- Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a massive game (series producer Nagoshi promised the biggest game in the series yet, and he delivered). It is also a fresh start for Yakuza in a lot of ways (there’s a reason they dropped the numbering from this one’s western release). A new protagonist, new location, new genre, and a new story independent of the long Kiryu saga, all come together to make it feel like a breath of fresh air.
It lacks polish, and can be absurdly easy, but otherwise, it’s astonishing how much it gets not just right, but perfect, on its first attempt with things, while also maintaining the traditional Yakuza charm and quirkiness that endeared the series to fans in the first place. Long time fans of the series are likely to enjoy Yakuza: Like A Dragon as much for how it rethinks series conventions in the context of a turn based RPG, as they are because of how much it is still like older Yakuza games in all the best ways.
Meanwhile, the change in format (bringing it closer to the mainstream success Persona enjoys) and addition of English voice acting, means that this is the most accessible Yakuza release we have seen in years, if not ever. The flaws that exist don’t take much away from how compelling it is overall - and for the first time in years, I am actually interested to see what they do with the next Yakuza game. Bring it on, Sega.

I agree, this is what I'm most concerned with when I buy a Yakuza game. If you're not asking yourself "Is Yakuza: Like a Dragon a sequel to Persona 5 or not..." you're doing it wrong and the reviewer really dropped the ball.

I have played and owned just about every Yakuza title that has ever released. Further, I have been apart of the Yakuza community for years...I'll give it a shot.

Just beat this, and I love, love, LOVE this game! This was my first Yakuza game and I was intrigued of turn-based RPG format on a more modern and realistic setting.
Please send help. My buddy tried taking a shot every time persona was mentioned. He dead now :(

I'm 50 hours into my very first playthrough of Persona 5. I never played a Persona game before and I totally love it. Mixing Persona with Yakuza sounds like a dream come true. I'll definitely pick this up on PS5 in a few months.
I love this series. I am excited to try this new direction. It may even be better than the typical brawler-style of the series for me. It's a bummer it isn't on PS5 for a few months, but I probably won't be able to get a PS5 until then, anyway.
Wait a minute...isn't this coming out on the PS4? If so it will play on your PS5 when you get it and you will likely be able to upgrade it!
@@Sinn0100 Yes, that is true. For an unknown reason, the saves don't carry over, though. Also, I typically wait a few months before playing a new game just so it can get some patches and perhaps a price drop. I have no problem waiting for the PS5 version.
5 hours into the game and your analogy of Kiryu to Joker and Ichiban to Ryuji is SPOT ON, even the wind-up arm swing for his special attack. Great review, from a PS5 fan who’s on her 4th yakuza franchise game 👏🏼

Nearly no one in these comments understand that yakuza is just awesome story and FUN. What's wrong with a game being fun and the combat is literally how ichiban sees his fights i swear people take one look and go "wow I've seen about 20 minutes of the game so i won't get it."

After the disappointment of CP2077 (after finishing the game twice with 110+ hours on PC) I picked up Yakuza Like a Dragon on Steam thanks to your review. I didn't expect it to be that fun, but MY GOD. This game has made up for everything that CP2077 let me down.
I'm basically laughing every 10 minutes after 20 hours in.
I'm gonna wait on this one to be on sale if I remember this game by then. I'm not so sure about the rpg aspect I don't want this to be like the dead souls game.

Well persona games are some of the best jrpgs of all time and persona 5 is my favorite game of all time so I wouldn’t blame anyone if they brought up persona when talking about this game because when your talking about most jrpgs someone brings up persona or Pokémon
Hopefully these scrubs will play a real SMT game, once Nocturne remastered gets released.

