None of the other reviewers touched the most obvious question "should you play the previous installments?" You handled that right away so you get a thumbs up from me!
I was thinking of getting this game but was waiting for a discount. I was pleasantly surprised it had a major discount in the PS store and it barely came out. My first thought was it must of suck for it to have a price cut like that already. Glad you made this video. Im thinking of getting it. Love the Yakuza games.
One of my favorite parts about this game is it continues the trend of me not being able to decide my favorite of the series, because nearly every new entry has something to it that I adore and can only get from that entry, I could never just say “yea this one’s my favorite”. If I had a top 10 favorite games list, half of it would likely be Yakuza games lol. If I had any one minor complaint about this game, it’d be that the directional attacks, ability to move, and combos with party, if used efficiently, make the game incredibly easy. That coupled with the fact that regular attacks restore MP makes combat so much more consistent, yet at the same time I don’t know if I ever felt worried I’d lose a fight even once, not like in 7 where I definitely had some scrapes with death. I suppose in a way, this is also a pro as well as a con, because it really does flow so well for me. I liked 7, but I’m still more of a beat ‘em up guy in regard to this series, but this game’s flow REALLY hit hard for me and I found myself doing far more job switching this time so I could gather different abilities and make everyone exactly how I wanted them.
I have watched Luke Stephens review of this game and after watching this video. I bow to your approach to reviews. You are the best game reviewer i am watching by far. Wish you all the best.
i played yakuza: like a dragon about 20~ hours but couldn't continue felt bored the loop of how story is done and combat got boring for me as well(loved persona 5) but just not this for some reason, my question is looking at this i see it the exact same as the previous game, is there enough of a difference and improvement for me to like it more
If you liked the Yokohama/Hawaii dungeon and you liked the gameplay within it, would you say the DLC is still worth buying for the dungeon and party interactions alone?
This was one of my favorite games i've ever played. i didn't purchase any DLC from day 1 and i'm glad i didn't. i completed all the side quests before completing the main game, which made it incredibly long. I was about 115 hours in before completing the main story. i did the same thing - beat dondonko island before progressing in game. that was the best possible option because then you can go on a spending spree. i dedicated a full week IRL to dondoko island, and i'm glad i did. what an addicting side game! anyways, i'd happily rate this game a 9.5/10. almost perfect aside from a few flaws like the dungeons and first 5 hours as well. once you're in hawaii, the game just explodes in terms of fun. one of the best ever made!
Thank you for being so thorough in your reviews! So what kind of side projects are you working on? What other irons do you have in the fire, in case the algorithm randomly decides to nuke your channel like it does sometimes?
I’m sad that every content about this game has those comments about NG+. I have finished Like a Dragon, and I haven’t even considered playing NG+. If you hate that, blame it on Sega then. I bet those people complaining didn’t even play this series. I can’t afford this game yet, but after playing 7 and now Judgment, I really believe that these games are created by a passionate team.
0:27 this is the first video Im watching of yours, and this alone made subscribe, a review is very different from a 100% review, thx for taking the time to
There were rumors that the NG+ mode had a secret or added ending to the base game story ending? Can you confirm this? Because if not, then the DLC route SEGA took makes even less sense than it already did. Besides that, I fullheartedly agree with your video. Very well put together!
Yes,he's more into crpg or any tbs/pure rpg game The only reason he reviewed this=maybe because it's tbs He's not really into the original yakuza 'genre'
you need to buy the DLC that gives you the big swell dungeon if you wanna just platinum the main game. it will take forever to grind the hawaiian/yokohama dungeon once Kasuga reach around level 60, he needs to be a level 70 for a trophy required to get the platinum. they just don't give enough EXP unless you bought the DLC/premium adventure and big swell dungeon.
I'm not going to watch this video yet because I am only halfway through the series and am being sensitive to spoilers but holy shit. Did you actually 100% this game that fast? You're doing the Lord's work out here.
I love to 100% my games and I'm always scary about the minigames, as I tend to get frustrated quickly for that kind of stuff. Did you have much difficulty to 100% the minigames?
how does story compares to 7 , becouse I replayed the game again, and I just love it, ichiban is my favourite character, I played all main games before .
A question for completionist sake, does completing the game in NG+ legendary difficulty also nets you the achievement for completing NG+ hard difficulty?
Is there no equivalent to the True Final Millennium Tower dungeon that required you to have all level 99 party members in Infinite Wealth? I was really hoping for some hard post game content
I've played all the main line games to mostly completion back when I was a teenager (that means getting most, if not all, trophies) Would you recommend this game to someone who doesn't have as much time to play anymore due to work? Or is the hour commitment too much?
