    Fun fact: Cybil was intended to be a playable character in this game with her own half of the story that intertwined with Harry's (like Leon and Claire's dynamic in RE2), but the developers had to cut that idea due to time constraints.

      @Boofcan  Рік тому +316

      @@Boofcan - Yes, and that tech demo is exactly why I believe the "Cybil was supposed to be playable" reports are true. I also think that the two items you can find in the school that Harry has no use for (the glucose and distilled water) were meant for Cybil, and Harry calling attention to it was leftover text from the cancelled Cybil content.

      It hits so much harder imo because it's also sad on top of being scary. Instead of just another freaky monster, you watch a person falling apart and losing control of their body, all while desperate for help. Lisa's face is painfully expressive, showing her desperate determination as she tries to move towards you, only becoming increasingly frail and injured instead. The music leans into this by being a purely emotional track; it's not scary at all. The real horror is that we have to watch this woman "die".

    1 and 4 are my favorites. I think it's because the protagonists are just there. They don't really have a reason to be connected to the cult or have extreme guilt. They were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Harry was on vacation with his daughter, and Henry moved into a probably cheap apartment lol. Seeing Silent Hill through their perspective is so interesting to me, because Silent Hill isn't shifting for them, rather someone else. They're just existing

      And so, I got to experience the definition of the word "survival horror."
      You see, as I made my way toward Harry's Jeep, I ran out of bullets and the air screamer was on my tail would not let up. (it was on hard mode.)
      Mind you, this was before I could acquire the pipe.
      I armed myself with the knife and managed to get in a few slashes with that air screamer before allowing it to chase me underneath the awning. (I think where you can find "Redrum" scrawled on the wall of the building.)

      While I understand the take to me nothing will ever reach the Pinnacle that is the silent hill historical society gameplay passage. From start to finish it is a rollercoaster of insane gags sound design moods motifs character arc progressions and knots being tied it's single handedly one of the best video games achievements of all time but yeah silent hill 1 led to such an amazing series so you got to respect it to the core a lot of the ideas in 1 led to the symbiosis of sh2 historical society happening
      From initially exploring the run down museum and reading about the 1800 military hospital and seeing pyramid head foreshadowed in the painting to encroaching upon an unrealistically long staircase representing James delve into his subconscious to exploring the prison and it's claustrophobic halls to the ritual demon and the artist who leaves behind eerie paintings in his cells to finishing the hangman puzzle to going through the body dump to jumping down 3 holes each with representation of James psyche to finally being trapped in the well and having to break through James amnesia and finally clearing the labyrinth while pyramid head stalks you to understanding Angela's tragic pass and the disturbing imagery of her visions all the way to James subconscious telling him he murdered his wife with the Slipknot puzzle then finding the graveyard where we learn that not only is each character buried in the prison for the misdeeds but we also get the revelation to sh4 with Walter already having died but being a major aspect to the lore to then ultimately confronting the fact that maria IS Mary in the cell. From start to finish we go through each emotion and by the time we finish that section defeating Eddie we get to reflect upon it all with a melancholic boat ride. Ive noticed that the first games in a series tend to be the most complete, well-rounded experiences. Half-Life, Morrowind (being the first mainstream Elder Scrolls), Kingdom Hearts, Silent Hill, Halo, etc.
      Sequels tend to be more streamlined, refined experiences that take what was goid from the original and try to do away with the stuff that didnt always work, sometimes experimenting with new features. However, the sequels are by necessity unoriginal and try to appeal to a previous audience, and lose some of that spontaneity and unrestrained creativity of an original work.

      The second one comes close due to its very strong themes of loneliness and solitude, especially the Director's Cut Sub-Scenario "Born From A Wish"

    Blessed algorithm, found this video and it just made me take one heck of a blast to the past, back in 1999 when I played the game. It still has such a powerful impact. SH2 was amazing as well, but the first one was a complete breakthrough and it was my introduction to the series. I loved how the bad ending provides a Tango (Esperándote which translates to 'Waiting for You' and was sung by an Argentinean singer), an extremely odd but fitting song due to the sort of urban melancholy the genre embodies. Those touches of brilliance are what elevate the game even further and I agree it doesn't get enough credit for. Then the trivia, like finding out the radio noise in the final boss was a dentist drill completely altered, or how in the Lake Side area the background noises get progressively weird as you approach the otherworld shift (in the complete soundtrack ripped by fans you can hear this progression and it's absolutely outstanding they got this going back then!) or the grey children noise being real children laughter slowed and pitched down a tone; there is so so much the game tells with its sound!