Looks like the reviewer only played 1 jrpg. The combat is actually more closer to Final Fantasy XII than to Persona. Only the Combat menu that looks like persona. Also some enemy looks like a human version of Dragon Quest monster... plus enemy with Glowing Red Eye is also common to DQ series
Ive always hated "turn based games" but then I started playing the whole yakuza series until Ive reached Yakuza 7, Im really enjoying it so far. As I can see, the only real way to enjoy Yakuza 7 if youre not a "turn-based game" fan is to play all the other games before it. Ive always hated turn based games and this was the first time Ive actually felt satisfaction in playing this kind of game. Its now my second best game in the series with yakuza 0 still being the best of them all.

True, the only thing that kept me going is the storyline, combat system feels boring and way too easy, I kept waiting for something exciting and it never came :(

The loading screens for me lasted at most like 5 seconds and usually they were so short I couldn't even read the tips, but that's because I have a fast NVME M2 SSD, so they didn't make things worse at all for me.

Play a JRPG Besides Persona 5 Challenge

It’s called Like A Dragon for a reason. It plays like a Dragon Quest game. The only thing I see like Persona is the command menu which is divided up into the button presses. The English is finally in it.
I like it. I will prefer it. I’ve waited for this for years. I don’t like subtitles especially being a college student that has to read so much. You really, REALLY like Persona don’t you?
The 2007 Yakuza movie has the exact same name as this game.
@@Ticketman99 that’s cool info. It totally plays like a Dragon Quest game though. There are multiple references too. If you didn’t know Dragon Quest is very big Japan. They have to sell it on Saturday or else so many guys would take off work to go buy it.
Nintendo help to make that deal so people could buy it. Release date ha to be Saturday. Dragon Quest started the console RPG’s it came out 1 year and a few months before the first Final Fantasy so if not for DQ we wouldn’t even have FF.
This game has nothing to do with a dragon quest game. The only thing is that Ichiban says that he dreamt to be a hero, inspired by dragon quest (because he loves that saga).
It plays totally different from a DQ game.
@@beckar85 ha ha! I gotta disagree with you there. I’m not sure if you played DQ or not. DQ games are turn based. Yakuza 7 Like A Dragon is turned based. Have you played DQXI or any DQ for that matter? Ichiban has a warrior job class. Dragon Quest 7 and 9 are praised for having some of the best job class systems ever invented.
Ichiban considers himself a hero. Every DQ game has a hero in it that wields a holy sword of light that destroys the darkness. Dragon Quest precedes Final Fantasy 1 by one year and and some months.
Dragon quest was the first RPG to Consoles ever being the first one on the NES. If not for DQ we wouldn’t have any RPG to consoles wether turn based or real time or a hybrid type. So much of Yakuza 7 plus like a Dragon Quest game.
You’d really have to get into the history of RPG’s and Dragon quest to see what I’m saying. Not everyone is going to get it sadly. If DQ games got the the same publicity as FF games and Persona and Megami Tensei games more people would know about it.
But it doesn’t in the west as much as those. It’s sad because DQ games are the king of RPG’s. Everything from the themes and sounds in the game when your level up and have people added to your party it’s all based on Dragon Quest.
DQ is so big that Nintendo had to sell that game on the weekends in Japan or else grown men wouldn’t go to work and kids would skip school to buy it. No other game has that effect. As you can see there are many reasons why Like A Dragon is in the title. That’s only scraping the surface.
I heard more times the word "persona" than "yakuza" in a Yakuza game review
I just bought this for a tenner on pss. I akready own Persona 5, and this review convinced me to buy it again. So thanks.
I starter my Yakuza expérience with zero and it was a great introduction to the serie. I then tried Judgment and it was in my opinion an absolute blast ! The combat system was so cool! After finishing it I bought some remastered Yakuza games and it was a let down. It’ si not as slick as Judgment. I was hoping for Judgment/Yakuza mix with English dub and was looking forward to this game . But the combat system seems very dull compared to the Judgment one which was incredible . This is why I won’t buy this game until it becomes budget .

