The bass player does sing on some songs, a few of them: Namahage, The Colour Out of Space and At the Mountains of Madness. All of them are great songs, and the latter two were inspired by HP Lovecraft stories. FYI, many of their videos have English subtitles if you care about that.

Scat is mostly used in Jazz as wordless singing. So yes that bit you mentioned was Scat

There are a couple of great articles about these guys who played in relative obscurity for decades...gets a big break to tour the US finally then covid breaks out and cancels the tour. The irony is almost a mirror of this song lyrically.