    You enter an elevator and you try interacting with the buttons. It doesn't function, your character who is a teen comments on it a few times before freaking out and banging on the door. A muffled voice says, "were gonna help! Hold on!" You go down to the basement and you decide to go back up. No one leaves and the character says "did I imagine that or did they leave...?"

    Actually the ritual consisted of burning Alessa from the beginning, since the God represents the Sun and this type of ritual was only for the highest ranking priests. Alessa managed to separate her soul before completing the ritual, which caused Dalia to keep her alive until that other half returned to Silent Hill.

    • @Boofcan

      Interesting. What I’ve always been fuzzy on, is was the boiler explosion on purpose or a cover up?

    • @yaninsanchez6136
      @yaninsanchez6136 Рік тому +16

      @@Boofcan I also believe that the Boiler explotion was the result of Alessa's stress in that situation, but in a archive of SH3 there is a mention of this ritual in particular and make sense and because the ritual was a failure they try to cover up with the boiler explotion.

    • @kleverkitsune4363
      @kleverkitsune4363 Рік тому +8

      @@Boofcan I don't think it was a cover-up to be honest. The cult runs the town from behind the scenes, they wouldn't need to really do much but have a fire inspector call it an unsolved arson to make it go away.
      The theory on this that I've heard (and that I consider a reasonable conclusion) was that the pain of the ritual made Alessa's powers come out in greater force which set the boiler off, which could have easily caused the ritual's fires to add to the issue.
      The ritual fire being intentionally that big would be one thing, but I suspect if they knew it was going to be an inferno they wouldn't have done it in a basement of one of their leader's houses.
      Another possibility is the fire started because the cult is incompetent. It got to the boiler, the boiler overheated and exploded, but I think that explanation undermines the threat of the cult a bit if they ruined their most important ritual because someone knocked over a brazier like an occult version of the three stooges.

    • @TheAlmightyGoiter
      @TheAlmightyGoiter Рік тому +2

      Then why don't any of the antagonists try to burn anything after that for any other ritual?

    • @yaninsanchez6136
      @yaninsanchez6136 Рік тому +4

      @@TheAlmightyGoiter
      The simple answer is "because the developers didn't think of it" Well, a clear example is the antagonist of Sh4. He was like a plan B for Dhalia, there may be more, but the history of the game did not follow that course. Besides Alessa was especial, she had mental powers and after the events of Sh1 the cult was focus of bring back the baby who in this point was consider a Saint.

    I remember being a child playing this game with my uncle and my dad. I was the one to solve the puzzles but we still had to ask for help to a friend and even then we got a bad ending (at the time we thought that was the canon ending). Although I could've used the controller and play the game, i was too damn scared to. It got to the point that i couldn't sleep and had to hug a radio (thought it was going to make sounds if something came).
    Years later I became old and played again. This is truly a work of art. Thank you SH.

    There’s something so uniquely lonely and dreadful about silent hill 1. One man trying to fight something larger than he can comprehend just for the sake of his daughter. It’s a much simpler story than having to face your own inner demons in silent hill 2 or defeating the nightmare your family was cursed with in silent hill 3. Maybe it’s that, or the primitive graphics and camera, but it could be anything really. It just has a special kind of feeling to it. Something about it is cozy, too, somehow.

    What a great video to stumble upon on my night off work! I could never properly get into the Silent Hill games, despite loving Horror games and being a 90's kid with 1,000's of hours pumped into the Resident Evil series to date, as well as countless others in the Horror genre, but love to watch people do playthroughs of the games and their Deconstructions of the game series' many plots.