@MortismalGaming Yeah, so it's as big as Yakuza 0 and like a dragon. I'll probably wait for this game to be on sale. Your review made me more motivated to buy the game.
This game is everything I wanted in a sequel! Sure the paid NG+ is terrible and two optional dungeons were so boring I thought it was going to fall asleep. Other than that this is a GOTY contender for me. Congrats on 100% this beast!
Finished the game today. Mostly afree with your review. Complaints about the combat are 100%, ai'm really impressed with how much it is improved since 7 but is has the exact same Extreme Damage Essence Of spam tactic in late game. Idk if I would agree that the story was overall great. Personally I am not a fan of cult leader villains and Bryce doesnt do much to escape that mold. The beginning is slow but I would say the progress of the hunt for Akane, as well as her weak presence in the story overall (her and one other key character dont even show up in the epilogue at all) really stunt Ichiban's half of the story. Kiryu's however feels like a perfect send off, especially with all the side content
I accidentally sold the weapon you get when you bond with Seong Hui at the Materials exchange at Julie's ... It's called Assassin's something. Can I get it back ?
i played all yakuza titles which is available on pc with all sides quest done. my least favorites were the ones with turn based combat because i absolute suck at it and i am not a patient person, but the yakuza storyline is what i am here fo at the end of the day (= and it's still my favorite video game series. i think they can at least do what new atlus (company of persona games) game promised, tedious street encounters with low level enemies can be old school beat em up brawler, and the story important high level enemy and boss fight can still be turn based. or perhaps they can find a happy medium like final fantasy 7 remake did.
So happy that you liked the game. If you ever want to get to older entries you should have fun completing them as well, assuming you are willing to master some minigames. Well, A LOT of minigames.
I live paycheck to paycheck and would still prefer to pay $90 or $100 for a fully complete game. This "DLC" is not DLC. A good example of actual DLC would be like the expansions added in Skyrim. They just took a few things out of the game and told us it was extra content. It's not even about the money for me, it's the principle of it. Pretty soon we're gonna be paying $10 per chapter, plus $5 per additional jobs other than the defaults. Can't believe they did this to an otherwise phenomenonal game. Very sad
The $70 version is absolutely the full game. The DLC is a tacked on cash grab, NOT cut content. The preorder jobs are far more egregious but I preordered the game and havent even used them
As much as I agree, I'm kind of sick of hearing about this. Most people are gonna get this 100 hour game and either go half way or complete it and never look back. New game plus is reserved mostly for veteran gamers, the silent majority are casuals. Hell it's already sold 1 mil, people are clearly still buying the game regardless of the online uproar. This new game plus outrage just comes across as the outrage of the week, similar to how Hogwarts Legacy was boycotted only for it to become one of the best selling games of the year.
It's a shame about the difficulty, but I seem to encounter that issue with a lot of RPGs - complex and satisfying combat, but little reason to utilize it. I will say, I started the Hawaii dungeon as soon as I got it at level 20, and the combat system shined so much fighting purple and purple boss enemies. I actually had to use consumables, had people die, and really utilized the positioning. Luckily this is an easy fix, and hopefully PC mods come out that up the difficulty before I start Legend mode. Small side note: The permanent stat bonuses from other jobs is bugged for a lot of us and not transferring over apparently. I guess that's is a positive since the combat gets too easy.
Game was great, though perhaps not quite the jump in quality in the 4 years it took to make. Would've wanted a smidge more post game and then the DLC situation is atrocious. That said, my #1 gripe: PLEASE KEEP CHARACTERS STILL WHEN IT ISNT THEIR TURN IN COMBAT. The absolute most annoying thing in this game (and it was also a problem in the last game) was waiting around for ideal positioning on an AOE attack or heal because one of the targets keeps wanting to shuffle in and out of the radius. It also adds an element of planning for future turns by allowing you to pre-position characters who aren't making melee attacks in proper range for an ally's buff or heal.
hey man I was curious if you had considered checking out the daggerfall unity 1.0 release? even tho you cant 100% it at least I don't think lol, I thought id ask cuz your thoughts on it would be a great listen. good stuff!
Do you really need to do stuff and build on the island to experience the story of the game? Honestly, that is what is making me hesitant to buy the game, as I don't like building and just want to play the story.
That is sad, Legend mode and the True Millennium Tower was some of the most fun I had with the first game, it looks like this game's version of it is bad. The Dragon Engine (Kiwami 2, LAD6 and 7) plays well enough, but seems terribly optimized for Steam Deck. Even Kiwami 2 had my Steam Deck's fan on full blast for a good chunk of the game. Maybe the entire time and I just got used to the sound.