@@azku i don’t think you should play the remastered yakuza 3,4,5. Even remastered they are not very good compared to the others . The 5 is quite all right but the 3 € 4 aged badly. The story are always very good in my opinion but that’s about it. The map is very bad and the general aspect of the games are far less impressive than the others of the series . I wouldn’t t play like a dragon . I was so disappointed . All the combats ( which are the core of the série ) are turn by turn rpg combat . What a let down.
If you liked the Yakuza games you should play Judgment and Last Judgment from the same studio . Incredible story telling and other characters . The last game of the yakuza ( I can t remember the game ) collection I haven’ t played it . Because it’s sets in a time period I don’t care much .
A little thing I have to mentioned . I m a retro gamer and playing classic arcades of the 80-90’s is such a blast . Playing Out Run just like I was a teenager or Super hang on or House of the dead is such a treat . Finding them and playing them in the arcade set in Kamarusho Hope this will help you in your gaming experience.

Btw, it can be argued that Yakuza is already a consequent evolution of what made Shenmue interesting. It's one of the reasons why Shenmue 3 was that bad. The Shenmue franchise can't develop into a modern franchise without being a Yakuza reflection.
The Japenese title is Shin Ryū ga Gotoku (新龍が如く, lit. "Like a New Dragon" or "New Like a Dragon")

I'm curious what platform this review is from...that makes a huge difference in a review as some platforms may not have the graphical issues stated in the review...like Ghostrunner was always shown on PC, but the PS4 graphical/frame drop issues are something that should be pointed out in reviews so we can decide which system to purchase a game on

Exactly my thoughts! This is the best yakuza game! I mean all yakuza games are amazing but this is a true masterpiece! I grew bored of using only kiriu in battles and now we have a spectacular cast plus a joon gi han!!!! I am so eager to see some more content added to the game! And of course i hope for the next yakuza game to be innthe same style as this one! Same cast plus some new playble characters! Congratulations Sega for curing my depression that cyberpunk caused to me!!

Well ill be honest, one of the worst reviews for a Yakuza game in general. Ive never had a problem with any of the "Repetitive" Yakuza games. Every game is a ton of fun, id highly recommend giving every single one a try if you have the chance.
You're talking about loading but the pc and series x versions load much faster
The job system being shallow is what took this from a day-1 buy to a wait-for-sale for me. I was excited to hear about them trying a spin on turn-based combat, but that's a gameplay model with a long history and a lot of excellent executions over the decade to steal from. Unfortunately, almost all the footage I've seen and comments I've read suggest it's very simplistic with a lot of the jobs just being an almost copy-paste lineup of the same basic moves.
On the bright side, it has been said that it will include the "Premium Masters Pack" that was sold separately in Japan, including New Game+ and Ex-Hard difficulty.

Holy bud this isn't a review 3/4 of this review is comparing this to persona but in a way I might buy this now because I put 200+ hours in persona lol but calm down saying persona
I was interested in this game a year ago and now it's on sale. Can't bring myself to buy it though. The combat looks kind of dull to me given it's turn based now. Plus I never finished Yakuza 6, game just seemed to go on forever and we're back in Kamurocho again
Pick it up you wont regret it also most of the game takes place in a new town not in Kamurocho

Definitely don’t compare Yakuza 7 to Persona 5. The Persona series combat is fast, fluid and fun. Whereas Yakuza 7 is clunky, slow and boring.

Yakuza 2 was the best game in the series loved it and I actually played it again on hard
And I enjoyed it more the 2nd time

I will not pick this entry up. The fighting is a huge turnoff. Even tho I’m a huge Persona fan HOWEVER I love Yakuza combat. I’ll definitely watch the cutscenes.

I don't know why they decided to make it a full on tactical based RPG. Don't get me wrong, I love RPG's of all types but for Yakuza?! I have been a fan of this series since it first debuted on the PS3 and I got a chance to play the earlier titles when they remastered them. I love the series but I may just pass this one by.
