They are the lovechild of Dream Theater and Haken and came absolutely out of nowhere with one of the best debut albums I've ever heard!
Word is getting out about this band and rightfully so. The entire album is very "Scenes From a Memory" Normally I hear this and I roll my eyes because that is a massive comparison, but I think it holds very true.
Yes,musical wizzards of our time,i really dig their musical craft and outstanding musical imagination. As a bass player myself i apreciate ofcourse Brian Beller's playing,my take on him is,that he truly is a 5 string player, what i mean is,i have seen a lot of players with 5 string basses but, using it as a 4 string. All 3 are masters of their craft but maby evenly important to me,they always surprise or bewilder me with their compositions.Always a joy ,for me,to watch them.Mastery in motion.🤘
This is the song that made me fall in love with Fusion. And the improvised break from this particular live version still blows me away to this day. Unreal!
Guthrie Govan is, without question, the greatest guitarist to ever live! His phrasing is beyond match and allows him to improvise from one to the next flawlessly. I'm a drummer and first listened to the Aristocrats for Marco, then, Guthrie! I'm a drummer who watches more and more of Guthrie every day! I'm 73 now and not in great health. I hope to meet him before I leave! Thanks for another great reaction to a fun, fun band!
Missed this when it dropped, one of my favorite bands! All three are not only top tier at their instruments but their creativity is what I think sets them apart. Minnemann is so tasteful and his cymbal work is unmatched imo
Saw gg n da boys one nite, walked out with same wonderment I had years ago watching mahavishnu orchestra, thinking, well I kinda play guitar....❤ brilliant on many levels...thanks for showing off one of the finest examples of what the human mind can accomplish...😮
I had the pleasure to see them in 2016 as part of Joe Statriani's G3 in Germany, relocated from the outside to a rather small venue due to heavy rain. Seeing the Aristocrats, Joe, Steve Vai and Mike Keneally 5 m away from me with funny audience interaction playing incredible music is unforgettable. Best concert ever.
I've seen them live twice now and if you are remotely into true musicianship, you owe it to yourself to catch them live. Very talented, fun to watch, and all super nice guys. I like that their shows are typically fairly small and intimate so you can get pretty close to the action and truly appreciate what they can do. No weak links in this chain.
Awesome Doug, what a treat! Their last album is one of the greatest things I've ever heard, and this video was a total joy to watch. Astonishing musicianship from all three,i don't think you could find a finer guitarist than Guthrie. He's super humble and not one for social media or self promotion, that's why he's not more widely known. But once seen never forgotten. After watching your tasteful piano impro maybe they should have you guest on keyboards!?
Marco just missed out on the DreamTheater gig and then started this trio He is an unbelievable drummer you should check out his drum solo everyone on 2007 summer slaughter tour with Necrophagist.
Marco turned it down. He was the first choice. But he couldn't commit to the band exclusively, so they said Mike was. Which is laughable to think Mike was better for the job. Robotic yes man .
Hey Doug please check out Mahandini from Dewa Budjana. For your information Dewa Budjana is one of legendady guitarist from Indonesia. In that song Dewa Budjana is working with great musician there such as Jordan Ruddess (Dream Theater) and Marco Minneman (The Aristocrats). I always enjoying how you reacts a music video. Thanks
Doesn't get better than Guthrie Govan on guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minneman on mrums. Pretty much the funnest and most talented trio out there today. I can't recommend the entirety of their two live DVDs enough. The albums are good but watching them live is where it's at.
7:34 I don't think it would be unreasonable to argue than no: there really isn't any better guitarist today than Guthrie Govan and he's usually on the short list of anybody who knows him or of him.