I just finished t he last chapter, exactly 100 hours and i still have another 20 or so hours of postgame at the very least. Not even going to touch NG+. In any case, fantastic game.

@@vladik87 me too both like a dragon were definitely more jrpg (anime) with things like the journey and power of friendship being main themes
Been a fan of Yzkuza since they started releasing them on PC (I can't remember which one was first), but I played all of them and aside from 3 and 4 I enjoyed my time with all of them. I have been having a lot of fun with this one, but I can't indulge in the side content too much because of other games coming out this month so I hope 10 days will be enough to finish the main story before Banishers comes out.
Thanks for the review Mort!
What was it about 3 and 4 that you didn’t like? I’m planning on kind of working backwards so expect to hit these at some point.
@@jekw23 the gameplay is outdated.
@@jekw23bro don't listen to this guy. One of the worst things I hate about yakuza fans is blindly hating on certain games and affecting the opinions of newcomers. Yakuza 3 is my favorite of the games and there are people who will tell you to straight up skip it 💀
All the games are great, have fun with them.
@@REDEEMERWOLF plan to. They are just so freaking gorgeous I still love just wandering around.
I am seeing same gameplay as judgement / lost judgement except for the fighting styles, great fun experience as always playing one of these games. Thanks for the great content as always, just subbed👍👍🎅
The man. The legend. The 100% machine!
None of the other reviewers touched the most obvious question "should you play the previous installments?" You handled that right away so you get a thumbs up from me!
Trust me though, playing the previous games amplifies the satisfaction of this game 100x more.
I was thinking of getting this game but was waiting for a discount. I was pleasantly surprised it had a major discount in the PS store and it barely came out. My first thought was it must of suck for it to have a price cut like that already. Glad you made this video. Im thinking of getting it. Love the Yakuza games.
I've never played the Yakuza series but always wanted to and I wonder if I get the like a dragon starter pack for PS5?
I played on steam deck and just locked the FPS at 30 because a turn based RPG does not need any more than that.
No
no
This was one of my favorite games i've ever played. i didn't purchase any DLC from day 1 and i'm glad i didn't. i completed all the side quests before completing the main game, which made it incredibly long.
Just finished the game and finally able to watch this vid! Left a like as well to help the algorithm. Great review as always!
As for the steam deck, I'm not exactly sure what you mean when it comes to steam cloud? For me it transfers all of my saves
Just started playing the series with 0 myself. Will be fun to get into this one later this year. 100% getting this game when it’s on sale later
If you are on Xbox or pc, nearly the entire franchise is on gamepass
Literally HOW
0:27 this is the first video Im watching of yours, and this alone made subscribe, a review is very different from a 100% review, thx for taking the time to
Just beat the base game, really loved it. One of the best!
There were rumors that the NG+ mode had a secret or added ending to the base game story ending? Can you confirm this? Because if not, then the DLC route SEGA took makes even less sense than it already did.
Besides that, I fullheartedly agree with your video. Very well put together!
Sorry if I missed something but I don't think you mentioned playing the previous games in this video, so is this your first yakuza?
Yes,he's more into crpg or any tbs/pure rpg game
The only reason he reviewed this=maybe because it's tbs
He's not really into the original yakuza 'genre'
you need to buy the DLC that gives you the big swell dungeon if you wanna just platinum the main game. it will take forever to grind the hawaiian/yokohama dungeon once Kasuga reach around level 60, he needs to be a level 70 for a trophy required to get the platinum. they just don't give enough EXP unless you bought the DLC/premium adventure and big swell dungeon.
I'm not going to watch this video yet because I am only halfway through the series and am being sensitive to spoilers but holy shit. Did you actually 100% this game that fast? You're doing the Lord's work out here.
Had it about a week early but yeah
Did... Did you finish mahjong??
So happy you covered this. Another winner Mortim!
Does anyone know if the Dondoko Island progression transfers over to NG+?
Do you need to beat the game twice on new game + for the 100%
No
You don't have to beat it, but you do have to play it
As a customer, I’m disappointed for the DLC
As a trophy huntress, I’m happy that the platinum/100% isn’t as horrible as Kiwami 1, or 0.
yoooo lets go! I've been loving this game, excited to see what you say about it.
18:01 wait, is that Saya Hiyama AKA the weather girl????
Yes
What was your playtime for this game without the new game plus?
I love to 100% my games and I'm always scary about the minigames, as I tend to get frustrated quickly for that kind of stuff. Did you have much difficulty to 100% the minigames?
