The candidate is a satire/social commentary of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, with the characters representing certain figures and attitudes during the election process, and the increasing temperature (which is ignored throughout the whole episode by everyone but Darwin) representing global warming

i think it was pretty obvious on which side the writers on the show were rooting for, considering that Anais and Darwin were meant to represent the Democrats and Gumball and Tobias represent the Republicans, and you can guess which side was more reasonable in the episode