Not really, more of a time investment than anything else
how does story compares to 7 , becouse I replayed the game again, and I just love it, ichiban is my favourite character, I played all main games before .
In my humble opinion, the story of 7 its better, but i think that the next game its going to be great with the ending of infinite wealth
A question for completionist sake, does completing the game in NG+ legendary difficulty also nets you the achievement for completing NG+ hard difficulty?
Yeah
Hey man, what type of microphone do you use? Reason I ask is because it sounds really good :)
Shure SM7B
Is there no equivalent to the True Final Millennium Tower dungeon that required you to have all level 99 party members in Infinite Wealth? I was really hoping for some hard post game content
I've played all the main line games to mostly completion back when I was a teenager (that means getting most, if not all, trophies)
Would you recommend this game to someone who doesn't have as much time to play anymore due to work?
Or is the hour commitment too much?
It took more than 100 hours
Funny how the longest story in the series lacks the time to give some important characters and villains screen time
Im on pc using controller..im new to the series one question..how do u switch attacks to different enemies?
Use the D pad. Left and right arrows to choose a target.
You need infinite wealth to afford some of these "ultimate editions".
£95 for a video game is disgusting.
I accidentally sold the weapon you get when you bond with Seong Hui at the Materials exchange at Julie's ...
It's called Assassin's something. Can I get it back ?
Benten Pawn in Ijincho, or Treasure Select Pawn on River St. in Hawaii. Those locations will sell them if you need replacements.
Love the video. If I had to review games after 100%ing them I would be reviewing very very few games.
i played all yakuza titles which is available on pc with all sides quest done. my least favorites were the ones with turn based combat because i absolute suck at it and i am not a patient person, but the yakuza storyline is what i am here fo at the end of the day (= and it's still my favorite video game series.
i think they can at least do what new atlus (company of persona games) game promised, tedious street encounters with low level enemies can be old school beat em up brawler, and the story important high level enemy and boss fight can still be turn based. or perhaps they can find a happy medium like final fantasy 7 remake did.
So happy that you liked the game. If you ever want to get to older entries you should have fun completing them as well, assuming you are willing to master some minigames. Well, A LOT of minigames.
Did you play the 7th game? If yes how did this game improve?
The preorder jobs are far more egregious but I preordered the game and havent even used them
Do I have to pay for new game plus to watch this?
Yes
Didn't know you played Jrpgs. Will you be reviewing Persona 3 reload as well?
No plans, high school stuff tends to be an instant ignore for me
@@MortismalGaming understandable. The gameplay looks interesting though but it's overpriced
So how sick did the experience make you? 😅
"Menacing Men" is gold
Goddamn that was fast. I’ve tried playing Majong in all the Yakuza games but I just suck at it
Respect that you tried it so much. I’ve avoided it so far but I do want to try all the mini games at some point
It would be worth it if thay did not do such a slimy thing as locking ng+ behind a 15$ pay wall
I don't have time for NG+. Persona 3 Rebirth and eiyuden chronicles all come out in the first 4 months of the year.
People are upset and rightfully so because this can be the beginning of monetizing basic functions that have been free since the beginning.
Only reviews i trust.
First Yakuza game, Mort? Seems like a great game. I'll follow your advice and leave the DLC for what it is. :)
For Mort to say the "DLC sucks" with his temperate personality--it must be pretty bad. Definitely staying away.
Does your personality lvl carry over?
Do you need to have played the previous games?
yes
hey man I was curious if you had considered checking out the daggerfall unity 1.0 release? even tho you cant 100% it at least I don't think lol, I thought id ask cuz your thoughts on it would be a great listen. good stuff!
Ill probably get to it at some point
Permanent stats for jobs doesnt stack idk if its a bug
Do you really need to do stuff and build on the island to experience the story of the game? Honestly, that is what is making me hesitant to buy the game, as I don't like building and just want to play the story.
No, there's a short introduction to it, but you dont have to do any of it beyond that
@@MortismalGaming Perfect, thank you! I read that it's a great way to make money, but it just doesn't interest me.
If ya want a challenge I recommend LAD0, very great game considered to be grindy due to lots of RNG but it's doable.
I just finished t he last chapter, exactly 100 hours and i still have another 20 or so hours of postgame at the very least.
Not even going to touch NG+.
In any case, fantastic game.
& ONE more question..why wen i buy clothes like hoody or hats hes still wearing his suit why cant i see what i purchase? I have it equipped but i cant visually see it
is Mew Shoe back?
As always your reviews don't disappoint. Thanks for making this!
A real shame with the NG+ stuff, it led me to not buy the game at at launch. i loves the previous game but will buy it later at a cheaper price.
